  1. Good point, I forgot about the color distortion. Didn't Brandon also say something along the lines of Hoid being older if both real time and age than he appears?
  2. Basically, there are a few options regarding his presence at the shattering: 1. He was Adonalsium and took part in his own shattering 2. He was not Adonalsium and took part in the shattering 3. He was Adonalsium and tried to prevent the shattering 4. He was not Adonalsium and tried to prevent the shattering 5. He was not Adonalsium and was an innocent bystander who had just stepped down to the corner store for a pack of smokes when Ati and Leras spotted him and asked him to come visit their sick friend, Adonal. Basically, he either is Adonalsium or is not and he either took part in the shattering or tried to prevent it. Either way we will not know anything for certain until Brandon has written the books that take place on Yolen--though the Gibletish remarks have me a bit curious.
  3. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3400-official-compilation-of-faqs/?p=54717 3rd question down. Yes, Hoid was at the shattering.
  4. Isn't the 5th planned book supposed to focus on Dalinar? Would be kind of hard to do if he is dead. It is more likely that he will kill off or cripple Kaladin, Syl, Andolin, Navani, or Jasnah. Of course, he could have decided to focus on a different character for book five and just not have told anyone...
  5. "The boats glided past a strand of branches breaking the surface of the sea. Some gentle waves had grown up, accompanying the wind, and they lapped against the stiff branches--which reached like the fingers of drowning men out of the waters...The sea was deep--it wasn’t like the Purelake, with its bafflingly shallow waters. Those trees would be dozens of feet tall at the very least, with bark that was mostly stone. Gu simply called them i-nah. It apparently meant bad. They could slice up a boat that scraped against them...The water of the Reshi Sea, like that of the Purelake, was remarkably warm. ". --from Rysn reading I believe that the Reshi sea was dry land at the time of an earlier desolation. The branches of stone trees coming from below the sea's surface seems to indicate that the prior statement is correct. The water being warm like the pure lake also makes we wonder if the pure lake drains into the Reshi sea during high storms--like the way the tide goes way out before a tsunami. Now the only question is if they will make scuba-fabrials :-) I want to know what buildings, if any, are down there.
  6. Honorspren look similar to Windspren before they secure a bondmate. It is also conceivable that what everyone refers to as Windspren are actually unbonded Honorspren.
  7. Awesome!+1
  8. Just reread it. It is similar, but it is not the Thrill. It is the result of soaking in stormlight.
  9. When I read Eshonai's interlude, it seemed she was describing the building that was under 4500 years of cream buildup.
  10. WoB indicates that there are 30 magic systems on Roshar: 10 surgebnding, 10 voidbindng, and 10 others. I think the ten hers are the magics inherent in each of the races/nations. I think that the Thrill is the innate magic of the Alethi-light eyes just like Rocks ability to see spree is an image magic of the horn eaters. “As the beast righted itself in the dark room, Dalinar scrambled away, old instincts kicking in, pain evaporating as the battle Thrill surged through him...The old Thrill, the sense of battle, consumed him. It did not enrage him, as it did some men, but everything seemed to become clearer, crisper. His muscles moved easily; he breathed more deeply. He came alive.” My guess is that the shattering of Honor allowed Odium to gain influence over those that lack honor. This influence means that when they experience the Thrill, they become enraged or take pleasure in the killing. When Dalinar experiences the Odious side of the Thrill he become nauseated.
  11. Szeth will wipe the floor with Kaladin and probably the ceiling as well. The guy might not even summon his blade to do it.
  12. Hey, if any of you guys happen to be time travelers and are reading this post, please drop off the rest of the Stormlight archive for me to read. I have become addicted to Sanderson's writing and am in some serious withdrawal...
  13. I thought it was one of the beads from Shadesmar like what Shallan touched to change her Goblet to blood.
  14. Nice Star Trek reference :-). They may be redshirts, but I think Brandon is going to kill or shard cripple someone important from the first book. Probably Andolin, Kaladin, Dalinar, or Navani. Maybe even Syl somehow. The red shirts don't matter except as a means to move the story forward. I am curious to find out who Moash wants to kill. I have a feeling it will pit Moash against Kaladin not because Moash is a traitor, but because Moash has sworn vengeance on someone Kaladin must protect. If anything, I think if a betrayal is to occur, then it will be Dalinar that does it as a result of his honor. I.e. Kaladin wants vengeance on Amaram for what he did to Kaladin's squad, but Dalinar will prevent it. “All is withdrawn for me. I stand against the one who saved my life. I protect the one who killed my promises. I raise my hand. The storm responds.” Excerpt From: Sanderson, Brandon. “The Way of Kings.” Tom Doherty Associates, 2010. iBooks. 15. Shards are incredibly powerful. I do not think that amassing endowments from each shard will somehow result in his having as much power as a shard. We also know from the letter that he is working actively against Odium as best he can and that an "old reptile"--possibly a dragon from Yolen--has connection to a group that calls themselves the 17th shard and that they are hunting Hoid. It is just as likely that Hoid was Adonalsium as it is that he is actively creating a 17th shard.
  16. I like the idea that Hoid can acquire these abilities because his planet's people were the template for all others. It makes a certain amount of sense. I do not remember reading anywhere about Hoid being a Ferichemist. I do recall that Hoid acquired a bead of Lerasium, so it is possible he is a mistborn. Tangents: Considering how different the Terris people are from the human races of Scadrial, I wonder if they were actually transplanted from Yolen. Considering that Hoid wears black (black having the most color for awakening) and has spent time on ? (Warbringer world) he most likely has over 2000 breaths. I believe this because even with time jumps, he does not appear to age.
