Top 10 theories going into Oathbringer
FollowYourMuse replied to bdoble97's topic in Stormlight Archive
It isn't an argument to be have, Brandon confirmed Dalinar was too hard on Adolin: he puts him up to impossible standards. He also confirmed Adolin was the child having gotten the least attention within his family. As for Elhokar, Dalinar is too lenient with him, this will become more obvious in Oathbringer. In shorts, Dalinar is a man of extreme and when it comes to his children, he took two extreme positions: he is too hard on one and too lenient on the other (that includes Elhokar). His relationship with Adolin is... problematic. He projects a lot. His behavior towards Elhokar exists because he felt guilty over being jealous at Gavilar, this is actually featured in one of the flashback chapters. On the other hand, his behavior towards Adolin is because he can't forgive himself for the man he once was, hence he is hard, harsh even. He can't love Adolin as much as loves others because he can't love himself. @maxal thankI you... I was not aware of WoB on this, it's one thing I don't see even in multiple rereads. I agree he is too leniant on Ehlokar, and expects too little from Renarin. But don't see him as harsh or too hard on Adolin. The involved loving father is something more of current times. So this is something that I missed completely. In addition, I would not expect a parent in a feudal, war and status driven culture to be any different. -

I see your point here, I have just never bought into the Dalinar is too hard on Adolin. Dalinar already learned the lesson that he needed to hold others to standards, he also has treated Ehlokar as the child he is just don't see this as enough of a story arc. Ehlokar needs to grow and I agree with @Toaster Retribution I think there are numerous options n that could be done. But I think it needs to be without Dalinar, as much as e complains of his uncle being right or saving things, he also relied on others to do the job. -

If Ehlokar is going to grow or learn I think it will be more of a side story and from others not from any of the main pov. Perhaps one or more of the bridgemen. Though I want to see them stay together as bridge 4, Kaladin has gone off without them, and I sent some still attaching themselves to the king, Dalinar and Adolin. -

Regarding the voice that Kade hears. We k now that after taking storm form Eshonai hears voices and advice. Other voices heard we have seen are from spren to those they have bonded. The only other possibility I can think of might be a lightweaver, or truthwatcher using sound illusion, though could be a herald with an honorblade with illumination also. -

The only other ideas I get are loyalty, or his ability to see the promise or possibilities of others. -

I like this, and thinking about it I think there is more evidence, I don't have books handy, but in WoR after Shallon recruits the deserters Pattern mentions Shallon Transforms them. I was thinking that was more patterns language skills, in her motivating them, but now I am thinking there maybe more to it. I know there is at least one mention of Skybreakers able to discern guilt or something like that. -

I think the visions were the same, but what Gavilar did, or how he did or did not interact made a difference in how he interpreted them. We know Dalinar had been getting the visions for months, but how long had Gavilar been having them? How much more time and resources to investigate did he have? Gavilar had something that drove him to unite (conquer), the high princes more than 20 years ago. -

There are many small new clues and riddles, like Venli has been more active and involved for longer than previously known. But the one thing that has me really curious is that Gavilar acts and responds to Eshonai, almost as if he can hear the rhythms. -

The one female as Adrotegia makes sense. The other two an unknown officer, and perhaps his wife. I am having difficulty with thinking it is Restares being described as an officer. That description would also eliminate any of the high princes. -
I agree Rlain would be great, actually i would like any of Bridge four POV during the bridge runs or the final battle, but Rlain during any of them would be really good. Ehlokar (What did he think when he wakes up from drunken injured stupor, and findshe is hiding out with the Herdazians?) Venli - What did she know when she gave Eshonai that storm spren? Thude as he escapes with the Parshendi through the chasm. Navani POV at anytime especially flashbacks.

is the street urchin more than she seems?
FollowYourMuse replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
The urchin girl scene is full of interesting things! First the fact that Lift instinctively understands her and "speaks" the girls Urchin dialect. Even Wyndle points this out and Lift says something about words is words. Much like the Oaths it is the meaning behind them not the words themselves. This exchange with the urchin girl is the most obvious but throughout the Novella it is seams that Lift hears what others maybe do not. That as Part of listening she has the extra boost to hear what is said, or done or maybe not even really stated. (ie hear the meaning behind the words) This street urchin is the second urchin we have that shows some understanding above what is expected. The urchin from the Ym Interlude makes comments and shows understanding above what Ym thought he would. We know also that spren bond to children like Shallon as a young child. Many of these children are broken, so may be more open to the spren and to the messages, visions or other means that information and investiture is leaking into Roshar. The other option is the girl was really an Aimian. -
Thanks all I had it reversed in my notes !

