  1. 1) Seeing as you can see through the bubble, I don't see electrons having much of a problem with distortion. Now, for them to use Bendalloy to compress information that they send through transmission lines, and decompress it on the other end, freeing up 85-98% of the capacity in the process (once they get good enough technology). 2) I believe that the force is (or can be) spread out over an area, so it would spread out into a thin sheet. For an example of this situation in the books, look at when Vin got in a pushing match with Kelsier, the coin was warped and twisted, contrary to our theories so far (though it was probably just from random variations in their pushes). 3)The flames would grow to 8x or 20x the size (depending on the speed of the bubble) before the fire was put out, and would dissipate once they weren't getting fuel. Bendalloy would shrink flames inside of it with external fuel by a similar factor. Interestingly, if you built a fire just inside the top edge of a Bendalloy bubble, you could shoot some pretty amazing flames out of it. 4) If by weight, you mean mass, then that is correct. I am fairly sure that pewter Feruchemy stores muscles, so it would increase or decrease your weight the same amount that exercising or atrophy would, but faster. The extra bulk decreases your agility, as seen in Sazed's fight with the Koloss army. Metalminds (at least Sazed's) are designed to expand to deal with pewter Feruchemy. I believe that this was from the fight with the koloss as well. I believe that iron and pewter Feruchemy could both be used to increase your weight, and would stack multiplicatively with each other. For example, if you tapped iron to double your mass, then used pewter to grow to twice your normal size while maintaining tapping iron at the same rate, you would become 4x as heavy. 5) By definition, there would be no sonic boom (sound cannot travel faster than mach 1 to make one). I doubt if there would even be a very loud noise, or else it would not work to have a conversation inside one without deafening everyone outside of it.
  2. I missed that one. I agree that rustling shirts is not very strong evidence as he identifies himself as the storm, but Szeth seeming to see him, as well as him having (presumably) accurate, real time visions of the world is definitely magic of one kind or another.
  3. I've been trying to limit it to things that we've seen people (not fabrials or Spren) do in the present day, so most of these are outside of what I'm looking at. Good catch on Dalinar's strength though.
  4. We do not see anyone react to Dalinar regaining his feet. Their amazement comes after, when he quickly and gracefully jumps under the claw and catches it (which appears to be something that only Dalinar could do). As I said before, I think the emphasis on (and even the mention of) something seeming to right was the narrator telling the reader that there was something worth noticing happening. I still do not think that it was Dalinar remarking on something exceptional.
  5. Are they innovating from or fully understanding everything in the documents of Founding? if electricity (but not telegraphs) was included, it would be a simple explanation of how that gap would occur in their technology.
  6. I took it as Brandon telling the reader that something magical was happening, as opposed to Dalinar remarking on something unforeseen. I took it to be equivalent to the following quotes, remarkable to the reader, but below the character's notice. None of these quotes show things that would be remarkable to the characters or significant to the action, but they are told to the reader to give insight into the working of Shardplate.
  7. That is completely different from how I interpreted that scene. The Plate did not magically exert a force that turned Dalinar upright, as can be seen in a wider context: Dalinar had plenty of time to react to his slide and correct for it, and in fact he did. The most that the Shardplate did was help his sense of balance, which I believe it does for everyone.
  8. Because we haven't seen them in (the body of) the books yet. There are indications that they are alive and that we've seen them, but the best ideas that we have at identifying the others are theories and guesses.
  9. Adding Taln, although it will be a fairly sparse entry. Anyone else that was missed?
  10. It isn't at all, it's just more confirmation that there is something special about Dalinar. Editing the post for clarity.
  11. A couple more relevant quotes: Based on the following quote, I believe that good balance is intrinsic to all Shardplate, much like the ability to feel through the gauntlets or see through the faceplate. (from just before Kaladin kills the nameless Shardbearer, protecting Amaram): Also, here's a quote that may help to further illustrate Dalinar's power. In combination with his actions during the chasmfiend hunt, this is strong evidence that there is not a mundane explanation for all of Dalinar's actions (tricks of light, adrenaline, etc). (about Dalinar, after he killed the squad of archers that would have killed Bridge 4) EDIT: edited order for clarity.
  12. Pretty sure that Roshar is a sphere. Aside from the fact that it is definitely a planet (as opposed to a discworld, Halo, or it's own endless plane of existence), Hoid talks about a world spinning being unnoticeable to those on it to Dalinar (IIRC).
