That's probably because that's how Hoid thinks of them. Brandon confirmed that Hoid was around when Adonalsium shattered and he's been travelling around keeping an eye on all the pieces ever since as far as we know. He probably knew many of the shard holders personally before they took up their shards. Kind of the way we all tend to refer to Harmony as Sazed, because we knew the character as himself before he took took up the shards and became Harmony. Certainly based on how Hoid talks about Rayse's personality, he knew the man when he was still a man, and so that's how he still thinks of him.

So if I understand correctly, the theory is that Shard power can manifest in three ways: solid=physical aspect, liquid=cognitive aspect, and gas=spiritual aspect. So lets test it and see if it can be applied to the other Shards (besides Ruin and Preservation) without having to reach too much. If we assume (and this is a pretty big assumption so it could be way off) that power that manifests as light is of the same aspect (spiritual) as power manifest as gas (like the mists), then for Honor on Roshar one could say Stormlight is the spiritual aspect, gemstones could be the physical, and some pool somewhere could be the cognitive? Or perhaps the cognitive is manifesting as the storms themselves - maybe the pool is reforming and draining like in Mistborn, only its happening a lot faster. For Aona, we know where her Shardpool is and it does seem to be sentient (it talks to Raoden) so that seems to support it being cognitive. Maybe the spiritual aspect of Aona is the Dor itself (the light emitted when Aons are drawn by Elantrians, etc.), and the physical aspect is something unknown, or it could be the city of Elantris itself maybe. In BioChroma, Breath seems like a good canditate for the spiritual aspect, but I don't have any idea about the cognitive or physical, though I know people have specualted about the flowers - the Tears of Edgli(sp?) being where Endowment's pool is, and since color is what is required to make inanimate objects come to life I could see the colors (the liquid dyes made from those flowers) containing cognitive aspect energy. Maybe Endowment's pool works like Ruin's pool did, when color is used up it coalesces again in the flowers the way when atium was used it coalesced again in the pits. In fact, based on how Ruin's pool works (some liquid essence dripping to become beads of Atium or at least that's how I assume it works) then we have to take into account the idea that the power of a Shard can change aspects - cognitive energy can be transformed into phsyical energy, etc. Edit: Maybe this needs a new thread of its own, it covers a lot more than just shardpools. Sorry.

I got into fantasy, and reading in general, because of my older brother. He knew I didn't really like to read, and told me that it was because I wasn't reading the right books. He basically forced me to start reading beginning with books like Redwall, The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, and David Eddings (The Belgariad and the Mallorean). By the time I hit middle school he had me reading the Wheel of Time. I think he wanted me to read fantasy so that I could keep up when he created a live RPG and got all his friends involved creating their own characters and playing out stories with pretend swords in our back yard.

I have had this experience with David Edding's Belgariad. I read it when I was in middle school and loved it, it was my favorite series at the time. Reading it now, I find it simple and a little cliche, however I still think that when my kids are that age, I will suggest that they read Eddings before handing them WoT or the Stormlight Archive, because I realize that for a younger reader just starting out in fantasy, it is a great place to start. Having read books like Eddings' Belgariad and Brian Jaques (sp?) Redwall books helped me develop my reading skills so that I could handle the learning curve that more complicated series like WoT require of readers. So while I may not enjoy re-reading some of the early fantasy that I read, I would still recommend them to first time fantasy readers. Of course, I would probably hand Elantris to my kid right after they finished with Eddings.

I'm thinking of the description in the Prelude that the Thunderclasts had to rip themselves out of the stone for the battle. It makes me think that they were dormant somehow, having fused with the stone around them. No one has ever seen what the Chasmfiends turn into and there's no reference to how long it would take for a chasmfiend to transform into whatever it is they become. What if that's because they seem to actually turn into the stone, and only break out of their chrysalis when it comes time for them to fight. Maybe they would stay there on the plateaus, basically becoming a part of rock around them until they were called forth by Odium to fight in the desolations. Crem and sediment from the storms would build up around them, and they would feed on stormlight to keep themselves alive in their dormant state. I imagine that before the war, there were not many people on the Shattered Plains, and the pupating chasmfiends would have been left alone there for a long time. There could be dormant thunderclasts all over that area without anyone realizing it.

