  2. Sounds to me like he's achieved immortality in our imaginations already.
  3. OK, the first two chapters of Uprooted by Naomi Novik have drawn me in, and according to reviews, the story twists quite a lot from the traditional fairy tale story. This one has the potential, at least, to be added to my favorites.
  4. I still say Clara Oswald is the Rani.

  6. How about he goes to 1963 and convinces Sydney Newman to create Dr Who to convince people that he's just a fictional character when the Doctor is real!
  7. Favourite classic companion: Sarah-Jane Smith! of course! She did get two spin-off shows after all.
  8. Worst companion: Zoe Heriot (2nd Doctor): She was just so stupid - especially considering she was supposed to be an advanced computer scientist from the future. Worst modern companion: Clara Oswald (11th and 12th Doctors): Just haven't connected with her. Disappointed with her "big mystery." This would make Clara MUCH more interesting:

  10. We're called Sticks - named after the stick.
  11. It all comes down to balance. Personally, I let my kids have 1 hour/day of "electronic entertainment" on week days or as much as they want on weekends (as long as their chores are done). We tend to plan things for weekends though, so they're usually "jipped" out of their video game time on the weekend.
  12. Yes, please don't recommend any romance books that happen to be in a fantasy setting. Some romance is great but that shouldn't be the point of the whole book. I'm still finishing up the third Fitz book and will try Novik next. I'm also reading some good books on Game Theory and Logistics!
  13. WARNING: off topic... I think it's important to differentiate commentary from news though. There are many stories that are commentary and are packaged as commentary. It's opinion. When someone bashes their least favorite news organization because of their commentary, that's not being honest. News is news and should be facts, all the facts, and nothing but the facts. What some news organizations do is only report some of the news or outright edit it to fit their agenda. When commentary is packaged as news - that's bias. Don't even get me started on MSLSDNBC... More people think the moon landing was faked than trust that sham of a news organization. They don't even try to be unbiased or conceal their bias. EDIT: I know I might be stepping on some toes here, so this is all I'm going to say about it.
  14. Just my two cents... I would say TV and movies are mindless activities. Amusements...not to be confused with entertainment... are things that let you "not think." The prefix "a-" means "not" and "muse" means think, so "amuse" means to "not think." This is not a bad thing as everyone needs down time, but on average I think we get way more down time than we need (at least in first-world countries). I'll compare it to physical activities. Exercise is good but your body needs rest too. Too much exercise actually harms your body and too much rest makes your mussels atrophy. You need both. As has been stated, you use your brain more in books and less when watching TV. So, from the perspective of relaxing and not thinking, TV is superior, and from the perspective of using your mind, books are superior. If all you do is watch TV, you will loose the ability to think for yourself and interact socially. If you never have down time (in some form - not necessarily TV), you will likewise burn out and interact negatively with people. Did you know that if you read about any subject for an hour/day, you will be an international expert on it in 7 years? I doubt the same can be said for any form of TV. For the readers among us, I recommend alternating books between entertainment books and self improvement books. For example, I've read almost as many business/engineering books as I have fiction books this year. This is a flexible rule, of course, as when BS releases a book, it gets read right away.
  15. I just recently watched Ark in Space and the villain was literally green bubble wrap wrapped around a guy's hand. So cheesy yet still a good story. Those old episode had to rely on story telling to be good. Even my 11 year old son was into it and wants to watch more classic Dr Who. He just refuses to watch it if it's black&white.
  16. Speculation: The stances have evolved over the centuries and that's why they looked unfamiliar. They may even have changed so much that they are no longer as effective against their original targets. If I had a stance that was effective against a giant stone monster called a Thunderclast, it might change quite a bit after 1000's of years with no Thunderclasts.
  17. An author that's not very big but a personal friend of mine is David Walton. He's a recipient of the 2008 Philip K. Dick Award for his first novel, Terminal Mind. His latest book, SUPERPOSITION, is a quantum physics thriller with the same mind-bending feel as films like Inception and Minority Report. He is also the author of Quintessence, a science fantasy in which the Earth is really flat. If any of you have read his books, let me know.
  18. This is a great find! +1 You're obviously speculating here but it's certainly plausible.
  19. I'd settle for book 6 before GRRM dies. Of course I know an author that's great at finishing up people's work.
  20. But what's brown and red and sticky?
  21. ''Did you ever find the guy?'' ''What guy?'' ''The guy who beat you with the ugly stick!''
  22. What's brown and sticky?
  23. I'm actually finishing Robin Hobbs 3rd Fitz book right now and I like it a lot more than the first two. I think being stuck with a single POV character is what is keeping me from loving it, but I still like it a lot. Peter said her Liveship books feel more Epic, so those are going on the "to read soon" list. I've never read Cherryh (hard to believe since she's so popular), so I'll pick something up by her too. The Historical Fiction genre is pretty good and I like it almost as much as Epic Fantasy. I'm actually recommending Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series to my wife.
  24. I think re-reads are what really do it for me. When I re-read my favorite authors, I pick up on many things that I missed the first time through, but some books just don't have that "pick it up and read it again" quality. I just started a class that's going to take a lot more time than anticipated, so it might be a while before I give you any feedback. I plan to try Naomi Novik this Summer though.
