  1. Nice. I'd love to read that deleted scene. Do you have a link? Yeah, Jasnah implies that the generic term for spren that are of Odium is voidspren. Odiumspren is probably a specific species of voidspren. It's also like how Cultivation-based spren are called naturespren and there's a specific species called cultivationspren (of which Wyndle is one). Honor-based spren are emotionspren and, as you said, Syl in particular is honorspren. Of course, there are spren that are mixtures, so it gets more complex.
  2. While we should acknowledge that the unpublished works are not canon, I think it's okay for people to theorize based on anything Cosmere that Brandon wrote, as long as they don't use unpublished works to put down other people's theories. If certain elements from Liar of Partinel or Aether of Night turn out to no longer exist and that the theories based on them are wrong, as someone with lots of wrong Cosmere theories I can truthfully say that it's okay and that it's not the end of the world. But if those elements turn out to still be important, well, wouldn't that be awesome?
  3. Just last week I saw news about November snow in Tokyo. That was supposed to be a big deal because it hasn't happened in like half a century. I hope it would still be snowing next week.
  4. Correct. Here is that WoB: I don't really have anything else to comment about @Amanuensis's theory (that the others haven't already mentioned) except to say that the main idea is plausible. Have an upvote!
  5. According to a very new WoB, people who've been using time bubbles for very long are able to anchor the bubbles to themselves. Of course, Hoid could simply include the greatshell in his time dilation. At least he'd be helping others by keeping the beast in stasis for a while. By the way, I only used the Cadmium Allomancer as an example. I do not assume that Hoid is limited to that particular manifestation of time dilation powers. For all we know, what he does with time dilation could be more flexible than Cadmium Allomancy.
  6. Non-serious answer: Maybe if we take away the dangers of drowning in stomach acid and being slowly metabolized (and obviously Hoid has ways around that), being inside a greashell stomach can be quite a cozy place to be. Semi-serious answer: Hoid can know where he needs to be and when he needs to be there (apparently through Feruchemy). He can also use time dilation abilities to jump forward in time. Maybe whenever he wants to move on to his next adventure on Roshar, he simply uses his time dilation powers to skip the wait and move straight to the correct point in time. Now, someone from Scadrial has something to say about time dilation powers: Alloy of Law Spoilers: Perhaps Hoid wisely wants to avoid being seen while he's using time dilation, and so prefers doing it inside terrifying giant monsters that nobody wants to mess with.
  7. Thanks! I should probably make a new thread for winter suggestions. Anyway, I can't wait to eat Japanese street food and visit Akihabara, Odaiba, and the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo. Even if Japanese winter kills me, I shall die happy amongst Pokemon plushies, authentic takoyaki, anime figures, and Gundam RG 1/1 RX-78-2 Ver. GFT.
  8. I'm going to Japan next week! Woohoo! This will be the first time I'll be outside of my country (though not my first plane ride). This was my sister's idea. Me, her, and our parents will be flying to Tokyo on a four day vacation. I'm still not sure it's wise to go there during winter (us tropical country folks are not used to really cold climate), but perhaps seeing snow for the first time will be worth it. So, how do you four-season people survive winter, anyway? I already have a couple of really warm jackets and I plan to buy some "HeatTech" clothing and some gloves this weekend. How many layers of clothing should I wear? Do I need to know how to make fire? Just kidding... though I hear Japanese houses have plenty of burnable materials.
  9. Reminds me of what Hoid said in Warbreaker (Chapter Thirty Two):
  10. This is just a minor bit of speculation that barely has anything to do with the plot. I only wanted to have this idea written down for future reference. Earlier today I rediscovered this line from the Warbreaker Annotations: Now, as you guys know, having different names is quite common for popular beings on Nalthis. Vasher himself has at least seven different names (not including his pre-Returned name, which has not yet been revealed). In fact, the title of the book itself, "Warbreaker", is one of his names, and this fact was one of the final revelations of the book. The reader basically does not know what the book's title referred to until the book's epilogue. I'm nearing the point of this post. We know that Brandon will name the Warbreaker sequel after another character: Nightblood. In fact, "Nightblood" is its current working title. But given that Nightblood (the sword) had a different name before that tragic homicide so long ago, wouldn't it be cool if Brandon published the sequel under a different name, specifically, Nightblood's original name (whatever it is)? I think it would be incredibly funny if Brandon suddenly uploads an e-book with a title we've never heard of before, then people start reading it and realize it's the Warbreaker sequel. Then they read and read but couldn't figure out what the title referred to until they reach epilogue, where Nightblood starts calling himself by his original name. That would be awesome. Edit: I couldn't help but to speculate about the name. I feel that Talaxin, despite his grief, would not bother renaming Shashara's sword unless its name has become grossly inappropriate once its terrible nature was revealed. So the name must either be quite positive, like something related to justice (e.g. "Lawsteel") or it could refer to a physical trait (e.g. color) that somehow changed after Shashara used it in the Battle of Twilight Falls, so something like "Silverbreath" if Nightblood wasn't originally black but was rather silver-colored like its sheath.
  11. Well, if you insist. Here's another one: Is "Drominad" the name of the star/sun in the Drominad System? I had been wondering why Mashe was the only sun that was given a name in AU. I wish we had more star names in the star chart.
  12. As seen on this thread, some people think the third great domain is Elantris, or the Ire. I think it's on a continent we haven't seen before. Might be worthwhile to ask.
  13. Here's another question based on something from Arcanum Unbounded: Khriss talks of the three great domains on Sel. Is there a third empire and a third continent we haven't seen yet?