The King's Servants (contains spoilers)
LightReader replied to stormlight's topic in Stormlight Archive
I mentioned in the speculation-for-book-two thread that I thought Adolin's girlfriend Danlan would turn out to be some sort of spy. I was thinking Sadeas or the Ghostbloods. I hadn't thought of Taravangian specifically, though he might be a Ghostblood, that seems unclear still. I think sending girls to date Adolin would be a very Taravangian thing to do though. I thought Danlan beacause she seems to last the longest, and is the one he's still courting at the end of the book. I hadn't thought that Malasha and the others could be spies too. I like this theory, I think it could make for a cool twist if this turned out to be true. -
I can see the Ten Fools simply being the modern folklore version of the Unmade, and I like the idea of them being Odium's version of the Heralds. And them being known as "personifications of kinds of destruction" makes me think they are regarded something like the four horsemen of the apocalypse. However, I still think they were real individuals, like the Heralds, who are similarly each associated with specific honorable ideals.

We know the Parshendi must have had shardplate and blades before they signed the treaty with Gavilar, so maybe the Parshendi took his plate and blade? Although, I'm not sure how they could have, since there were a lot of people around. That seems to be how it works on the Shattered Plains though, whoever kills the Shardbearer gets the plate and blade. Maybe showing off Gavilar's plate and blade was how they proved to the Alethi that they were the ones behind the assassination? Though, I would have expected this to be mentioned during Dalinar's thoughts about the Parshendi claiming responsibility for Gavilar's murder. So maybe the location of Gavilar's plate will turn out to be important somehow and that would make this a RAFO question.

I think that girl from True Grit is a great idea for Vin. As for Nathan Fillion, based on his work in Castle, I could actually see him playing Breeze before Ham or Kelsier, not that I really see him in Mistborn at all. And Zachary Quinto as Marsh. He would look awesome as an Inquisitor, and would be great at portraying Marsh's mental struggles in the third book (assuming they make movies of those too). I still can't decide on Kelsier or Sazed though, I think those two are the hardest to pick for.

This is a very well thought out theory. I'm wondering what other sorts of Spren will be connected to powers. We know of Truth and Honor so far, attracted to people who are truthful (though this is questionable considering Shallan) and honorable. Also, Jasnah seems to know about the Symbolheads, however, she and Shallan do not seem to have exactly the same powers. Are the Spren that Jasnah interacts with actually slightly different? Knowledgespren maybe, similar in appearance and function, but attracted to a different attribute. Maybe Jasnah has to share a piece of knowledge instead of say something true (which seems like basically the same thing, and the distinction being so small is why they can both be called Soulcasters - just two varieties of Soulcaster). Maybe I'm reaching a bit here. I wonder if there are kinds of spren that are related to ideals or human attributes like Hopespren, Compassionspren, or Determinationspren, that are also usually mistaken for other kinds of spren, the way Honorspren are mistaken for windspren?

I could totally see Hoid having the ability to just shove Gaz into Shadesmar and leave him there until he decides to let him out again. Of course, Gaz would probably come out totally schizophrenic, especially since he was already going a little crazy because of his missing eye. I'm still hoping that Hoid is a good guy and would try to avoid killing people.

