  1. Not sure giving ALL our breaths to Aodan is the best way to go. Sure he's probably the most protected person at the moment but I don't like the idea of putting all our breaths in one basket for the PK to possibly steel. Plus, we have a lot more chance of rooting out the PK with multiple strawmen out searching. Yes, if you have spare breath that you can't do anything with, giving it to Aodan is a good option. If we get him to the 5th heightening that is one more level of protection on him. I wouldn't do that at the expense of the information an extra strawman provides us though.
  2. Long after the early morning light crested the horizon, Summon was still lying in a stupor, watching the clouds as they passed across his field of vision on their journey to distant lands. He had no idea how he'd ended up passed out in this alley but the pounding headache and dry mouth gave him a strong clue. This is why he usually didn't drink when under stress. His reluctance to move had a little to do with the realization that the moment he raised his body it would feel like a thousand anvils were pressing down on his head. But if he was honest with himself, he new it was really shame that held him in place. A distant scream had awoken him last night but he was too disoriented to decide if the sound was part of a dream or someone really in trouble. As he tried to piece his surroundings together footsteps had sounded on the cobblestone just around the corner followed by a short scuffle and whispered words. Even in his confused state he realized what was happening but couldn't act. He might not have been able to save the man being attacked but he could at least have seen who the attacker was. Instead, he laid where he was, motionless, too terrified to help someone in need. A man was dead less than a block away and Summon had done nothing to stop it. He needed to stop wallowing in self pity though. That would do no one any good and would only compound his feeling of cowardice. Summon had vital information that the others needed to know. Not only were the Pahn Kahl killing us, but they were stealing our breaths. Pretty soon the delegation would have to contend with awakened objects and lifeless instead of just nameless assassins. Summon took some deep breaths, braced himself for the pain, then struggled to his feet. After a few shaky steps, the dizziness started to clear and he turned the corner to find exactly what he'd expected. A body, the man named Fron, lay on his back in the middle of the street with a gruesome gash across is throat and a pool of blood trailing from his body into the nearest gutter. A small crowd had already gathered to gawk at the body but Summon had already seen more than enough dead bodies for his own liking in the last few days. "Sorry I wasn't braver Fron. I'll do everything I can to avenge you though." Nobody in the crowd noticed the disheveled figure that stumbled out of the nearby alleyway and made his way towards the Red Salmon.
  3. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a SoIaF is low on the fantasy, at least in the first book. For people who aren't fans of High Fantasy, the first book is more of an alternative historical fiction and most of the fantasy elements are light and can be ignored. People get drawn into the characters and story before the more fantastical events start happening and by then the readers are too hooked to be put off by the fact that they are now reading books about magic and dragons. Malazan on the other hand is about as in your face as high fantasy gets. I remember reading the opening chapter and thinking what in the light is going on?!?. It was epic and really cool but I was completely lost for quite a while. It's got a huge learning curve and the plot is extremely intricate with some books almost completely focussing on characters you are just introduced to and ignoring the previous main characters until latter books. They definitely are not recommended for the recently converted fantasy fans which many of the SoIaF readers are. Stormlight is much more obvious high fantasy so I could see why more stormlight fans would recommend them than aSoIaF fans would

  5. I think that was a joke
  6. Very nice. It has more of a sci-if mech armor look to it than it does medieval armor. I like the helmet design and the stormlight cape.
  7. Please no one upvote this or my previous comment. I'm not farming for recognition just making a comment on the strangeness of the rep system sometimes. It always confuses me when I see a situation like this where Porridge's comment gets up voted but the two original posts he's referencing don't
  8. We have two books of stuff he did do that were well worthy of execution. To leave someone with as much power and drive as Sadeas does free to continue his scheming just because you think he's been hamstrung is tantamount to suicide.
  9. I've really enjoyed them. The third book is at the top of my must read this year.I'll agree with quiver that the magic is a little confusing at first but it actually makes rereads more interesting as certain aspects of it click into place. I also didn't like Kip in the first book but he has grown on me in the second. Gavin, Ironfist, Karris, General Donavan, The White, and Teia are all enjoyable to read though and I really loved the mechanics of the card game he introduced into the second book and how it related to the events of the world.
  10. but still with all our awakener powers and lifeless so we can kill each other if we aren't happy with the way negotiations are going
  11. If you haven't checked out the site rules yet, it should answer most of those questions.http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6-welcome-to-17th-shard/?p=12693
  12. The way I imagine it, Jezrian was known as the stormfather prior to the breaking of the oathpact. After Jezrian disappeared and a giant face started showing up in the highstorms, they naturally transferred the name.