  13. We know of a few people that can use Stormlight to fuel magical powers, and suspect many others. Here's what I've found so far: Kaladin Direct evidence of Stormlight use: He inhales Stormlight many times. Magical abilities: Has a vision in a Highstorm. Sees a face (the stormfather?) in a Highstorm (though there may be nothing special about him seeing it). to heal, gain energy, gain physical enhancement, and reverse and full lash objects. "rides the storm". Szeth Evidence: He inhales Stormlight many times as well. Magic: In addition to basic lashings, the same as Kaladin (except for Highstorm visions) Jasnah Evidence: Her gemstones dim when she Soulcasts. Magic: Her hand sinks into objects immediately before transforming them. She can transform objects by touching them. She can transform objects at a distance (note: this did not target their clothes as well, unlike transformation by touch.) She can visit and have control over Shadesmar. She may not be not harmed by essences that she transforms (not burned by thief turned to fire, not coughing on smoke from the stone) Shallan Evidence: Her garnet broam becomes dim after she soulcasts the goblet into blood. There is no direct evidence that going to Shadesmar used Stormlight, only that it was foolish to go with only a dim sphere. Magic: Can transform objects by touch. She can visit Shadesmar. Her drawing and memorization ability may be magical, as it allows her to see the symbolheads. Can hear and telepathically speak to the symbolheads. Elhokar Evidence: An unlikely number of his gemstones were shattered in his Shardplate on the Chasmfiend hunt. Magic: Can see the symbolheads. Dalinar Evidence: None (although absence of evidence is not evidence of absence) Magic: Shardplate glows. Has visions during Highstorms. May be faster and more agile than others in Shardplate. Is stronger than others in Shardplate. May have supernatural balance in Shardplate as well, though that may be all sets of Plate. Various Bridgemen Evidence: Quote (though it may be Kaladin draining their spheres.): Magic: none.Taln Evidence: None (though he is a Herald) Magic: Resurrection, knowledge of when a Desolation comes (though this may be a function of his resurrection) Other Heralds Evidence: None (though they are Heralds) Magic: Alive after 4500 years. EDITS: added Dalinar's visions, Kaladin's visions and Kaladin seeing he face in the storm. Added the other Heralds. Added Dalinar's strength (catching chasmfiend claw). Added Kaladin riding the Storm, removed the vision reference in Kaladin.
  14. Seems like we've come full circle. Keep in mind though, there are a few more possibilities other than those you've listed. 1. Assuming we have Jasnah's order correct, Shallan could be in the same one. Vice versa for if we have Shallan's order correct. 2. We have both orders wrong, and they are something like orders 9 and 10, though nothing fits nearly as well.
  15. I don't think that Jasnah is from order 7. Although there is no direct contradictions, she only fits with one trait of the order (Wise), as opposed to 5 traits for order 2 (Smokestone, Exhalation, smoke, Just, and Confident) if its divine attributes are just and confident as I believe they are, or 4 if they are as written (which is apparently wrong).
  16. Dalinar also "seemed to glow" after killing a group of archers that was going to kill Bridge 4. Still need to find that quote, but he still had his Blade out. EDIT: Quote:
  17. A second according to the perspective inside of the bubble, or outside of it? That would make a huge difference in its utility.
  18. Those are valid objections, but I'm not dismissing this idea just yet. Of the 10 Heralds, exactly 5 were women, though that may be because of symmetry and not a magical reason. Also, the Divine Attributes do not determine your personality, it only determines whether or not you gain access to magic through it. A woman could have a strong Protecting/Leading personality, but it doesn't mean that she would gain access to Windrunner powers from it, unlike a man would (and vice versa for Creative/Honest). Another thing is that (in my opinion) the attributes of the odd orders fit with Roshar's male gender roles more closely than with female ones, and the even orders fit with female gender roles better. Of course, if the even orders were all women and the odd orders all men, it would mean that Shallan and Jasnah would need to be in the same order in order to share the power of soulcasting. EDIT: Kalak, the male Herald in the prelude is associated with order 8. There goes that theory.
  19. Soulcasting is a power. Quote from Jasnah:
  20. It's somewhat contrived, but my thought was that she created a channel of low (magical? air?) pressure between herself and the muggers, which helped to draw the stormlight to them. The second reason is that I felt it had to be either gravity or pressure that she shared with the Windrunners (because she's in the next order), and gravity made no sense in that context.
  21. Another way of dealing with the isolation of space: Dump all of your memories of the trip into copperminds, so you only remember the last few days. Your attitudes are based on memories (maybe), which wouldn't be too bad if you only remembered a week of isolation at any given time.
  22. I had assumed that striking down the men in the alley from a distance was a combination of pressure and soulcasting, as it fits intuitively for me, though there is no evidence for this.
  23. I don't think that steel pushes would have any effect over astronomical distances, they drop off to nothing in far less than the diameter of a city, which is tiny compared to space. The only (metallic arts) way I could see steering working is through introducing momentum to a closed system using iron Feruchemy. As for calculating complex equations, compounded mental speed, anyone?
  24. Doesn't Hoid have a different appearance (and maybe a completely different body) every time we have seen him so far? This would neatly avoid him getting interplanetary traveller's sickness, although I'm not sure how it would work for anyone else.
  25. If the traveller had fine enough control over Iron Feruchemy, it would be possible to travel by manipulating momentum as shown in the Effects of Iron Feruchemy thread (more detailed breakdown two posts down from there, and yes, it would work in a vacuum). This could (eventually) get to relativistic speeds, as there would be no air resistance or other forms of drag. If the numbers I made up for calculating the example are correct, the traveller could accelerate at a rate almost 0.75% of light speed per day (0.735%, actually), and (ignoring relativity), reach light speed in 4.5 months.