  17. Forging creates an alternate history for physical objects--even people. I think it likely that any world hopping or teleporting would be done through the creation of a device, possibly a door one would pass through or maybe a scepter or other "magical item" that would travel with the user and enable a return trip.
  18. Elantrians used Aon-Dor to teleport, not Forging. It is true that they are different ways to access the Dor. Your really big slingshot analogy is very close to the mark, but it's more like Elantrians carry the slingshot with them and that they can not slingshot themselves as far when they are further removed from their base of power. The further away they get, then the weaker the slingshot becomes, possibly becoming non-existent once off-world. I do not believe that the Dor is used in is way to move between worlds. Shadesmar connects the worlds and is how Hoid moves around. As a side note: It is possible that all humans on Sel carry a minuscule amount of the Dor in them and Elantrans, carry more and that this allows them to more effectively interact with the Dor. This means that even off world, they would still have some minor powers, such as the illusion worn by Grump in the way of kings interlude. They might even have enough to access Shadesmar.
  19. Preservation gave a slightly larger portion of his power to the humans of Scadrial to make them sentient. This created the minor imbalance that would eventually allow Ruin to overpower him. In order to keep ruin from having his full power as well, Preservation hid his body (atrium) and trapped Ruins' mind at the Well. When Sazed absorbed the power of Preservation and Ruin, he did not absorb ALL of the power available. To do that he would have had to rob humans of that spark of preservation that gave them sentience and absorb the body of ruin--impossible to do at the time since the body was burned. At the moment Harmony does not have the full power of either shard. As a fermuchemist, Sazed understands the importance of balance. It is the balance that allows him to hold the power of both shards without them annihilating each other. If he gets too much Ruin or too much Preservation, then problems of some kind will occur. This means that when the body of Ruin reforms, he can not absorb it without finding an equal amount of preservation as an offset. If the well still exists,--and I believe it does--then he has another 700 years to go unless he were to absorb the Preservation energy as it refills the Well while absorbing a balance from the Pits. Further, and probably most importantly, WoB indicates that the Pits (and probably the Well also) is a site of spiritual leakage where these energies collect. My guess is that when Ati and Leras first created Scadrial, they had to weave in a portion of their power which created a physical link to the Spiritual--possibly also the Cognitive--realm. As long as the planet exists, these two leakage points, or pools of energy, will continue to slowly reform. This being the case, Sazed is kind of stuck with the existence of the Pits and most likely also the Well.
  20. So far, the only people who have PoV visions are Dalinar and Kaladin. In both cases the visions occured during high storms. Dalinar's were of the past while for Kaladin he rode the storm and saw what the storm saw in the present. My theory is that this ability is tied to the atmospheric pressure ability linked to wind runners and the unnamed radient order in the upper middle of the diagram--possibly bondsmiths. Chart can be found here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4323-seattle-signing-report-out-101413/?p=67791 There was also a "patient" in Karbranth that had visions, but they bled him out for a death quote. He also had visions during storms.
  21. Insane unjustified theory time! 1. Szeth does not have a nahel bond, but has surge binding abilities. 2. Szeth's gravity abiltities match those of a Windrunner 3. Szeth is not a Windrunner, so Szeth must be a sky breaker. 4. Assuming heralds do not have a nahel bond, then the possibility exists that Szeth is a herald...Nalan in specific. He even looks like the bald shin-like guy in the picture. But Szeth is a son, son, etc. ...Memory wipe+Implanted memories! Told you it was insane.
  22. Unless those spare blades are in an armory in Urithru, since no one can get to it. May also explain: “The figure was silent for a moment. Then he spoke in a clear, crisp voice. “Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination. Speak again the ancient oaths and return to men the Shards they once bore.” Excerpt From: Sanderson, Brandon. “The Way of Kings.” Tom Doherty Associates, 2010. iBooks.
  23. “Elhokar, the king’s son and heir, sat at the high table, ruling the feast in his father’s absence. He was in conversation with two men, a dark-skinned Azish man who had an odd patch of pale skin on his cheek and a thinner, Alethi-looking man who kept glancing over his shoulder.” ----------------- “I don’t like this. What we’ve done is wrong. That creature carries my lord’s own Blade. We shouldn’t have let him keep it. He—” From Jasnah's prologue reading. Same two characters (Heralds?) from above. (Darkness from Lift's Interlude) ----------------- “Kalak frowned as he stepped up to the base of the spire. Seven magnificent swords stood proudly here, driven point-first into the stone ground. Each was a masterly work of art, flowing in design, inscribed with glyphs and patterns. He recognized each one. If their masters had died, the Blades would have vanished.” ------------------ “Make it angry!” Elhokar bellowed, his Shardblade—Sunraiser—springing from mist into his hand. It was long and thin with a large crossguard, and was etched up the sides with the ten fundamental glyphs. ----------------- Is it just me, or does it seem like Elkohar possesses one of the Honorblades (Dawnshards?) that were abandoned by the nine fallen Heralds? If so, then it is possible that when we see shard blades that have glyphs and patterns we are actually seeing one of the Heralds' abandoned blades. Just a theory. How far off the mark am I?
  24. I am curious to see if regrowth can heal wounds inflicted by a shard blade. I am also curious if anyone knows if the effects of a shard blade when used on a living being is the result of severing the cognitive link to the body. Any WoB regarding these?
  25. I just finished rereading the series again and noticed something I had not before. When Vin held the power from the well of ascension she noticed that most of the world was uninhabitable except at the poles. Does anyone know if Sanderson has commented about this? Will there be a story covering those who lived at the pole opposite the one Where Vin and the crew resided?