I think that Szeth's assasination attempt on Dalinar will be awesome and something totally unexpected will happen. I also think it won't be right at the beginning of the book. Since Jasnah is friends with Taravangian, I think it would be really interesting if he sent Szeth to travel with them to the Shattered Plains. Jasnah will be suspicious of him since he's Shin, or maybe he'll be in disguise so she doesn't realize he's Shin. I could see Taravangian being good at disguises. I don't think Szeth will become a good guy, at least not for quite a while, but I do think he's going to be totally shocked to meet another Windrunner who can use his powers. I really want to find out how Szeth learned about the Windrunners in the first place, I'm wondering if he could have something to do with Teft's people being mostly killed off. I think there will definitely be a big Szeth/Kaladin/Adolin fight, and maybe Jasnah will use her lightning too. Shallan will get out of the way, not wanting to expose her secret shardblade but she'll take several Memories of the fight and then draw them. I don't think anyone will die in the fight though, except maybe some unnamed soldiers or one of Kaladin's bridgemen since they'll be acting as Dalinar's bodyguards (that'll make Kaladin really mad). I think Szeth will decide he has to pull back and try again later to kill Dalinar, because he's not sure he can win (he'll be excited about fighting people who might actually stand a chance of killing him but he won't be able to let them do it) and since they aren't his targets, he won't want to kill them if he can avoid it. Kaladin will learn a lot from the fight though, and I think it will also trigger some manifestation of Dalinar's Radiant abilities. Elhokar will freak out and assume that Szeth was really there to kill him instead, maybe he'll manifest some powers too. I could see Szeth returning to Taravangian after the fight and having recognized the honor and goodness of Dalinar & co. decide to kill Taravangian, or maybe just steal back his oathstone and take off on his own for a while. I think that there won't be a direct confrontation between Kaladin and Amaram for a while, I think there will be some politicking there, and Dalinar will want to know why Kaladin hates Amaram so much - even more than he hates Sadeas. I think Shallan will have a big crush on Adolin, but Renarin will have a big crush on Shallan. Adolin is still going to be courting that girl Danlan (who I think might turn out to be some sort of spy for Sadeas or maybe the Ghostbloods, she did sort of show up out of no where). I think it will take longer for anything to develop between Shallan and Kaladin because of the whole darkeyes/lighteyes scandal of it all, plus Syl is going to really hate Shallan since she has a shardblade. I'm hoping for a Shallan book. I want to learn more about the Ghostbloods and about how she killed her father, etc. I also hope we get some Jasnah viewpoints, and maybe a bit of Taln again too. Hopefully we'll get to see some of Kholinar through Taln. Maybe he'll be our interlude character like Szeth was in book 1. Elhokar is going to have fits over Dalinar courting his mother, while Jasnah will have more of an "its about time" reaction. I'm curious to see what sort of relationship Jasnah and Elhokar will have as siblings. Elhokar needs to tell Jasnah about seeing the symbol heads so she can help him get over his paranoia a little. I would also like to see them both interact with Navani. Anyways, sorry this is so long and rambling... I think I might actually be more excited about Stormlight 2 than I am for aMoL.

I don't think such a job does exist, although I'm thinking about trying to get into being an Editor. So far my stories are incomplete ones. I haven't been writing for very long yet. People as in, human nature, psychology, figuring out what makes people tick. Also making new friends.

Hi. I'm new, both to this forum and to forums in general. I started as a WoT fan I've read the entire series three times, and some of the books more than that (way too much free time I know, though I read WoT the first time when I was in middle school). I went out and bought Mistborn as soon as I heard Brandon Sanderson would be taking over for RJ. Now I've read all of Sanderson's books at least twice, and since reading Way of Kings, I've decided that Brandon Sanderson is now officially my favorite fantasy author. I'm interested in writing, I've dabbled a bit with writing stories of my own, but I think my real dream job would involve getting paid to read books. Other interests include physics, people, singing, and gardening.

Why "The Stormlight Archive?" (Spoilers)
LightReader replied to Finallity's topic in Stormlight Archive
The visions that Dalinar has, those are like a collection of archive footage put together by The Almighty before he died aren't they? Other possible candidates to be in-world authors of something called "The Stormlight Archive" could be Jasnah as a historian, or Sigzil as a storyteller, though neither of them would have memories of the time before the last desolation. Taln is a possibility since he's a Herald and would remember previous desolations, but we don't know enough about his personality to know if he's the type to do a lot of writing, and he would only have memories of the desolations themselves since he spent all the time in between living in Damnation. -
Michael Shanks from Stargate for Dockson. Sean Maher (Dr. Tam) or Tom Hiddleston (Loki from Thor) as TLR. Someone new as Vin. Maybe Ellen Page if she can pull off the action fight scenes. James McAvoy could be Elend, but he might be too old too. Scarlett Johansson with dark hair or Jaimie Alexander (Sif from Thor) as Shan Elariel.
