  1. This is an assumption based upon an assumption. While the cryptic (symbolhead) does grant Shallan access to Shadesmar where she interacts with the cognitive aspect of the goblet (leading to the transformation to blood), there is no evidence beyond this that the cryptic facilitates the soulcasting in any other fashion. The cryptic is conspicuously absent from Shadesmar. This leads me to believe that the cryptic is not involved in Shallan's soulcasting. By extension, I don't think that Elhokar is a soulcaster. He appear to have, in my view, a greater sensitivity to the cryptics since he can visibly see them, albeit in mirrors, while Shallan can only sense them, presently, by way of her drawing ability (as well as being able to hear in her mind their communication with her).
  2. That is the rub. Since we are talking about draining apparent color from objects, then we are talking about reflected light. So, essentially, the awakener is causing the object drained of color to reflect a far broader spectrum of light. Although, black (true black pigment) absorbs the full spectrum of visible light. So, when turning something gray...?
  3. Your theory has a lot of merit to it and I suspect that the basic idea of it will prove close to accurate. I think that the "big piece" that Brandon referred to is going to involve the Southern continent use of the systems. I think will enable the rapid on/off mechanism as well as address some of the metal intensive aspects. It is a good theory though. It just has a substantial weakness given the information (or lack thereof) that we have now.
  4. I think you may be reading real world cultures you associate Terris with, into the Terris culture (if that makes any sense). Yes, keepers would go into a trancelike state when filling multiple metalminds. But, we have very little info, that I can recall, about Terris culture, pre- or post-ascension. And I suspect that pre-ascension Terris culture bears very little resemblance to post-ascension (at least at the time of TFE) Terris culture.
  5. Wow, that's some crazy ninja action. She sorta alterered the meaning of your post before you even posted. M'ich has some crazy powers .
  6. Ok, adding cadmium bubbles factors strongly into item 4). I'm not sure I made it clear what I was saying. Ok, for starters lets look at velocity. Just as a bit of flavor I note that the space shuttle in orbit over Earth travels at approximately 50 miles per second. Now, we are talking about bringing our ship to a greater velocity than that, neh? I believe you said "First, accelerate the ship to as close to light speed as you can manage". So, we are moving through space at a nightmarishly quick pace. This means when a bendalloy bubble is put up, this is the velocity of the ship as it travels through the space contained the bendalloy bubble which is anchored at a fixed point in space. This means that, even with a freakishly enormous sized bubble, the ship will traverse this space in an eye-blink. You may protest, "But the ship will be in a cadmium bubble so the time passes slower in the ship". Yes, this is true. However, the cadmium bubble is anchored to the ship. So, while time is meandering in the ship, the cadmium bubble containing the ship is still traversing the space within the bendalloy bubble as freakishly fast as the ship would be without the cadmium bubble. This means that multiple bendalloy bubbles would have to successively created within each second. Now, to compound that, we have the cadmium bubble(s) surrounding the ship. This means that 1 second of time withing the ship is now 100, 1000, 1,000,000 seconds, or whatever multiplier, outside the cadmium bubble. This means that you now need to apply that same multiplier to the number of bubbles which must be successively created each sec. This is, in my opinion, the key and biggest problem with this theory. As a distant second place, that is a staggeringly massive amount of metal to be gathered for a single trip. Consider that it has been estimated the entire amount of gold ever mined on the Earth would fit into a cube 60 feet on a side. I don't know how prevalent cadmium is on Scadrial. But, gathering that much of an any alloy, except perhaps steel, would be an enormously extravagant undertaking. The overlap thing is negligible since we don't know what the effect would be. We can surmise, but we don't know. Assumptions are assumptions and theories rise and fall on assumptions. So for our purposes, let's take it as read that you can choose the anchor for your bubble.
