  1. I'm calling it now, it's from Drehy's point of view.
  2. Vote for Lopen! Lopen for President! Looks to me like maybe Kaladin figured out how to infuse others with stormlight. And what were all the questions the bridgemen had about it in tWoK? It looks like they get an answer.
  3. I love today's glimpse of Pattern. What is the sphere, why is he interpreting it, why would it say, I am a stick? Is it relevant to lightweaving?
  4. Renarin says in Chapter 61: So we know she didn't die during his childbirth. Also we have Dalinar saying in Chapter 22 that his wife has been "dead these ten years."
  5. Hmm, born in blood and death. Reminds me of Renarin's blood weakness, and that his mother is dead. She didn't die during childbirth, did she? Edit: Apparently not, Renarin mentions remembering a story she told him when he was a child. But then, there is the seemingly corresponding bit on the cover flap that names Dalinar.
  6. I just had this weird image of someone shooting stormlight out of their bellybutton. Navel surgebinding! Lol
  7. The latest glimpse reminds me of something Taravangian could say. He's definitely acting to get rid of the leaders of the world he feels would be detrimental to his plans of saving it. I can see how it could just as well be Kaladin. Edit: beaten to the punch :-)
  8. I never paid too much attention to acknowledgments in books before, so your name didn't stick in my mind until I found this site. Once I had an idea of who you are, I quickly made the connection to Peet since the "quietly dependable" line and Peet's name stuck with me since reading The Way of Kings.
  9. As far as I remember Peet was still alive by the end of Way of Kings. I don't know if he'll show up in Words of Radiance.
  10. This is regarding the bridgeman "Peet" in the Way of Kings. http://coppermind.net/wiki/Peet Given that the name is similar to Peter, he is balding, and is described as "quietly dependable," is this character essentially like a cameo for Peter Ahlstrom? Or is it just coincidence? I think it is an intentional cameo for the above reasons, and Brandon has written in cameos for Peter in other books also (though not necessarily a character) I imagine it could be pretty common for authors to write in characters loosely based on people they know, or to name places after them. I think it is kind of cool.
  11. Oh yeah, one case of an "all caps voice" was in the Child of Tanavast chapter, where Kaladin rides the storm, then hears the voice (all caps) and sees the "stormface" again.
  12. Hmm, who else talks in all caps? Haha, reminds me of the Dark One in Wheel of Time.
  13. Good find Moogle, pairing breathing in with Soulcasting. I wonder why the gems appeared to glow brighter though. I thought breathing in stormlight took it away from the gems. Why would they glow brighter if she was breathing in their stormlight? That raises another question. Why is the type of gem still important for her soulcasting if she only needs to breathe in stormlight to fuel the transformation? When Shallan was poisoned with the backbreaker powder, Jasnah says, "I need a garnet" so she could soulcast Shallan's blood to save her. I wonder what other evidence or explanations we will get in WoR. A couple more weeks!
  14. Hello, I've been lurking on the site since doing the shardhunt, and decided to finally make an introductory post. I was intrigued by "the cosmere" that I became aware of after the shardhunt and have been voraciously devouring anything and everything I can find regarding it. I believe I first became aware of Brandon Sanderson's writing when he was selected to finish the Wheel of Time series. I decided to read the other books he had written at the time. I loved Mistborn, and the other two books in that trilogy after they came out. Elantris and Warbreaker were great as well. The Alcatraz books were a change of pace and quite fun to read. I thought he did well with the last Wheel of Time books (man, what an amazing responsibility to take on). I especially enjoyed The Way of Kings and look forward to Words of Radiance and the rest of the series. I think I've read almost everything he's had published (including Rithmatist, Steelheart, Legion, and other novellas) aside from Infinity Blade. After I got married three years ago, I introduced my wife to his books, and she's loved them as well. Whenever someone asks for suggestions on what to read next, I suggest Mistborn, or anything by Brandon Sanderson. When my first son was about to join us last year, I took Elantris to the hospital, and my mother-in-law ended up reading it and said she really liked it. I've read many of the books my wife has read and enjoyed by other authors, but I haven't found one whose work I enjoy as much as Brandon's. Anyway, I'll probably stick around browsing this site for quite a while, though I may not be one to post very often. -Peet P.S. Should I pick a different user name? It seems like this character could have been a nod to Peter Ahlstrom in the Way of Kings. I chose it because there is a connection to my name and I think I share the attribute of being quietly dependable.
  15. Like others, my first thought was that it is directed toward Szeth (who has an oathstone, and has done whatever his masters have commanded), but now I'm leaning toward it being written to Hoid.
  16. Back to a followup question I had earlier: Does a surgebinder who can soulcast or perform regrowth need to breathe in the stormlight, or is being in contact with an infused gem enough?
  17. Moogle, thanks for your thoughts. It's funny, I actually deleted a sentence before I posted that said something similar to what you do about surgebinders all having a way to use stormlight. I thought it went without saying. So you think all surgebinders can inhale stormlight. Do you think that is the only normal way they can use stormlight to perform whatever surgebinding ability they have? Does a surgebinder who can soulcast or perform regrowth need to breathe in the stormlight, or is being in contact with an infused gem enough? I had the thought that Darkness didn't seem concerned with securing any sources of stormlight when he went for Ym, but decided it wasn't a valid point, since there's a big difference between palace and shoemaker's shop, and I don't think we had the whole chapter. And with Lift he could only start keeping stormlight from her after he and his minions had her captured. It seems like Darkness has a way to locate surgebinders, but doesn't seem to know what their specific KR order would be without witnessing it. Perhaps he just has to be cautious about stormlight sources in general before he knows exactly what that surgebinder's abilities are. I'd find some quotes but it's too onerous on a phone.
  18. Can all surgebinders breathe in stormlight? I think the most advanced surgebinders we've seen so far are Szeth, Kaladin, and Lift. We know Szeth is well practiced at breathing in stormlight, and Kaladin did it unintentionally before learning how to intentionally. Lift is special in her ability to metabolize food/nutrients into stormlight, so she doesn't need to breathe it in, but that doesn't mean that she can't learn. What about Jasnah, Shallan, and Ym? When soulcasting, I don't remember Jasnah or Shallan having breathed in, but they were essentially in physical contact with infused gems. However, in WoR chapter 6, it is mentioned that Shallan breathes in before turning the deck green, then she is puzzled by her dun spheres. So either she breathed in their stormlight, or it was used by being in contact with her. Ym seems to have had grabbed a sphere knowing he would need its stormlight to heal the urchin's foot under the guise of medicine (reminds me of Nynaeve channeling in WoT). I'm led to conclude that there appear to be two "normal" ways surgebinders can use stormlight (plus Lift's special way): through physical contact with an infused gem; and Breathing in the stormlight. So it's possible that the surgebinders we haven't explicitly seen breathe in stormlight just haven't learned how yet. Or some surgebinders just don't have that ability, which might make sense with Jasnah's statement that not all Knights Radiant were warriors (and wouldn't need the physical enhancements that breathing in stormlight grants). I've been lurking for a while since doing the shardhunt, and wanted to write the thoughts I had about this particular topic. What do you think?
