I think Brandon said at some point that there were ways to detect and hide Investiture built into each of his magic systems.

Thanks. I've edited it now so no one else gets confused. I think Brandon would build that into the magic system. I think Allomancy and Surgebinding are quite similar. We can see parallels between both. Plus I just remembered that Aluminum burns all metals and those bird things steal stormlight.

No! Don't! It's funnier this way!

I'm sorry but I don't really want the editors to give me a warning or worse delete my account!

  2. OH MY GOD! I'm so embarrassed! My computer is really old and I didn't really look at the title properly. Just for clarification I meant SPREN not the other word. :(

Joining the people who misread this thread title. Oh, my days...

In any case: perhaps you're right, but if we were to draw the parallel to Allomancy, then you can't be detected if you're not burning metal. In the same way, the proper Rosharan parallel, it seems to me, is that another spren doesn't become apparent unless you're using Stormlight. Which Kaladin was doing, so Pattern might have seen Syl.

While that might be one way spren see other spren, I notice that Syl saw Pattern only when Pattern was doing something blatant (distracting...was it Renlis?). To use a really bad analogy, maybe it's like Assasin's Creed. Most spren are in low-profile mode, or blending. It's only when you take high-profile actions that another spren might spot you.

...Cannot believe I just went there...

I'm sorry but I've not played many games but I can kind of see your point. Like when a seeker tries to seek allomancers but can only do so if they are burning metals. So do you think there could be a Rosharian equivalent "Coppercloud" that could hide stormlight usage? The think that slightly bothers me with this theory is that if stomlight is equivalent to metals then where do Sprens fit in?

  3. The Stormfather doesn't seem to like Dalinar very much. He was forced by Honor to send the visions but he seems like he has given up on humanity and that to me means he wouldn't help in any other way like giving them a time for the everstorm. However, we have no clue what Bondsmiths powers are so maybe its a side effect of that?

I think it was Renarin, giving how he wrote at the end of WoR. He had access to Dalinar, illumination surge to hide his presence. The only time the writing appeared not a while after a highstorm, but are already there when Dalinar is conscious again, is when Navani wasn't with him.

However, Renarin still had glasses when the writings first appeared, which isn't in favor of this theory because it might mean he was not a surgebinder at that point and therefore wasn't writing the glyphs. Though this can be explained with his visions being a passive non-stormlight consuming ability, meaning he could have visions without healing. We saw from both Kaladin and Shallan's PoVs, it's not easy to invest at first when you don't know how it works.

I really like the idea of Renarin hiding himself but I don't think he's reached the level to preform lightweaving. Remember each potential KR starts using one ability before the other.

  4. I was rereading WoR and I noticed something: The only time Syl notices Pattern is at the duel where Kaladin jumps in to help. Shouldn't Spren instinctively feel each other or at least feel people that our bonded to other Spren? Allomancers or should I say Seekers could feel any allomatic activity nearby. I know they aren't the same thing but as Spren are mostly in the Cognitive realm than the physical you would assume there is a footprint or some clue.

  5. I'm not sure if this has come up before or if its just an idiotic question: Was it Renarin who wrote the countdown on the walls in WoR or Dalinar? I know at the end of the book Renarin starts writing on the wall but if so how did no one notice a Kolin Prince running around and mumbling writing in walls seeing as they were always guarded?

    Please forgive my stupidity :)

  6. I think that Nalan has simply accepted the single most important truth that any person, dragon, herald, skaa, spren, returned, or shard is able to discover: He is a Stick!!!

I think its the opposite. He hasn't let the stick into his heart thus he is all dead inside. In a 'sticky' situation (when he left his honor blade) he chose the path of fire rather than that of the stick!

  7. Okay I know this isn't entirely a WoR topic but Since I saw the original comment in this section I'm gonna go with it. In the Chicago signing there was this part that caught my eye (Its originally from the Words of Brandon post):

Brandon talked about something he called "Honor's purposes" or maybe "Honor's Purposes," and how they are the reason 10 is such a holy and dominant number - I assumed it meant Honor has (had) 10 of those Purposes. It was heavily implied in the conversation that Odium, if he has similar Purposes, does not have 10 of them.

We know after the shattering 16 became the holy number as it was the number of shards. Its still a significant number in other worlds like the number of allomatic metals in mistborn. However in SA 10 is the holy number. I was thinking that the reason for this is because out of the 16 only 10 were initially good or at least good in Honor's eyes that's why in his magic 10 is the dominate number.

Brandon also said that Odium doesn't have 10 purposes. In line with my theory he could have only 6 or even one as he's quite selfish.

I'm sorry I probably make no sense and someone else might have thought of this.

    So any thoughts?

  8. Ok I think I missed the squire thing entirely. I've not started my WoR re-read so I'm not sure where we see that bit. Can someone please tell me where we see the squires in the books and what they are? The bit in the book about the windrunners hierarchy just made me think that you gained more power if you said more ideals.

  9. Jeez this is a long conversation. I would have to go with Kaladin. Shallan doesn't seem to tell Adolin stuff like what she said to Kaladin and as most people know girls are less shallow than guys (sorry please don't hit me!) so she'll grow out of the thought of Adolin's pretty face and get with someone (i.e. Kaladin) who understands her entirely and she can be herself with. I can totally see Shallann telling Kaladin: " I'm off to do mysterious stuff as Veil. Watch the kids tonight!" and Kaladin saying: "Just get Lopen to babysit. I'm totally slumming it with you!" :P

  10. How can we be sure that Vasher is taking in stormlight? He could be eating spren for all we know  Or maybe he just uses peoples breath? People on Roshar wouldn't think of anything of the whole "My life to yours, my breath becomes yours" saying.

  11. I was thinking that maybe Kaladin was protecting himself. During most of WoR he was avoiding becoming the knight radiant that Dalinar wanted. If his scars suddenly dissipated people would be suspicious so he instinctively stopped himself from healing the scars until he was ready to come forward and tell people of his powers. So maybe he'll heal them now?

  12. The ones from amazon? Yes, they have changed several times now. I think someone is just messing with us.

Yeah I just discovered if you keep pressing the "surprise me" button then you get more stuff! It's so awesome! I just hope Peter won't stop them. Everyone gets to read the book tomorrow and as I have to wait till the 6th I might as well get all the hits I could get. Jeez I sound like an addict... What have you done to me Brandon Sanderson... You brilliant man????

  13. Have the previews changed? I "discovered" these previews a few days ago when I was checking my order status for the thousandth time. I swear there was some stuff on lightweaving and other random bits that have now disappeared from the previews.

Also I think the UK publishers felt bad for keeping the books from us for an extra 2 days that's why we have the extra material!
