I have an old theory that Dawnshards are magical musical instruments. To answer your question, here's what we know about the Dawnshards: They can "bind any creature, voidish or mortal" (this is from the Poem of Ista) They disappeared some time before Tanavast recorded his "journal" Tanavast believes that they would have been a great help in fighting Odium As for the Dawnsingers, Kabsal believes they are a type of spren. Given that the Ghostbloods seem to know a lot of important secrets, he might be correct about that. But we're not sure.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. If you're correct, then maybe that's why Bondsmiths have the ability to affect the bonds of other men. I still don't know what the spren of storms (Stormfather) has to do with Sinew, though.

I have a pretty old thread about the relationship between KR spren, the Essences, and the Orders. I updated the thread's OP recently to reflect the info we've gotten from WoR, though the Stormfather is currently giving me trouble. He is the spren of the Sinew Order of Bondsmiths, but he doesn't seem to even appear to be made of sinew/flesh. Though I suppose a fleshy-looking spren would look kind of weird.

@Odeis: Well, I did list down some limitations of Single-Breath Wand-based Awakening in the OP, and I can think of a few more: A person with tons of Breath is only limited by the number of Commands he knows that require less Breath than what he has (which, for people with thousands of Breaths, might practically be limitless). A single-Breath person relying on multiple Wands will be limited by the number of Wands he can carry. (Edit: Voidus already pointed this out above.) A person with tons of Breath can use multiple Commands in quick succession. A single-Breath person will have to retrieve his Breath every time before moving on to the next Command. Single-Breath people can't even make Lifeless without turning into drabs. Single-Breath people don't even have access to the First Heightening. That sucks. Anyway, as Voidus said, the power or complexity of the Command does not necessarily have to do with the number of Breaths that will be used. This is the Law of Comparability that Vasher talked about (which I also mentioned in the OP). Edit: By the way, Odeis, I'm pretty sure I am not as confident about this theory as you seem to think, by your "it's... not based as solidly as you're making it seem" comment. Perhaps my way of defending it makes me seem convinced about this theory. I am not. I am just giving this admittedly strange idea a chance, because I want to see if it will survive intense scrutiny. Please continue looking for holes. Thanks!

Members! When you find a theory that you like and that can be useful in Investiture technology, please link to it here and inform the rest of us. It doesn't have to be the OP of a thread in one of the designated theory forums. If someone thinks up of a novel use for fabrials in the RPG forum (which I rarely visit), share it here. If you found Cosmeric engineering genius in an off-topic comment inexplicably made in a discussion about the many virtues of Twilight Sparkle, share it here (the Cosmeric comment, not the virtues of Twilight Sparkle... though her voice actress is pretty hot ). Got it? Good. Lindel already mentioned Chaos' mist fabrial theory. I suggest you read the discussion in that thread. It's pretty interesting. Here are my own theory posts related to Investiture technology: Metals are Investiture resonators (A sort of generalized theory encompassing my Stormlight Pattern and Awakener Wand theories) Stormlight patterns can be imprinted on metal (a.k.a. The use of metal in fabrials) Southern Scadrians use harmonium in their Metallurgic technology (which I actually mentioned in Chaos' thread, long before harmonium was announced) Metals can be used as Command resonators (a.k.a. "Awakener Wands") As you can see, most of the Investiture technology posts shared so far have to do with metal (well, I am Scadrian, after all...). If you found something that's different in that regard, well and good. It doesn't matter what the theory is or where you found it. What matters is that you like it, and that you share it with your brothers and sisters in scholarship here. That is all. Good day. Edit: Of course, it goes without saying that you may share your own theories. -
Yes. A Wand is supposed to replicate what a Command does. That was kind of the point, Odeis. Because the wand has a memory/attunement/alignment of the multiple Breaths that once passed through with the Intent of a Command. The initial (and successful) Command resonates within the wand, allowing it to shape any subsequent Investiture that passes through it. I believe that if you try to use a Command that normally requires more Breath than you currently have, your Breath doesn't get transferred at all, so there is nothing for that Command to shape with its Intent. Please tell me if there is anything in the book that refutes that belief. Anyway, by using "My life to yours, my Breath become yours", we are basically working around that limitation, moving the Breath so that it can be shaped with Intent (in this case, by the wand). Again, this is all completely speculative. It may very well be that the Law of BioChromatic Parallelism will make Wands impossible. But I feel that Law only talks of the difficulty of Awakening things that aren't close to living things with one Breath, not necessarily the impossibility thereof. But please feel free to continue with your rebuttals. Perhaps you can convince me to give this theory up.

Good point, Djerf. If I may add to this new discussion, I've always thought that BioChroma uses a subtractive color system (black=all colors; white=none) while Stormlight uses an additive color system (white=all colors; black=none), simply because natural colorants (e.g. dyes made from plants) are subtractive while light itself is additive. So while Nalthians don't consider white as a color, Rosharians probably do.