  13. First off, welcome to the forum! Where are you getting that Jezrian hates the Radiants? If it's because the storm father has a dislike for the Radiants and their broken oaths, see the next point below. All indications are that the storm father is not Jezrian but in fact the largest portion of Honor's power that formed sentience of its own after Honor was splintered by Odium. The relationship between Jezrian and the storm father is something that likely developed over millennia of mythology since Jezrian was the head of the windrunners and thus The Lord of Storms Spren are essentially just pieces of adonalsium's power that have gained a purpose, and in some instances actual sentience. So, the storm father is a spren, just a very powerful one. The excerpts about the Bondsmiths indicate the spren they bond are unique and that there are only a small number of Bondsmiths. They either all bonded the storm father or they each bonded very powerful spren like the storm father and Cusiceth
  14. Just partially lash them so they are weightless, lash them to your belt buckle, and voila you have a trailing set of bridgemen balloons.
  15. Until the next book inevitably proves me wrong, I'm of the opinion that squires only receive the direct effects of stormlight, i.e. increased strength, reflexes, and healthing, not the surge abilities. The squires are in a way bonding the knight and gaining access to stormlight but you have to have a direct nahel bond to a spren to receive the surges.
  16. It was definitely an unexpected scene and a bit shocking but if you really put yourself in Adolin's shoes, it's what the majority of people would do. It has nothing to do with revenge. If he wanted his family to live, it was his only option. Be completely honest, if you were standing in a room with a man who on several occasions has tried to kill you and your father, one of those instances resulting in the deaths of thousands of men who were loyal to you; If you knew there was no one of higher authority who would hold him accountable or stop him from trying to kill again, if he said straight up to your face that he believed he had the right to rule, killing your family was his best chance of achieving that, and he had every intention to keep on trying to kill you and your family; would you really just sit back and say "oh well, nothing I can really do about it."? If so, then you must have an honorspren already because I most definitely would have done exactly what Adolin did.
  17. It's been strongly theorized that is Hoid (Wit). Sigzil's reaction is because he recognized the description of his former master. In other cosmere works Hoid is described as having White hair. He typically dyes it to fit in. If I get a minute I'll add the links to those topics. Though, Kurk or Argent will likely provide the links eventually if I don't get around to it Edit: here are a few topics that discuss it http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6967-hoid-worldhopping-theory-spoilers/?p=114150 http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7169-world-hopping-and-sel/?p=119779 http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7506-the-three-laws-of-hoid/?p=124153 http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7181-spoiler-question-on-the-hoed/?p=118300 And a WoB where he doesn't contradict that was Hoid.
  18. I'll bet you never expected to have to write that sentence in your lifetime.
  19. I haven't read every post in here so sorry if I rehash something that was already said but wanted to give my 2 cents on the original topic. The third ideal jarred me a bit as well at first because it seemed so similar to the second but after I thought about it I realized it is making a very different point. Someone in here mentioned how it's not the actual words but the intent that matters for the ideals and how we might be getting hung up on how Kaladin worded it so here is my interpretation of their intent. Ideal two: I will protect people Ideal three: I will not be a judge and jury. Its not the job of the windrunners to decide who is worthy of protection and who deserves to die. That's the skybreaker's job. The second ideal is meaningless if they can just ignore it when they decide they don't like the person or if they decide it's protecting the greater good to let someone die. The reason Syl was dying was because Kal was making a conscious decision to protect the kingdom as a whole by letting Elhokar die unjustly. That isn't his call to make, he's just supposed to protect people in danger and Elhokar certainly was.
  20. Seems like that's the same scenario as a Hallendren win. Not sure why 3, 1, or 0 Idrians remaining makes a difference.
  21. Can't seem to find it but I'm almost certain I remember Brandon saying something about Hoid being incapable of hurting someone. He was asked about who would win in a fight between Hoid and another powerful being and while Hoid is more powerful and probably wouldn't "lose" the fight, he also couldn't "win" because he wouldn't be able to cause injury to the other person. I'll keep looking for the quote but I'm pretty sure what Rock said about him is accurate.
  22. If you haven't seen this WoB yet, a little extra info on them from the mouth of the creator.
  23. So this work doesn't exactly fit the overall topic for this thread but I'm used to posting all my work in here so am just gonna go with it. I've been improving my photoshop/illustrator tracing techniques since I started copying all the various cosmere artwork for use on the 17s and the coppermind but have never done much with fully shaded and colored vectors. I Decided to start attempting to learn some of those techniques and chose the picture of the whitespine in Shallan's sketchbook, originally drawn by the amazingly talented Ben McSweeney (inkthinker on here). I'm essentially learning how to do this stuff just by trial and error so I am more than open to suggestions from the very talented artists in here who have much more experience in this area than myself. The shading and coloring are also by no means done completely from scratch. I have nowhere near enough talent for that yet. I'm just trying to work out some of the basic principles so I pulled heavily from the original work and just manipulated it a bit. Here is the Line Art I first traced from the sketches: If you'd like an SVG vector file of that to mess with click HERE Here is what it looked like after playing around with the shading and colors: And the vector file for that as well is HERE
  24. I have to admit, it was interesting seeing a show tie into a concurrent box office movie like that.
