Is anyone here not in college?
navybrandt replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
One problem I've seen (at least in the States) is that people stop actively learning after school. You should always be reading a book or taking a class or experiencing something to better yourself. Spend time with people more successful than you and learn from them and put positive thoughts in your head. Find your passion and work on improving it. Stay away from harmful behaviors that destroy any progress you've made toward success. You can't control luck, but you can avoid behavior with bad odds and participate in behaviors with better odds. It is the secret to success. Get your priorities right; don't give up; use your resources wisely; stay focused; develop the right relations; don’t be greedy; and don’t be complacent. Young people that are just finishing school - heed these words! Older people, like me, back me up and convince them that what I'm saying is right! -

I try to alternate reading books for pleasure and reading books for education/personal growth. It's worked well for me because I actually read the "good-for-me" books faster to get back to a fun book. -

Oh yeah, the Navy, Veterans Affairs, and my job have paid for all my school. Great benefits for veterans and at my job. -

Calculus 2 is the hardest math class I ever had. Once you get past that, calc 3 and differential equations is pretty easy (given a solid foundation in calc 2). I haven't done any truly advanced, way-up stuff that a Math major might do though. My favorite classes are actually in Probability & Statistics. @Kaymyth, yes, dealing with children is very much like dealing with customers - or subordinates - or superiors - or people in general. -

I guess I'm one of the old men here. 40 years old with 4 children - 2 of them adults! I have a Bachelors degree in Nuclear Engineering, a Masters degree in Systems Engineering, and I'm working on a PhD in Engineering Management. As others have said, college isn't about going out and partying. You're there to get an education and most of what they teach you you'll actually use in your job (at least with technical-type degrees). I'm not saying don't have fun, just don't do as much partying as the typical young guy. Save it for the weekends and don't show up to class tired or hung over. Do your homework on time and actually study for tests. If you like being treated as an adult, then act like one. Part of being an adult is delaying pleasure until it's appropriate. A lot of the pressure college students feel is because they put things off until the last minute. There will be the occasional professor that forgets you have a life other than his/her class, but most of the time, if you work on your classes a little bit every day, you'll do fine, have plenty of time, and not be stressed. -
Random speculation: Maybe the "I did not expect to find you here." line is foreshadowing that Shallan is actually a reincarnated person from Hoid's past. Hoid knows who she is but Shallan herself doesn't. Not sure how I'd feel about reincarnation being in Brandon's books if that turned out to be true. ................ Or maybe Shallan is just really attractive and Hoid's surprise was how beautiful she was.

In America... High School = grants diploma after 12th grade - basic requirement for most jobs Trade schools = grant certificates in specialized fields, i.e. carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanic, etc... Community College = can grant an Associates degree (2 years of college) College = can grant Associates degree (2 years) or Bachelors degree (4 years of college) - some colleges also grant Masters degrees (2 years after already earning a bachelors degree) University = in addition to what a college grants, can grant a doctorate/PhD (2-4 years after already earning a Masters degree) Other points: - In a college or University, the Associates degree and Bachelors degrees are called undergraduate and the Masters and doctorates are called graduate (or postgraduate). Someone in graduate school is earning at least a Masters degree. - Universities also perform research -

Don't we already know that the Cognitive realm and the Physical realm are opposites (water in Physical realm = land in Cognitive realm and vice versa) - at least in Stormlight Archive. Just look at the maps of Roshar and Shadesmar - they are opposites/reflections.- 23 replies

The Alcatraz books are good to read for kids that age. Personally, I wouldn't let my kids read Mistborn until at least 13 but that's just me. I'm NOT judging as only you can determine what's appropriate for your kids. You might have to explain what a eunuch is, and I think Straff Venture gets slightly vulgar in book 3 (talks about breasts), but nothing worse than what you've already read. If you already discussed rape with them, I can't think of anything worse than that in any of Brandon's books. Just avoid George RR Martin and Rothfuss.

You should be! They torture people mercilessly in college! Think Pits of Hathsin, on a good day, and the damnation of the Heralds, on a bad day. And don't forget - college is full of librarians! -

Technically in college, since I'm working on a PhD, but I'm a 40 year old man in the work force - so not college age anyway. -
To help you out with figuring out if your copy is a new one, the first two changes, according to WeiryWriter, are these. They are fairly early on, so shouldn't be too spoilery. It has a Hardcover and word document page number which I'm sure doesn't correspond to the paperback page numbers. Could someone with the revised paperback post page numbers?

Yeah, my bad, I was tired. I'm an engineer too and made such a gross error. I do think your formula works better too, so let's go with that one.

I didn't read every comment, so sorry if this is repetitive. But if you like cooperative games, you have to try Pandemic, Pandemic: the Cure, Escape: the Curse of the Temple, Castle Panic, Arkham Horror, and a free game call Dead of Night you can download here. I play a lot of board games too, so if you want any more recommendations just let me know.

Well, of course, that formula was based on years of scientific research and not made-up because it kind of looks like other formulas... , so it is absolutely accurate.

To support your theory, power/energy, in general, transfers much better on contact than through space. Basically, conduction is much more efficient than convection or radiation. Examples: - An oven cooks food, but if the food were to contact the heating element, it would probably catch on fire. - I can put my hand near a hot iron and feel the warmth, but if I touch it, it will burn me. - Electricity travels through a conductor, but if the voltage is high enough, it can travel through air (larger distances = much higher voltage required to cause an arc). This brings up other interesting possibilities. Just like certain materials conduct heat or energy better than others, perhaps certain materials transfer investiture better than others. Would soulcasting underwater affect how much power is needed? With that in mind, I propose this formula: I = (p + (d^2)*m)/k Where I = total investiture needed to perform the task p = base power required to perform task (regardless of type of investiture being used) d = the distance between the person using investiture and the intended target m = a material multiplier based on the substance's resistance to Investiture k = a conductivity constant specific to the type of investiture being used (with smaller numbers equating to more investiture being needed) So, on contact, d=0, and this simplifies to just I = p/k.

Speculation: We know that the Parshendi, in storm form, are changed (evil?). What if that red comet spren are each of their original personalities. The one that was bothering Eshonai was, in fact, the original Eshonai - or her original soul or something like that. It sounded like it was in torment, so perhaps she is in damnation too?

Who first noticed Cosmere connections?

This is awesome stuff. I'm vicariously living through your original discovery of the Cosmere. And I count it a victory any time Peter posts on one of my threads. Thanks. I'm still struggling to understand Hoid. Zas, are you really Brandon in disguise? Is another one of the Admins?
