  1. Welcome to the Shard! If you're ever on the lookout for more Jameses, James Islington has some good books out there.
  2. I just had another idea - what if he were Frost or Xisis? He's played a dragon before, after all (Smaug). Problem is we don't know a huge amount about either of them, but if he was one of them I'd lean toward maybe Frost because he seems more awesome. I haven't read Isles of the Emberdark, by the way, so I'm not aware of any appearances that dragons make in that.
  3. That actually makes a ton of sense. Though I've never thought of it before, it does definitely fit (although a carapace-covered Cumberbatch is a sight I never thought I'd see). These are both great ideas! This might be a bit of a stretch, but maybe Sigzil? Then again, there are probably better Sigzils out there. I've also seen him occasionally cast as Ruin, which would be cool.
  4. In that case, you're not missing much of the puzzle at all and I can spoil with impunity. I've heard somewhere that Hoid means to collect every magic system in the Cosmere, but I can't vouch for how accurate that is. On the Coppermind it says that Hoid's quest might be "To make that which once was". To me that sounds like maybe remaking Adonalsium, but this is Brandon Sanderson - obviously it won't be that obvious. As a wise old Sharder often says, "Hope that helps".
  5. As we all know, Brandon Sanderson has partnered with Apple TV to give us a full-fledged Mistborn movie, followed hopefully by a full Cosmere of productions (assuming they stay faithful, of course). There's another topic on here dealing with full casts for the movie, which everyone should check out because it's got a lot of awesome stuff. This topic is much narrower in scope than that one, but it contains a vital, essential, potentially Cosmere-threatening possibility: What role should Benedict Cumberbatch, my personal favorite actor, the glorious Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange, play in the production? Assuming he's cast for it, of course, which is by no means certain. None of this is hard, confirmed info, just so everyone's clear; just my hope-fueled speculation and wishful thinking.
  6. Just wondering, what books have you read? I don't want to spoil you by accident (when talking about Hoid, there's a lot to be spoiled).
  7. Elend, my friend, I hope you've learned your lesson. Try to make that kind of joke here and you won't be reacted to in a normal way; instead, your joke will be ruthlessly analyzed, corrected and discarded by the community. Welcome to the 17th Shard (Can't really be talking, as I'm kind of new here too)
  8. I believe Brandon has stated that the second arc of Stormlight takes place in ten years of their time. This is making the assumption that Kaladin and the Heralds will be present for that, but if so, he certainly won't be stuck for 'thousands of years'. It's an interesting point, though, and ten years is still plenty of time if that's what's going to happen.
  9. Benedict Cumberbatch needs to play something. Maybe the Lord Ruler?
  10. YKYASW you're listening to a religious song and your brain autocorrects "Cause your Word" to "Cosmere WoB".
  11. In the past, it's been theorized that each Shard's Intent is a subset of a Dawnshard's, and that each Shard is associated with a Dawnshard. If that's the case, what do we know about which Shards go with which Dawnshards? Here's what I have. Shards: Devotion Dominion Ruin Preservation Odium Cultivation Honor Endowment Autonomy Ambition Invention Mercy Valor Virtuosity Whimsy Reason Known Dawnshards: Change Exist I'll do Change first, because it seems easier. Change Shards: Cultivation: This one is pretty low-hanging fruit. It's stated in the books that Cultivation only cares about growth, not what something grows into. Cultivation is the most obvious Change Shard that I can think of. Ruin: Also a pretty intuitive one. Ruin's Intent is described as, effectively, entropy: reducing everything into its smallest units. Kind of the opposite of Cultivation, but still Change. Autonomy: Autonomy drives her followers to be independent of each other and unique. The drive for novelty seems to me to be an indicator of Change. I'm not super certain on this one, though. Invention: My last guess. Presumably, Invention's Intent is a drive to create new things out of simpler ones. Seems like it would make a good Change Shard. On to Exist. Exist Shards: Preservation: This Shard places such a large emphasis on Preserving everything. That could be interpreted as a desire that those things continue to exist. Makes sense so far. Reason: Reason is the Shard that - according to Brandon - always wants to hide and survive, preserving its own Existence. Mercy: It's possible that having Mercy on someone could be construed as allowing them to continue to Exist. This is pretty much just conjecture, though. I really don't have any clue as to what else might fit, so if you guys have any thoughts, they would be welcome! On a similar note, what might the Intents of the other two Dawnshards be?
  12. That was me, and I did indeed type up the post, then create an account in order to post it, in that order. I hope that clarifies things!
