  1. Mr T asked for “Capacity to stop what was coming. The capacity to save humankind.” What if we (and Mr T) have it backwards? What if his intelligence is the curse and his compassion is the boon? Hoid said that salvation would be found in the hearts of men, which sounds like compassion to me. So if his intelligence is a curse, then The Diagram will only harry The Desolation, not prevent or stop it.
  2. Being a native Texan, I can say that Texas is more "Southwest" than "South", regardless of it's geographical location. The way I see it the "South" has plantations (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, etc... Think "Gone with the Wind") while the "Southwest" (or, typically, the "West") has ranches (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona... Think John Wayne and Clint Eastwood).
  3. There's already a topic about this in the "Events, Signings, and Stalking" page: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4159-steelhunt/
  4. I think the catch was that, technically, the Seons themselves were not the splinters, but, rather the Aeons inside them were. The question I asked him in Houston was related to this, and he said that the Seons and the Skaze "weren't supposed to be there", and they were created after Odium killed Devotion and Dominion and Splintered their shards.
  5. Posted Audio of the Houston Steelheart signing here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4184-houston-signing/ (2nd post) Includes 2 Readings, one from Shadows of Self (Mistborn Adventures 2) and the prologue of Words of Radiance.
  6. In addition to the codes left at the Houston Airport (IAH), Brandon said that he had hidden 2 Steelhunt codes within Murder by the Book (the store he signed at) itself. He gave two hints: (yells angrily with his fists raised in the air) and "Iron Man". My guess was something to do with The Avengers (with the former hinting at The Hulk), but I was unable to find any. Pooh.
  7. I was also at the signing, and I have audio of the whole thing, including the Shadows of Self reading and the Words of Radiance Prologue. I am in the process of uploading them for transcription. One thing I was able to ask when I got up there was "You've said that Seons and Skaze contain splinters of Devotion and Dominion. Were these splinters created when Odium killed the shardholders and Splintered their shards? Or are they more similar to how Endowment splinters himself (herself? I don't remember if I used any gendered pronouns here, but if I did, it would have been "him", and he didn't correct me) to make divine breaths? What is the difference between the two?" First, he said that it was a very good question. Then he said that those splinters weren't supposed to be there, and they were indeed created when Odium splintered the shards. He said that the difference lies in how each magical system works. Endowment's splinters are more similar to how Preservation invested a little bit of her shard into each human on Scadrial. EDIT: Audio can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/lazerwulf214 Should go Intro -> Q&A 1 -> Shadows of Self -> Q&A 2 -> Words of Radiance Unfortunately, there's about 15 seconds of silence at about 9:52 in the Intro. I recorded this from my iPhone and must have accidentally covered up the phone's microphone. The two readings start with the reading itself, but there's a bit of intro to each at the end of the previous tracks.
  8. At the Houston signing. Front row. Black shirt.
  9. From what I gather from the context of the thread, this is a reply to wetlandernw, who presumably was the one who posited the question, from Traveler, who was the one who actually asked it at the signing. Here is the original comment thread: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/09/the-way-of-kings-reread-chapters-31-and-32#comments The comment I originally quoted was #54. I copy/pasted it directly (hense the [sic] at the end of the quote), but I believe, in keeping with the style of the thread, this should have looked like this: I was the one who suggested he post this himself, but he said he was having troubles with the site.
  10. I think it's been said that Seons contain the splinters of Devotion and the Skaze (a.k.a. "evil" Seons) contain the splinters of Dominion.
  11. I've got a question I've been saving for the Houston signing. I will try to get there early enough to record the Q&A (if there is one, though there probably will be). Also, in the interview transcript, the Resealing question got PAFO'd instead of RAFO'd. Is there a difference, or was that a typo?
  12. This is from Traveler, also from the WoK reread comments. Apparently he(?) was at the release. [sic]
  13. If you used to live in Houston, then you should know that when people say "I'm from Houston" to people not from Houston, they could be from anywhere from Katy to the Woodlands to Friendswood. As a point of fact, though, I live in the Clear Lake area, which is actually within the Houston City Limits, even though it's halfway between Downtown and Galveston on I-45. MbtB is in the same area as The Galleria, Texas Medical Center, Houston Zoo, and Rice University, in the southwestern-ish area of the inside of the 610 Loop. Which is pretty far out of the way for me to take a trip just to get the book, then turn right around 3 days later to go to the signing. It's probably all for the best, though. If I got it now, I'd probably end up staying up all night to finish it. The signing's on a Friday, which means I'll have all weekend (to catch up on my sleep).
  14. Just ordered my book from Murder by the Book for the Houston signing. I'm 6th in line. Unfortunately, since the store is all the way across town, I won't be able to read it until I pick it up at the actual signing.
  15. Got into a discussion about this over on the Tor.com Way of Kings re-read. I seem to have (independently, since I only just now found this thread) come up with the idea that the Shattered Plains were Urithiru turned to stone, that the "plains" were the tops of buildings, and that the "chasms" were the streets and alleys, and "The Tower" was a literal tower were they would watch for oncoming highstorms. As to why all the "buildings" were the same height, and essentially ground level, I keep thinking about the city built into the side of a mountan (Kharbranth? I can't remember exactly) as protection from the highstorm, and that the city would have been carved out from the ground in a similar manner, and for a similar reason. Since the city is being built "down" and not "up", it would make sense that the buildings would be all the same height, except for the tower, which is where the town watch (or the Stormwardens, maybe?) would warn the citizens of an oncoming highstorm, and the people would "batten down the hatches" so to speak. The wind would blow harmlessly over the tops of the buildings, and the water would pass through the streets/canals, washing away anything or anyone that was carelessly left outside. (The Tower itself seems to have been big enough to presume that it was built specifically to withstand the highstorms.) As to why the city would have been turned to stone, I have no idea, but I cannot help but think that it has something to do with the Splintering of Honor. (As for the how, I did not think about Soulcasting, though in retrospect, it does seem obvious).
  16. Haven't seen a topic for this, so might as well start one. I'll be at the Houston signing on the 27th. 17. Hi, I'm LazerWulf, or Lazer for short. (If you've seen a LazerWulf elsewhere, that's probably me, though I'm not affiliated with the Metal band from Georgia. I've been using this name for longer than they've been around, anyway.) I discovered Brandon through the Wheel of Time, which a friend of mine recommended to me. This was around the time Towers of Midnight came out, so I was able to quickly plow through the series. After I got through ToM, I was impressed enough with Brandon's writing that I quickly tore through all of his works, and love them all. Not long after this, Brandon came to Houston for the Alloy of Law tour, which is where I first heard about Hoid (a fan asked a question about where he'd be in AoL). When I got home, I dived into the Coppermind Wiki and just fell in love with the idea of the Cosmere. I'm semi-active in the comments of the Way of Kings reread on tor.com, and have read through most of the interviews on Theoryland (at least, the ones that have been linked to in the wiki). Although, as much as I love the Cosmere, my favorite series of Brandon's is Alcatraz. I'm also a big fan of Jim Butcher and Pat Rothfuss. Currently, I am reading through R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt Do'Urdeen novels.
