  1. Thanks! I think it's like having an intern. I can carry things for you, screen your elsecalls, or elsecall ahead to make arrangements when you travel. If you have to soulcast an attacking voidbringer into blood or gross-paste-that's-not-anything-like-strawberry-jam, I am probably organizing (or doing) the cleanup. I'll help with research and publication, and hopefully I'll get my name on a paper every now and then. What other requests do you have?
  2. I'm in the "not gonna make it as a radiant" club. Changed half a dozen answers and never got over 50%. Best (and first) was a tie for Elsecaller/Truthwatcher at 47%, and Elsecaller showed up near the top later. Put me down as an Elsecaller squire, if Mrs. K and Chouta will have me.

  4. My favorite Neglected Sanderwork is Defending Elysium. If you haven't read it yet, you really should. Not as polished as the more recent stories, but still awesome. Spoilers for that story:
  5. I'm curious how that translates to visual media. If you think about a movie after you watch it, do you remember the images at all, or just the dialogue and sequence of events? If you do recall movie images, what about, say, graphic novels?

  7. I suspect that there was no lack of effort to study Calamity. The question is why they didn't discover more than they did, or alternatively what happened to their conclusions that prevented researchers from disseminating their results I assume that Calamity could actively dupe measurements being made or avoid contact with any probes that approached. It is also possible that the first Epics arose among those who tried to study the phenomenon (think of Prof and Regalia's team), with the result that people who knew details of the research were either indisposed to share the information or dead.
  8. Like Delightful, I am extremely visual in my reading and my writing, but much more kinesthetically. Actions and expressions register very strongly, and I often catch myself making faces or little motions to correspond with what is happening in the book. (Sometimes others catch me instead). One side effect of this is that I have a very definite feel for the spacial relationships, and if the scene calls for someone to turn left when I think they should be turning right because of how I've imagined the layout, it bothers me a lot. I have to decide whether to ignore what the author just said or take a few moments to go back and reconstruct the scene to be consistent (which only works some of the time, and requires repeated reminders). On the other hand, I am very inconsistent in my ability to visualize characters and places. And when I do have a good mental image of a person or a location, there is a good chance that it is a poor match for the description given in the book. For example, it took me until my 2nd read-through of WoR (after multiple reads of WoK) to finally put red hair on Rock. Slightly related--Way back in grade or middle school there was a unit where we listened to an old radio show production of the Maltese Falcon. After the first scene the teacher asked us to decribe the people and location. I'm sure there were contextual and cultural clues, because nearly everyone had a consistent image. Except me. In my mind the woman was wearing not a dull brown coat but a red sequin dress. My teacher, understandably, just gave me a funny "were you even listening?" look and proceeded with the lesson plan. In all I guess that means my mind's eye works fine, but it doesn't always care what the words say it should be looking at.
  9. Sounds like a very useful skill, employable in all sorts of social situations. Friend can't cook? Feruchemy! Coworker doesn't shower? Feruchemy! (Although this would be mostly indistinguishable from filling a tinmind, so really nothing special.)
  10. Wizard of OZ! But I shouldn't even be on this site right now, with work deadlines and stuff, so I'm ceding my turn back to phattemer. Do another one! Yay! (Unless of course I'm wrong, in which case I will just look silly and overconfident while the rest of you carry on.)
  11. According to Chaos, that is coming in the next software update. Apparently it's a functionality that wasn't built in, and hasn't been added until the upcoming version. The former "Suggestion box and site issues" board has been incorporated into the new "17th Shard discussion" board, so if you have any other ideas on improving the forum, those thoughts are always welcome there.
  12. This matches one scene of Phantom Tollbooth, but I don't think that's it.
  13. All this speculation has me confused. I thought that Spook's authorship of the book had been confirmed back when AoL came out. I do like the changes since the preview chapter. The fight/chase scene is great, and I still think Wayne is awesome.
  14. There was a question on this during the Words of Radiance signing, but there is no transcript, so the WoB is paraphrased. This is taken from the Koloss page on the Coppermind. Apparently this was already hinted at in an interview Brandon did for the AoL MAG supplement. Weiry's interpretation of Kandra at that link is helpful too, and might inform this discussion. The original WoB about Kandra post-WoA (which has since been superseded by the AoL-era books and associated quotes) is here.