Actually, it hinges on my Investiture resonance in metal theory. The thing about Divine Breaths is just to show an example of generic Nalthian Investiture transfer ("My life to yours, my Breath become yours") with pre-existing Intent. I could have opted not to mention Divine Breaths at all, so I don't see why you think my theory hinges on that example. I'm certainly not claiming that Divine Breath wands are possible, if that's what you thought. That's a peculiar interpretation of my words, Odeis. Endowment Invested the Returned with big chunks of his own power, creating Splinters of himself in the process. Clearly the Splinters are special. The Divine Breath can be as complex as Brandon wants them to be. I simply pointed out that they seem to have a healing Intent. That's just one property I choose to describe. I did not claim it was their only property.

I'd prefer to see more evidence (hopefully in Shadows of Self) that my harmonium theory is even close to the truth before I develop it further. I'll post a thread in the Mistborn forum once I have an answer to your questions. I might also post preliminary thoughts on these things in my Coppermind user page. I'll PM you a link later if you're interested. -
It would depend on whether the Third Heightening makes people immune to tricks of light, I guess. For those who haven't figured it out yet, here is the obligatory XKCD comic shedding a bit of light (pun intended!) on the issue. There's also an informative discussion going on in the XKCD forums.

I'll try to meet with you half way and acknowledge that "graft" is a more useful term than "connect" because it specifies the kind of connection intended.

Those are two ways to say the same thing, Kurk. If I were to read a list of instructions that says "Step 1: Graft X to Y; Step 2: Connect X to Y," I'd be baffled, because Step 2 would appear to be the same instruction as Step 1.

Or you could say it's connected to an internal power source.Re:obfuscating semantics, I sort of resent that, Kurk. I thought the OP's message was pretty reasonable and clear, and his use of the word "connection" was pretty valid. You, on the other hand, seem to have an objection to this word, and this objection seems to rest on a rather limiting mental model that you conceived. But hey, we don't know how Brandon himself thinks. Perhaps in the end you might turn out to be right. I guess we'll see eventually.

An integration is a form of connection, Kurk. Connection is relationship, and even a compositional relationship (X contains Y) is still a connection. It's like how the heart pumping blood inside you is connected to you in a very real and very important way, and you certainly don't want it to be "disconnected". Besides, Breath can be given away. It's obviously not something inseparable (either literally or metaphorically) from the person holding it. Edit: Also, why phrase it as "mere connection"?

Good point. But I guess what I was trying to say was that since Brandon hadn't canonized time bubble anchoring until relatively recently (because he interpreted the issue differently in a past interview), he probably wasn't thinking specifically about time bubbles when he first envisioned FTL technology for Scadrians.
-
This makes me think that time bubbles isn't the key to Scadrian FTL technology because it appears (at least to me) that the time bubble anchoring issue will ultimately be a PAFO thing, and I feel that whatever the key is, its behavior in relation to moving objects ought to have been perfectly clear in Brandon's mind very early on.So, I guess it's back to the drawing board.

So guys, what are your favorite theories or theory threads related to Investiture technology? I may have missed some cool stuff in the past, so please share them. Who knows, maybe some long-forgotten thought or idea would end up inspiring some of us in our own theorycrafting. -
I think what Brandon was saying was that Breaths contain an ideal of endowment that is inherent to them, being small pieces ("shades") of the Shard personifying endowment. He didn't say they don't grant a Spiritual Connection to the Shard Endowment. In fact, I think it makes sense that the more Breaths one has, the more he shares in Endowment's divinity, the stronger his Spiritual Connection would be to Endowment. And this Connection is transferred every time you transfer Breath. @Shardcellist: Great job! I think this is a reasonable analysis of the concept of Connection in a Cosmeric context. I hope to see more from you in the future. (Edit: Whoops, you've apparently been a Sharder for some months now. I mistook you for a newbie. Sorry.) Also, I think Kurk's editorial suggestions are valuable and are worthy of consideration.

Imagine if Nightblood transformed things to blood instead of smoke. *shudders*Sorry for being off-topic, but that was the imagery I thought of when I read your reply. Also, Soulcasters would be very effective at this kind of fear tactics.
-
Nuke him from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
-
I'm pretty sure a tinmind costs a lot cheaper than a scope. But maybe a sufficiently advanced scope would be worth it. Maybe. I guess I'm just irrationally distrustful of any type of luck magic. Also, that command fire thing sounds awful. I mean, what's the point of such overkill?
-
It makes sense, but we don't know. You could include that in our ever-growing list of stuff to ask Brandon or make a thread about it in the Stormlight Archive forum.
-
I know. What I meant was I want to see Scadrians experimenting with other atium alloys.
-
Thanks for the input, Nymp! One thing I need to clarify is that the concept I envisioned isn't "Awakened wands", since we're not Awakening the metal but rather letting the Breaths pass through it. Yes, the result does act as a "tuning fork" for Investiture. I imagine that creating an Awakener Wand for a particular Command (e.g. "Fetch keys") only requires the same amount of Breath usually needed by the Command (in the case of "Fetch keys", around twenty five Breaths). There shouldn't be any wasted Breaths, if my assumptions are correct.