  7. Ok Kurk, you asked me to read it and give my reasons as to why I think there may be problems. In order to alleviate some of the wet blanketness that this post may be, let me preface by saying that this is very clever. i like the thought you put into it. However on a not crazy in-depth study of this, I have 4 initial concerns. 1) As Isomere pointed out above, it seems to me that a duralumin/nicro enhanced bendalloy bubble would also have an increased time compression relative to a standard bubble. That being the case, there would remain a (substantial?) passage of time for the ship and the crew since the cadmium bubble would then only decrease the time differential between the ship and Scadrial. Now, if you wanted to account for this, I suppose you could have cadmium burners who are weaker than your bendalloy burners and duralumin/nicro them as well. Then their bubbles would still be smaller than the bendalloy, but this would decrease the time differential to more negligable amounts. Might have a problem with bubble bumping though and you cadmium and bendalloy bubbles would overlap inevitably. 2) That is a great big fat assumption to say that the frame of reference for the bubble (i.e., anchored in a fixed location in space or on a moving object). 3) This method seems to be incredibly metal intensive, you would be burning through bendalloy like a madman. How would you keep your misting supplied. 4) This is somewhat supplementary to reason 3). You would have to be constantly putting up and popping bubbles in rapid succession and constantly to maintain the effect. This would require intense coordination between your sliders and the enhancers as well as some means of providing a constant feed of metals to at least your sliders. There are perhaps some work-arounds. But, Sheesh! the logistics are intense. So there is the initial volley. You may have thought of these things and have ready answers. I may have misunderstood some aspects which may nullify these rationale. But there it is, IMHO.
  8. Attaining the tenth heightening so you can awaken using your dingy and stained whites in order to make them beautifully white and remove those stubborn stains. Edit: spelling.
  9. I'm not saying it would make a massive difference in the power of the awakening. But, I do think that it would make a noticeable difference. Otherwise, so what if it turns it white. Great for getting out those hard to remove stains? It would be nothing more than a novelty if it had no effect on the awakening. Edit: that gives me an idea for a useless use for a useful power.
  10. Methinkst he was jesting. Although an emoticon would not have hurt to make this clear.
  11. My spidey sense would be surprised if she doesn't already have it. I think she likes it and wants to see more and to talk about it.
  12. The only thing that is not consistent is that, moving away from the epicenter you should see plateaus getting much larger and the chasms being smaller and spread further apart. However, we see small chasms and smaller (generally) plateaus near the warcamps. So, if the drawing is scripture and binding for physics et al., then neither model really holds up.
  13. It was my understanding (I have only read Warbreaker once, several years ago) that color drained=awakening fuel. Ergo, more color drained=more awakening fuel.
  14. That is true that speciallization is valuable thing in most skill sets. But most skill sets consist of much more substance than rithmatics. Think about it, there are four basic rithmatic lines: Warding, forbiddance, making, and vigor. They all need a certain level of skill to draw effectively. However, rithmatists have about 10 years of education to learn rithmatics. Now, think about your own education, for a bachelor's degree you have 2-3 years of specialized education (most degree specific course-work occupies this amount of time). With 10 years of speciallized education, you could earn a bachelors, masters, and PhD in a specific field. It seems that learning the mechanics of rithmatics (effective line drawing) occupies roughly the first 6-8 years of rithmatic education while the reamining time is spent on strategy, theory, and some level of practicum. (Yes, I know rithmatists take other classes as well. But you can bet that they are not going to force those classes at the expense of rithmatic education. Rithmatists are just too important in their society.) At some point in time in this education you are going to attain something in the ballbark of the maximum of your ability with actual line construction (lines of making would be something of an exception to this perhaps). The bulk of the rest of your education and your continued learning beyond is going to be development of your skill at using the lines effectively. Even though lines of making are likely more complex than the other lines, recall that Melody has unheard of control over her chalklings and they are wicked powerful. This is a huge part of Joel's and Melody's success. Of the skill sets, Joel's is going to be the easiest to replicate through practice and experience. However, nobody would be able to even begin to try to replicate Melody's ability. It seems much much more than a paradigm shift. She has a powerful gift with chalklings that nobody else seems to share.