I am not sure if we have seen her, but I think we now have names for "Chach" The herald for the Releasers. Navani "swears" by Chana twice, and then the temple wall of Chanaranach that Shallan speaks of:
-
I had started thinking about this, I think that the Cryptics were hanging around Ehlokar, (spying? watching? meddling?) the same way they were hanging around Taravangian, (Possibly other rulers or important people?) and stopped so they would not be discovered by Syl and the honor spren. Pattern has been with Shallan since she was a kid. I have considered that the Cryptics that were watching Taravangian started watching her / chasing her because of who she was and Pattern, but that they were there to begin with and stayed, not with any intention of bonding with him. This shows cryptics around with T's "special" healers, Shallan was no where near this scene.

I don't think we know if it is Lopen that is King of the Herdazians.
-
True but they do have the Gravity Surge and Tension .... I do not see how those 2 could not be combined into some kind of flying, or floating at the least. They have not been mentioned to fly, but I do not see anywhere they have been noted as not flying

My first impression was that Lyatil might be one of the Heralds. But reading this she could be a Worldhopper also, though she is fairly involved as one. It seems most of the worldhopper play a role but are not quite as involved in local plots and plans as she appears to be. If she had some kind of Investiture though wouldn't she have seen that Shallan was wearing an Illusion? or see her use stormlight when she switched faces for the gaurds?

Ok my age showing here ... I know many that married from High School or in their teens - early 20's, and have lasted decades, In fact more have lasted that did not. Adolin is 23 , Shallan is 17 I do not think it odd that Adolin and Shallan would have a shallow relationship they have been courting for what a few weeks? Most relationships at this point are shallow. We also do not know what the cultural practices are, other than arranged marriages, We know Dalinar courted his wife for 3 years, that Nan-Balat and Eylita have been betrothed about a year.. at least 1 year ago he was planning on running away with her. So it would appear that courtships can last awhile. The fact that she was able to be more "herself" with Kaladin was in part because she did not see him as a romantic possibility. (Yes that could always change) I do think Shallan is developing into a better less shallow and less flat character, (By far less flat and shallow than Vin) By the end she was finally starting to think beyond herself. I see Shallan as shallow for the following reasons. - Though to be fair, In some ways it may be more that she is young and though intelligent also fairly selfish, naive and inexperienced. She is more concerned with what others think of herself and putting on the appearance of being someone else than of changing herself. She just falls into whatever personality or actions of those around her, even the personality of her we see is more an act. Her quips and insults have reverted back to what they were before Jasnah tried to get her to grow. Jasnah pushed her to be more and to think, It is Pattern that forces her to be less shallow, to accept truths, and accept herself.

Adolin radiant or NOT? (SPOILER WOR)
FollowYourMuse replied to Bobobagins's topic in Stormlight Archive
I second the Stonewards, is a good possibility, from what we know of them they were the Radiants that kept the arts of war, and Adolin fits that well. I posted here on this. -
Both Adolin and Shallan are shallow and imature, so I do not see an issue there. I have to agree here .... The growing friendship and respect between Kaladin and Adolin was great and real ... I think I would find it the best if Shallan didn't end up with either of them if it would harm this.
-
True, Kaladins scars are too much a part of who he is now - or who he thinks he is now. Though until we know how Jasnah pulled that one off, I can not say for sure that it was healing and not something else.
-
The re-growing of his arm is suspicious as possibly more than just squire level - it does seem more like growth - re-growth than standard stormlight healing. On the other hand since I want Lopen to fly maybe he will be one of the 3 Bondsmiths ?

Adolin radiant or NOT? (SPOILER WOR)
FollowYourMuse replied to Bobobagins's topic in Stormlight Archive
I do not think that killing Sadeas eliminates Adolin from possible KR status, none of the known Radiants has a squeaky clean past, in fact Adolin could be said to be the "best" of any of them until this. What I do see is the killing of Sadeas has set him up as a character, adding some internal conflict, guilt? and struggle. Adolin, though he grew up some in WoR has a way to go and is still "young" unlike Lift, Shallan or Kaldin he has not had the hard life that led to him growing up fast. Nor has he been broken, or really had to face many struggles until recently. To become a Radiant he will need to give up his blade, (maybe), accept the values of one of the radiants - on his own in his own belief, not just as a son/soldier following orders, In WoR he had started to see they why and the reasons for Dalinar following the codes, but I think it takes more it will take understanding in his own heart. I am still unsure of Jasnah's past but I believe there has been some struggle, if nothing else against the status and placement of women. in some ways she has spent her life fighting against the norm, from the role of a Kings daughter, to a woman to the religion.