  16. This is the answer that was most interesting to me. There has been a lot of discussion in the past about bronze sensing different types of magic use, as well as innate investiture along the lines of the life sense granted by heightenings of breath, but this is the first time I've seen it suggested that a skilled Seeker could sense the difference between the innate investiture held by different individuals. Note that this tells you more than just what planet they are from, but specifically if this skaa is your friend or that guy from the next plantation over. This makes me wonder if (for example) someone on Nalthis could track down the specific breath that originally belonged to a particular person. Brandon has hinted in the past that Breaths are not entirely fungible. On the other hand, there is this from earlier in the AMA: Maybe the information flows both ways? Or maybe the body the soul is in is the important factor?
  17. Absolutely. Just spoiler them and indicate what work the spoiler is for. I'm looking forward to your post :-)
  18. Really? I was under the impression that the reverse was true. Where does it talk about the drawing direction of LoV? I'd be interested to see the quote or picture.
  19. That was a pretty adorable first meeting. A few typos did bug me, but I think that's not really our job to fix at this point. really threw me for a loop--that was not at all what I'd been imagining. I do think the humor felt a little forced, but I'm super excited for the book regardless. Edit: just in case it's useful to Peter, here are the typos that bothered me most.
  20. Good work! This is the first rigorous attempt I've seen to unify the 2D-only and 3D-affecting lines. I really like the way you apply this to various different Rithmatic lines, not just Warding and Forbiddance. That last Julia set reference actually is the piece that most convinced me there is some real merit to this approach. A few points to bring up: In the recent AMA on Reddit, we got this: That doesn't change any of the degenerate infinities above, but it does mean that the conclusion that "σP=1 for all circles" is not correct, so there is another factor at play here. I want to say that i particularly like the way you explicitly approach line segments, including their endpoints. The way to apply infinite conics has so far eluded me. However, the weakest connection here for me is how the treatment of a LoF line segment requires all of the strength to be concentrated at the bind points. IIRC the chalklings preferentially attack the ends of LoF, such as the corners of squares, because they are weaker there than on the flat face, which is clearly still strong enough to present a barrier. I think it is also important to note that the line of Revocation is not simply a triangle wave, but also has a straight line superimposed on it along the axis, so something else is happening there besides an infinite series. I do think it would be instructive to ask Brandon whether another summed waveform, e.g. a square wave, has Rithmatic functions. That might tell us if we are on the right track with this thought process.
  21. I disagree, Twi. You have took take into account the younger age of the target audience for the Reckoners. Brandon wrote it as an indictment of our current educational system. Unsatisfied with the career he would be forced into by society, David works hard to hide his own aptitude and intelligence, preferring the satisfaction of a hands-on trade in the Factory to a more affluent desk job among the privileged. Yet, even with his love for study about the wider world and his efforts to avoid the strictures of post-graduate training, David's education is terribly over specialized. Over and over again his understanding of basic, general concepts is demonstrated to be lacking, most poignantly in his recurrent failed metaphors, itself a metaphor for his failure to relate to others. In the end he only knows two things: firearms and vulnerability analysis. With no other skills, all he can do is destroy, and the damage he wreaks (first in Newcago then in Babilar) rivals that caused by the Epics, who personify the supposedly intractible problems of the day.
  22. @slowswift: No need to sweat this one. The solar calendar and the lunar calendar don't have to match up in any particular configuration, so you can make up whatever you want. Earth cultures have a dozen different ways of trying to reconcile the disparity between a lunar year and a solar year, so basically anything you pick can be plausible. The only astronomical rule of thumb, if you are doing traditional seasons, is to split the year up into fairly even summer and winter lengths, with more or less spring/autumn in between.
  23. Just to clarify, is it the captain or the subordinate who follows janitorial direction? (Aside: It strikes me again how odd some sentences are. That's yet another one I doubt has been composed before.) First thought was Don Quixote, but that doesn't actually fit.
  24. Here is a response I got in the (incredibly stil-ongoing) AMA on reddit. (source) Looks like the geography-based analysis was spot on. Props to ecohansen for spotting this! (Also, great discussion so far. Lots of good points from all sides.)
  25. http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/csb5sr0?context=3 EDIT: added Weiry's follow up.This one included since it impacts the AMA as a whole and questions still to be asked. http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/csb5ujq?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/csb5zi1?context=3 http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ytg2h/im_novelist_brandon_sanderson_ama/csb60yf?context=3