  15. I know, I know. But I am curmudgeonly proud my non-presence on social media. This forum is really, my only online contribution for the last 15-ish years.
  16. Alas, I am twittilliterate. I am not even on facebook. Grumble, grumble, social media, grumble, gag. I'll let it ride a week. Then, I guess I'll start a twitter account , if I have to.
  17. Alright, I just purchased my membership to SpoCon. I'll be there on Friday afternoon/evening and I'll be at the reading at 5 PM. We got it worked out. My daughter's birthday party will be on Sat. night to accommodate other family schedules and my wife is taking her shopping on Fri. So, I'm in and nothing got shifted for the purpose of me going to the con. So I am totally in the clear. Edit: I am still waiting to hear back from BS to see if he will be having a booth at the con or some other means of having a Q&A with him.
  18. It certainly shouldn't be until after you and Windy surpass the new level . Unless of course you just want to experience the joy twice .
  19. Not quite accurate aero, this quote http://theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=727#22'>here suggests otherwise. There appears to be not only an acceleration and condensing of the burn, but also an enhancement in the power resulting from the burn. No matter how much atium you burn on its own, it only shows a few moments into the future. But Elend's duralumin enhanced atium burn showed much much more. Likewise, even when flaring pewter and pushing against an absolutely fixed anchor, without duralumin, Vin could never have tossed a dozen or so horses and riders with a steelpush no matter how high she flared it. Since a duralumin enanced atium burn has such profound effects, I would expect that a duralumin enhanced lerasium burn would have similarly profound effects.
  20. Depends on how big your bubble is, how many guys you're up against, etc. What it does allow for is precision strikes against multiple enemies in a very brief amount of real-time. Especially in a crowd. If you were to toss out an arc of metal pieces and make a general push, you would hit a lot of innocents. If you were to strike at each enemy individully, it would take up a lot of time and you would have to be very aware of your enemies' attacks. But, if you toss out an arc of metal and put up a bubble after the pieces pass out of the would-be bubbles diameter and individually select an advantageous piece of metal to selectively push on to hit a particular enemy, then, you could hit multiple enemies, very precisely, in a crowd of innocents with few, if any, innocents being harmed. Sounds like a nice advantage to me. Edit: killed the repeated 'a'. I am kinda anal about typos in my posts.
  21. Give some examples of how you think it could prove beneficial outside of those I have provided. I am interested to know your thoughts. That's just the way I see it. There very well may be other paradigms and circumstances which I haven't even considered.
  22. It has been too long since I read A Wrinkle in Time et al. (25 years?). So I am not familiar enough anymore with the tesseract concepts she writes. It's hard for me to say really when my mind gets so bogged down with relativity. Sometimes it is hard to mentally step outside that. Personally, the FTL workaround that I like best is foldspace travel from Dune.
  23. I would expect that the ability to drain to white would result in a greater amount of fuel for the investiture than a drain to grey. Thus, 10th heightening awakenings would be more potent than other awakenings. Also, as has been put forth previously, I would expect that a 10th heightening awakener could produce some degree of awakening using an object that has been previously drained to grey by another awakener. Thus giving the 10th heightening awakener more ammunition as it were.
  24. No, don't apologize Aero. You're fine. I personally don't see time travel, which you reported to be your original intent in the post. But, I'd be interested in your underlying thoughts as to why that effect would be present/possible. As to the acceleration, in HoA, during the big inquisitor throwdown, I did not get the impression that there was a whole lot of acceleration/deceleration involved. I could be entirely wrong, but that was just my impression. Edit: my previous post was a general vent, not a directed one.
  25. He wouldn't technically be a proper mistborn. Besides, I doubt he is going to go all serial killer. Edit: ninja'd by Windborn.
