He has Allomancy by the time he's on Roshar. He uses bronze to sense tiny Shallan's Investiture.

He does, but Brandon's continued refusal to confirm whether he's ingested the bead is suspicious as hell (and is a major part of why I had this theory in the first place). Even getting asked straight out whether he's ingested it, Brandon won't give a straight answer.

  2. The Denver signing report isn't up yet on Arcanum, but my first question was pursuing my long-time theory about Hoid using the lerasium to rewrite his Spirit Web in ways other than only getting Allomancy. For the first time, though, Brandon seems to have shot it down: he said that while it's possible to alloy lerasium with another god metal and get access to other Invested Arts that way, Hoid has not done that—and that there were several things preventing him from doing so.

Bummer to lose my theory, but now I'm really curious about what might have prevented him.

  3. Ah, excellent. I actually think I've seen this WoB before, now that I read it.

I do think it's no surprise that he wants to be perceived as something else. When he called himself Passion in OB, it reminded me of Ruin's attempt at characterizing himself as passionate in HoA. How else are these overtly "evil" Shards supposed to get otherwise rational/"good" people to go along with them, right?

Edit: Hah, this was from JordanCon. I was in the freaking audience...no clue how I managed to forget this.

As Brandon said he is good at “lying” to himself about what the shard really is.

Wait whoa, do we have a WoB on this? A cursory search of Arcanum doesn't pull anything up, but that would be a really nice thing to have for those arguments of Odium vs. Passion. (I am firmly on the side of "this is the Shard of hate" and Rayse is simply lying to Dalinar in an attempt to seduce him, FWIW.)

Soulcasting does not allow for access to Shadesmar - you're thinking of Elsecalling.

When Shallan soulcasts, she briefly enters Shadesmar. Transformation and Transportation both allow for Shadesmar access, though Transformation's seems to be a limited access. Hoid likely wants to see if he can figure out how to get around those limits.

Honestly, the other possibility is that at some point Brandon hyper-covertly mentioned some as yet unseen Shard and it’s that one that’s the real ‘Trell’. Then it technically wouldn’t be a lie. Off the top of my head, the only thing that I could maybe see as being this is ‘Purity’ (the entirely incongruously named moon in the Roshar system). I could certainly see a Shard of Purity being peeved at Sazed for mixing two different Shards like he did. Either that or maybe ‘Wisdom’, if we interpret what Hoid said in Oathbringer about him and Wisdom ‘not always seeing eye to eye’ (or something to that effect) as him naming ‘Wisdom’ as a Shard.

I doubt this is the case, but I don’t think we can completely rule out the possibility.

Even if Purity is a Shard, which is unlikely, AU came out well after SoS and the WoB that the spike was from a Shard we knew.

  7. I finally got off my butt and got past chapter 1 this week (AoN has been sitting in my files for three years; I started four times over that time and never even got to D'Naa's first POV). I'm glad I did, though, because I'm greatly enjoying this story.

THAT SAID...whoo boy, definitely an early, unpolished work. Some of my favorite recurring things:

    1) "Hoard" instead of "horde"

    2) "Aid" instead of "aide"

    3) Great (awkward) use of "maladroit"

    4) "Distinctified" instead of "distinguished"

    4) But my very favorite: recurring use of "monopolized" where he meant "capitalized"

Any other common typos stand out?

4.) The seventeenth shard is not mentioned in any book I know of, but is in this quote: (spoilered for length)

They're mentioned in Hoid's letter to Frost in WoK. He tells Frost that he should call off his "friends of the Seventeenth Shard" who are following Hoid.

He did, can I have a wob for that?

But Culti could still be a drgaon.

I mean, I don't remember the exact wording. It was like 2 am and, uhhh, I may have had a couple of drinks at that point. But I basically told him I had a wild pet theory, because the Stormfather's face is described as "inhuman" and Tanavast wears gold in Dalinar's vision, that Tanavast was a gold dragon. Brandon just laughed and said he wasn't a dragon.

I'm only against this theory because I want Honor and Cultivation to be dragons, and Larsta isn't really a dragon's name.

Tanavast, at least, was not a dragon. I asked Brandon during the JordanCon Magic tournament, and he was comfortable shooting that one down.

White Sand plays approximately a millennium before MB1, right? That would place Trelligism before it, as White Sand then plays around the time the Lord Ruler came to power.

So this was pre-White Sand discussion online and before we started obsessively recording everything, but I also asked Brandon at the Denver SoS signing whether the Trell in the White Sand prose was involved in the religions on Scadrial, and he said "nice catch." For what that's worth. (Amusingly, I hadn't read SoS yet as that signing was release day, so I had no clue how important Trell would end up being in Era 2. I bet Brandon was snickering internally the whole time I talked to him.)

I know it sucks to have multiple paraphrased WoBs here, but they are pertinent.

    About that ..

So Marsh has the last remaining Atium in the world. And judging from his wobs about Atium is unlikely produced. (I can't find the other wob that explicitly states harmony having no plans to produce Atium as of the moment)

Unless of course that changes in the final wax&Wayne given it is clearly the titular metal.

It won't naturally regenerate, because now we have harmonium. But that extra bit of power is 100% a Chekov's Gun, and more atium is certainly a possibility from that.

Now, the religion of Trell was dualistic, and Miles thinks Trell created the world. This sounds a little like Ruin and Preservation, who did create the world in question.

Trelagism was dualistic; Trellism, as the Era 2 religion, makes no mention of duality.

There's a little possibility, though, that you could be on to something. We know that Ruin and Preservation were imbalanced, due to Preservation putting a bit of himself in humanity. And I swear there's a WoB where Brandon teases us about what Sazed did with that extra bit of Ruin...I just can't find it. I really thought he said "extra bit" but that's not popping up in my Arcanum search. So if that extra bit of Ruin was splintered off and gained sapience over 300 years, it could be going after Harmony.

I do think it's Autonomy, though.

Could Kaladins sergeant be a dragon? Tukks was hus name. I remember him being a wirldhopper suspect a while ago.

Regarding Vessels, we know that there are human Vessels (I believe Rayse, Ati and Leras are all confirmed humans, but I might be wrong), we know at least one Sho Del Vessel, and so it would be wierd if there isn’t one dragon Vessel. Out of the current ones we know, I’d say Edgli and Bavadin are the most likely ones.

Tanavast was not a dragon, we have that much confirmed. I had a crackpot theory that he was a gold dragon, but Brandon shot it down during the Magic tournament at JordanCon this year.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone was nearby recording at the time, but them's the facts. I do like Bavadin as a dragon (or at least nonhuman).

Not strictly Brandon-related, but a lot of people here are also fans of Brandon's old mentor, David Farland, best known for his Runelords books, which Brandon has described as containing the best magic system he's ever seen.

I attended a panel with Brandon on magic systems, and David Farland was there.  Along the way he mentioned that he's going to be coming out with a Runelords prequel series.  This seemed a bit strange to me, as the final book of the main series isn't out yet; it's been MIA for something like 6 years now.  So I caught up to him after the panel and asked about that, and he said that he's had a heck of a time writing it, because of a case of writer's block that went on for years.  But he finally got past that and is finishing it up now, and expects to have it finished within a couple weeks.  His best guess at a publication time is approximately a year from now.

So... yay!  We're finally going to get the conclusion! :D

Nice to get another update! I saw he posted a month or two ago that he was up to 50% on A Tale of Tales, but it's been radio silence ever since. I was getting worried that he hit another block...
