I WATCHED IT A FEW DAYS AGO OMG
it made me cry so much
especially one of the last episode, I forget which.
spoilers
the one where the dying mom wrote letters to her daughter to be read as she got older.
also the one with the dying soldier sending a letter to his parents and crush, though less so.
the whole thing was amazing. I just randomly found it on netflix and it looked cool so i binged it in 2 days and it was amazing
Sometimes random Netflix finds are gems. Still remember seeing Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai while scrolling and thinking WTF? And then I watched it and it's not at all what you'd expect.
The first two and last two episodes of Violet were less emotional for me, as those were more about setup and series payoff, but every episode in between had actual tears rolling down my cheeks.
Now, to watch the movies...
SpoilerSee, I was warned that episode 10 was an emotional nuke, but I didn't know what exactly that meant (I was bracing for something horrific and/or violent--thankfully it wasn't) and it still got me good. Definitely one of the most beautiful episodes of television I've seen.
Nobody warned me about episode 11, though, so I carried on and got destroyed all over again.
ETA: Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't shout out KyoAni's gorgeous animation and Evan Call's excellent work on the score.

This is your sign to watch Violet Evergarden if you haven’t already.
No (non-religious) piece of media has made me cry like this. What the storms.

I'm developing an ever-increasing appreciation for Kasane Teto.
SpoilerClassic song. Love this version.
YouTube Recommended gem. The janky OG voice gives it charm.
I really like what KØTA's doing with Teto. The above two are just my favorites; go check out the rest of his stuff!
And finally, one of my favorite Yorushika songs:

Hey, this is pretty good!
I really enjoyed reading this. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Why, thank you. Hopefully it won't be *checks notes* two years before the next entry.

Narrator: There was not, in fact, a bounteous harvest.
In any case, progress is occurring. Just, not as fast as I'd like. Here's the prologue to my current project (the same one the earlier chapter is from). Presently working on more scenes, now that I have a much stronger idea as to where this is all headed, and I'll probably take a break later to start fleshing out some of the projects I've started but left by the wayside.
SpoilerThe air in the workshop was wet and heavy with the fruits of secret labor. Each window was boarded up, cracks sealed with putty, and the door had five unique locks in addition to the heavy beam laid across it.
William de Witt leaned over his bench, carefully braiding the wire around the corner of a large, wooden frame. It was amazing stuff, this metal of the gods, more so than anyone could have imagined—well, mostly anyone. William was often unsure if he was racing other inventors, or merely his own imagination. Regardless, he allowed that urgency to propel him forward.
He spared a glance at the bulb on the wall above him. In stark contrast to the faltering incandescent bulbs in the ceiling, this one glowed cool and even. It bathed his workstation in a faux sunlight, the physical manifestation of all his theories, his hard work and patience.
A remarkable substance indeed. Let Edison eat his heart out.
With bleeding fingers, William braided the final inches of wire into place. His heart was racing in a way it hadn’t since his first discovery a year ago. He attached leads to each end of the massive coil, then threw the switch. Every lightbulb in the building at once went out, not that you’d have known it. The daylight streaming in through the doorway in front of him more than compensated.
It was much as he’d seen it those many years ago, though he had a better view of it now. The gentle susurration of the trees was in the distance, and he could feel the chill air wash over him, adding to the gooseflesh he already had.
He’d done it. He’d really done it!
They’ll want to know, he thought, eyes twitching to the telephone on his bench. They wanted this nearly as much as I did. But no. That meant debriefs and paperwork and delays in the work.
Thus resolved, he set such thoughts aside and stepped forward into heaven.
A sallow, wide-eyed man in a trench coat watched William disappear from view. By the hearth he lurked, hands at his side, patient and still. Finally, he stepped forward toward the workbench. He lifted the telephone receiver, worked the dial, and stood straight. He betrayed no indication whether anybody had answered him on the other end, except—
“Yes.”
…
“He has.”
The man turned and stared at the portal. It had been flickering, and presently it began to fade. Its last light reflected in the man’s eyes and then it was gone.
“Fifty seconds.”
There was a click, then silence.

Lloyd Newell is, if I recall correctly, currently serving as a mission president.

Apologetics and discussions with people that missionaries are teaching. Some great methods of arguing intellectually. It’s mainly a YT thing. Also look up the Missionary Brief, a different sort of teaching video tool for those wanting to understand more. The guy (Travis) is LDS and through the videos he references a lot of fantastic sources you can look into if you’re interested.
This. The one point against him, imo, is that he can be a little...ah, blunt? I blame the lawyer training. But it's often just as gratifying as it is grating, when he doesn't take the crap from a clearly bad-faith actor.

