Is reading The Stormlight Archive worth it?
navybrandt replied to Red Ferring's topic in Stormlight Archive
Downvotes should be reserved for something insulting, offensive, mean, spam, and stuff like that - not something you simply disagree with. -
I'll give a few of these a try. Probably start with Naomi Novik. I'll update with my opinion later (in about a month as I'm a slow reader). Thanks.

So all of my favorite fantasy authors are male (Sanderson, Martin, Erikson, Jordan, Brett, Abercrombie, Rothfuss), but I have yet to find a female author that I love. These are people that I will read just about anything they write, but haven't found a female author that I can get into like their male counterparts. Two, that I've read recently are Elizabeth Hayden and Robin Hobb. Their books were fine but hardly left me craving more. I don't really like young adult dystopian novels such as The Hunger Games and Divergent, and Harry Potter was... meh. 1. Can anyone recommend a female author that can reach the heights of the great male fantasy authors listed above? 2. Will fantasy always be dominated by male authors? 3. Is it just me or do others notice the same phenomenon?

Mine was Dragonlance Chronicles. Awful books by today's standards but to a tweenage boy that got me interested.

Don't let anyone tell you you're not smart. There is something you can do better than Einstein - you just have to find it. -

The answer to your questions...

That is a good idea, YoungBard. I'd probably use it for a while but delete it once the novelty wears off. What I care about the most is the books' release dates, and they are usually publicized well in advance. But if it had more info like Brandon Sanderson posts or tweets, etc. I'd use it more. That being said, since you're doing this as a learning/side project, I'd be glad to test it out for you on my phone. It's a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (T-mobile version).

I dream of being the doctor someday. I'll regenerate, look in the mirror, and say "Oh, no! I'm an American!"

I almost became one of those adults that never read. Most of the required reading in High School bored me to tears. While Anne of Green Gables (for example) might be an excellent work, I don't find it interesting. Forcing someone to read something they don't like is not the way to foster a love of reading. We homeschool and my wife makes our kids read for at least a half-hour per day (in addition to school work) any thing they want. That gets them into reading something they like. -
So, I've made it up to Staff Sergeant in about 3 days. My favorite combos are these: Short Range: Hornet/Freeze Medium Range: Viking/Thunder Long (or any) range: Hornet/Railgun My only complaint is sometimes getting dropped off a server or needing to refresh my browser.

Is it possible to become a beta reader for Sanderson?

Man, ditto except that I stay off the forum while I'm reading a new book. -

I picture Rock as a Klingon, Syl is green, Spheres are large as plumbs. Alethi are white Europeans. Shardplate is an Ironman suit. Dalinar is ALWAYS wearing blue. Hoid is Petyr Baelish from Game of Thrones. I probably have several more misconceptions that i don't even realize are wrong. -

That's actually why I said 1 book. That and the fact that I have a job, church-life, family-life, etc... It'd be awesome for 1 book though. -
Just created an account. What are the pro battles all about?

Peter Ahlstrom, if you see this, I'd like to volunteer for 1 book, as long as it's after this Summer. I'm a slow reader but very nit-picky. Though to be fair, dayman has first dibs since he started this topic. -
Is reading The Stormlight Archive worth it?
navybrandt replied to Red Ferring's topic in Stormlight Archive
"yes, of course" Seriously, it is a huge learning curve and hard to get into until after the first part. There are 5 parts (I think) so that's about 20% of the book! I found that I missed a lot until I read it a second time. Getting the audiobooks helps - at least for me. I promise the strange world will start to make sense and be really awesome. If you loved Mistborn, you will love SA even more as Brandon has only gotten better as a writer. Read some other online reviews and then decide. If you do start to read it, don't give up on it, and I promise it will be worth it - and might even start to consume your life. As Orlion said, it is essential reading if you're into the Cosmere. I would recommend reading Warbreaker too, before starting the second book of SA. I highly doubt anyone on this site will recommend skipping SA. -
Been watching Dr. Who since the 80's. Favourite Doctor: Tom Baker(#4) Favourite Monster: Daleks (Exterminate!) Scariest Monster: Cybermen Favourite Companion: Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) Favourite Episode: Blink Favourite Classic Episode: Inferno

I'm not so into Monopoly, Scrabble, etc... I like Caverna, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, Small World, etc... You have to try Memoir 44. I put off buying it for a long time, because well... you're basically playing army men. I finally gave it a chance and it is way more fun than I could have imagined. I play it with my son all the time.

I'm a euro board gamer. I hope it's a cool game like Carcassone, Caverna, 7 Wonders, etc... and not something boring like Monopoly, Scrabble, etc... What am I saying... of course it will be awesome!

shardblade Changed Scene at the end of Words of Radiance
navybrandt replied to Odium's_Shard's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think I'm just restating what has already been said, but these are the points I get from this information. 1. A soul must be broken before it can surgebind (have a place that Investiture can fit). 2. This broken soul concept spills into other Cosmere works (such as snapping in Mistborn). 3. When you use Investiture, it can either brace your broken soul and hold it together, or it can widen the fissures and break your soul more. (I see no reference to actually healing anything - it either prevents it from getting worse or makes it worse). 4. At this point Shardblades aren't mentioned - It's just talking about Investiture. Implying that the type of Investiture you use and/or how it's used is what braces or breaks. 5. This is talking about Kaladin's Shardblade - no longer just Investiture. 6. It's Kaladin's living Shardblade that would have healed Szeth's soul - no longer just bracing or breaking. 7. Honorblades are not living Shardblades. 8. Dead Shardblades sever the soul while living ones heal the soul. 9. This implies that Kaladin's living Shardblade would not have killed Szeth so much as heal his soul - and Szeth died from the fall not from the stabbing. -
Yo mama's so fat she's the real secret hidden in the map of Roshar. Note: I know about the Julia Set.