  13. Oh, my bad, I meant Towerlight.
  14. Another thought (Lost Metal spoilers):
  15. I suppose that's true. My assumption is that (going by Lost Metal pure Investiture rules) the Compounder could power their own Allomancy with pure Investiture, making it incredibly efficient, and then do ordinary Nicrosil things to another Allomancer, but at the more efficient rate. I guess that wouldn't be incredibly overpowered, though. Yeah, I took another look at my post after doing something else for a while and realized how crazy that theory is.
  16. Either there must be some check on the power level or they don't know how to use it. In Bands of Mourning, Khriss mentions that there have been three Crasher Twinborn in the history of post-Catacendric Scadrial. Using that as a guide, there should have been at least one Nicrosil Compounder. So why did that not happen, and have a massive effect on Scadrial? My guess is that, since the Investiture involved is coming from Preservation and Ruin, the effects of Nicrosil Compounding would cause the Compounder to potentially Ascend, in the same way one would upon drawing the mists or burning enough lerasium to become a Savant. Harmony probably knows this, and most likely guides events so that Nicrosil Compounders either are never born, never figure out their powers, or die. That's just speculation at this point, though.
  17. As far as we know, Nicrosil stores Investiture. My theory is that a Nicrosil Twinborn could store Investiture, and then tap that same Investiture in order to power their Allomancy, the same way that (Lost Metal Spoilers) In theory, there's no reason this shouldn't be as powerful as that was. Any thoughts or corrections?
  18. I think you could probably spike the Investiture out of them, but it wouldn't have any 'cracks' to fit into in the Spiritweb of whoever you spiked it into, so it wouldn't work.
  19. WoB Given that he didn't give this an outright No, it's not ruled out as a possibility, I guess? However, I don't find it likely. Presumably it wouldn't be built into the Surgebinding system, as they would never have seen a need for it. There may be a workaround, but again, I find that unlikely.
  20. I don't know if this helps, but: I guess we don't really know much about the Unmaking process, though.
  21. Favorite non-Brandon book? That's a hard one. I love Lord of the Rings, but it's been a long time since I read it through, so I definitely need a reread on that. I also enjoy some science fiction, specifically Isaac Asimov and The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlen. Three Musketeers is another old favorite, and so are some of Hawthorne's stories. Depending on my mood, it could be any of those at any given time, or something else completely. No, I'm aware of no such 'coder box'. Should my ignorance worry me? Although I'm not above the odd cult, I'm not into anime, and I've only had peripheral experience with one webcomic (XKCD). So, no cults for now.
  22. I've seen you a few places.
  23. Oh, a brownie, thank you! *eats* *pause* *horrific screams* If I could get lunch with any Cosmere character, I think it might be Wayne because he's just a fun guy. If I could smack anyone with no consequences? My first thought was Amaram, but then my mind went straight to He Who M***h Not Be Named and stayed there (even though the way I imagine Wax's uncle, he does have a very smackable face). Favorite weapon or offensive magic system? On the one hand, Surgebinding is just so cool, but Allomancy is too. I think maybe Shardplate and Blade might take the win here, though. My answer changes on a day-to-day basis. Hoid is incredible. Hoid is my role model. Everything I do is an attempt to emulate Hoid. I'd like to think I'd take up Reason, but I don't know. If I was in a really bad and/or super dramatic mood I could see myself taking Odium or Ruin. CoderDrag0n8, I know the secrets hidden in the white text. I've been around. Whimsy's color? Maybe a really eye-tearing yellow. Are there croissants on offer? If so I'll take them.
  24. Hello! I've been reading Sanderson for multiple years now, but almost entirely the Cosmere. The only published Cosmere works I can think of off-hand that I've not read are Isles of the Emberdark and White Sands, but I also haven't read anything unpublished. My Realmatic theory is a bit shaky, though, and I almost certainly need a reread of some of the books. I've also read Frugal Wizard and the first 7-ish books of the Wheel of Time. I became aware of the 17th Shard about a year ago, and have been browsing the forums ever since. There's a lot of stuff here, but I have picked up a thing or two (Dark Alley, don't even think about offering me that cookie). Is there anything important I should know?
  25. There is. The Shard of Honor eventually recoalesced into a usable form after being Splintered. In a direct conflict between the two Shards, Retribution would certainly overpower Harmony. However, in some kind of proxy war, it would be fairly easy to force Retribution's hand by placing him in a situation in which the Shard demands that the Vessel act. (On an unrelated note, does anyone play the board game Root? It's just that Retribution's nature reminds me of a mechanic from that game.)