Biblical inerrancy and sola scriptura stuff drives me crazy.
Same.
Actually, on this topic, anyone here familiar with the channel Missionary Discussions?

The ancient Apostles. He was trying to say the Church was false for rejecting the Trinity, so I brought out John 17:20-22 were Jesus prayed that the Apostles would be One, just as He is One with the Father.
My dear basher either had to reject the Trinity or accept the Apostles as all being one person. I was not prepared for his answer.
Oh my.
9 minutes ago, Lord Gregorio said:I had a similar thing where a dude straight up said Jesus was the Bible because of John 1:1.
I've seen that one a few times, actually. Maybe not that exact argument--it's usually used as a point in favor of biblical inerrancy. I certainly don't read it that way, but I'm too damnably inarticulate to really explain it.

Lol, the bashers are so funny.
My favorite was probably the guy who tried to tell me the Apostles are all the same person.
That's a new one.
The ancient apostles, or the current ones?

Yep, that one too. Never mind that it wasn't actually written last. And what plagues? Last I checked, we were doing pretty well.
But seriously, I am genuinely baffled that anyone still uses 2 Nephi against us. It tells me immediately that they don't take us remotely seriously and probably got a list of talking points from a book or their pastor. It can lead to a genuine and interesting discussion if they're open to it, but we're not off to a great start.

Lookin' at you, Galatians 1:8 and 2 Nephi 25:23.

Steins;Gate is a storming masterpiece.
It absolutely stuck the landing. My favorite show remains my favorite show, hooray! And Makise Kurisu is a generational Best Girl.
Now for Steins;Gate 0. And I’ll probably want to read the VN too.

“His being a Latter-day Saint” works just fine. It’s the name of the Church itself that ought not to be abbreviated.

I think I might've ruined or degraded it like a coppermind by listening to it on repeat (along with the whole soundtrack) for days a few times

Random thought in my head:
canonically rosharians are taller than the people on Scadrial.
At some point these people will interact.
In order to keep fans happy, the same actors will have to be used across all movies for a character.
so… how are they going to manage that? Get exclusively people from Arabian peninsula over 6 5’ for stormlight? And then cast only people under 6ft or something for every single other movie/TV show?
John Rhys-Davies is very tall. Gimli is not. No CGI was used when filming Frodo and Gandalf together. Filmmakers can be very, very clever.

Forgive me for being a little late to the discussion, but I'd like to chime in with some thoughts of my own.
Of course, as has already been well-established, Your Name is amazing, especially in regards to its soundtrack, which is to this day one of the few I'll listen to outside of the film. (Sparkle is my favorite, and is dear enough to me that I actually try to avoid listening to it regularly so that I don't ruin it for myself.) Shinkai's next films still rank as some of my favorites, even if they don't hit quite the same as Your Name.
@Theory, if you haven't already, I also recommend Garden of Words. It's much shorter, ~45 mins, but is in every other respect equal to Shinkai's other work. (It was actually my introduction to him, via an AMV somebody made from it and one of my favorite songs.) Also, if/when you do, see if you can spot the characters from Garden in Your Name. (The Your Name cast also makes an appearance in Weathering With You!)
Also, regarding anime music, that's honestly half the reason I like anime so much.
I can second most recommendations already brought forward, and I'll add one of my own: Sunny by Yorushika. Actually, I'll just recommend Yorushika full-stop: they're one of my favorite bands in general, not just in Japanese. I was a fan well before Frieren aired and was delighted to discover that Sunny was used as one of the openings. I could go on about anime music, but maybe I'll save that for later. I've been meaning to make a playlist of my favorites for a while, anyways.
(One last thing--Steins;Gate slaps. It's an all-timer for me and I haven't even finished it yet.)
---
In other news, I finally got around to watching Bocchi the Rock! and I don't know why it took me so long. It's exactly as good as I'd heard--better, even. 10/10, no notes, and I'm entirely smitten with Seika.

Heck yeah

Every once in a while the YouTube algorithm absolutely hits it out of the park.
@Edema Rue I can't put my finger on why, but I think you'd like this one. Hope I'm not wrong!
And I've been craving an ambient album like this for a while, I think. This is my favorite kind of film score.

President Holland has passed away.
I'm not surprised, really--he was pretty clear himself that his time was fast approaching, and I'm happy he can be with his wife now. But he was one of the best, and the church just isn't the same without him.

Our Christmas program today included “Fix You” by Coldplay. (Plenty of other beautiful music as well—I always love to hear “In the Bleak Midwinter”—but this was the most notable.)