  14. He reminded me of Ym, with his "everyone is part of a whole" philosophy. For a while there I thought Ym somehow resurrected or was somehow reanimated. Wyndle referencing Ym earlier (as "the cobbler" he was almost bonded to) might have influenced my thoughts. But I guess seeing a Dysian Aimian kill a couple of murderous Skybreakers was okay, too.
  15. As a matter of fact, we already have an official term for spren that aren't emotionspren or voidspren. In WoR, Jasnah used "naturespren". Maybe "elementalspren" is supposed to include voidish naturespren or something. Well, it is just a paraphrased WoB, after all.
  16. On the Internet, nobody knows you're Bavadin.
  17. I know BlackYeti brought up the chronology (apparently in support for my theory; thanks man!) but it really has nothing to do with my arguments. Let me repeat myself once more (I've said this in replies to @Yata and @Ookla the Sunrise Watcher above): Elantris becoming an empire in the future would not make it the third great domain that Khriss spoke of. As for the Ire... well, okay. Depending on what Wyrn knows of the Ire and how big its Cognitive Realm domain is, I guess it could be the third great domain. The Ire theory might even answer my argument regarding the "sweeping oceans" line since the Ire is located on the Cognitive aspect of what is possibly Selish ocean. I'll think about it.
  18. *fixes post* Is that better? Anyway, maybe it's because Brandon was thinking of Bavadin's Sand Lord persona at the time since that's one god his main character for White Sand has heard of. Maybe Khriss is more familiar with one of Bavadin's goddess personas so she naturally uses the female pronoun for the Shard.
  19. Here's another thing. Again let me quote part of what I've already quoted above: Why would Khriss mention the sweeping oceans in the context of the planet facilitating the relative ignorance of the great domains from each other if none of the great domains are separated by an ocean? Remember, Opelon and the continent above it are separated only by a sea, hardly the "sweeping oceans" described by Khriss. So I think it's likely that the third great domain is to the known Selish continents as the Americas are to Europe, Asia, and Africa: separated by oceans.
  20. Nice. And here I was about to suggest that the Sand Lord is one instance of Bavadin using a male persona. Turns out I was thinking too small. Anyway, I'm not sure what the fuss is about. We've seen Ati pretending to be Reen, and there are plenty of non-Shards with illusion abilities. Seems to me that what Bavadin chooses to appear as at any given moment isn't nearly as important as who it is she is fooling and what they might do because of her. Edit: I'm pretty sure the Sand Lord is mentioned in the White Sand graphic novel. That makes it okay to talk about him, right?
  21. So, I think a point is being missed. Allow me to restate it. First let me quote the most relevant part of the essay, highlighting important words: That statement contains an obvious test that we can use to check if a region is a great domain in itself. Let us apply that test to the continents we know so far. Does Opelon more or less ignore the continent above it? Yes, with the exception of the small Teod peninsula which is an Aonic kingdom. Does the northern continent more or less ignore Opelon? Yes, though again Teod (which is separated from the rest of the continent by a mountain range) is more culturally connected to Opelon. So far so good. We now have two big areas that dismiss each other. We probably need to include Teod in the Opelon "great domain". Anyway, we just need to find the third big area. Then we hear the suggestion that Opelon actually contains two of the three great domains, and that these two great domains are The Fjordell Empire and Elantris. Well then, let's apply the test again: Does the Fjordell Empire more or less ignore Elantris? Most definitely not, as it actively tried to destroy Elantris as part of its goal of subjugating the Aonic kingdoms. Does Elantris more or less ignore the Fjordell Empire? Most definitely not, as it has suffered heavily from and continues to deal with the threat of that empire. Because they failed the test, I believe that the Fjordell Empire and Elantris (and Teod) must be part of the same "great domain", with the Rose Empire being part of another. Hence my conclusion that the third great domain is somewhere else. Note that this argument has nothing to do with whether or not Elantris will become an empire in the future. There could very well be four (or forty two, or more) empires on Sel including such a hypothetical Elantrian empire. I'm just saying there's probably another continent with its own empire/s somewhere on the planet constituting the third "great domain" that Khriss was referring to. Of course, I may simply be looking too much into Khriss' words. Nothing's proven or confirmed yet. It's just a theory.
  22. Oh. I thought the tag was sufficient. I'll do that then. Even if Elantris becomes an empire, conquering some lands that were once under the rule of Wyrn, we still need to account for the third "great domain" because, remember, Khriss claims that all three more or less dismiss each other. Elantrians definitely take the Fjordell Empire very seriously, especially after what happened in the book. Because of that, I think the third great domain must be something else.
  23. A million upvotes to @Joe ST! I'd have tried clicking the "thank" link on all those edits if not for the fact that it would spam your Alerts list. Thank you very much!
  24. From Khriss' essay about the Selish System: I concluded from this that there must be at least three empires on Sel, which correspond to the "three great domains". Let me explain why. The Three Great Domains The only nations we know that isn't part of an empire are Arelon and Teod. Even when combined, those two are hardly big enough to be called a "great domain" on par with its neighboring empires. Also, neither the Arelene nor the Teo pretend that Fjorden is a "mere blip on the map, barely worth notice"; Wyrm and his followers are too much of a danger for the Aonic kingdoms to ignore. The third "great domain" therefore must be somewhere else, perhaps in a continent on the other side of Sel, separated from the known continents by "sweeping oceans" on both sides (the same way the Americas are separated from the Old World by the Atlantic and the Pacific). Multiple Empires So far we've seen two Selish empires: Fjordell and Rose. I think that using the word "multiple" to refer to just two things, while valid, is a bit odd, so I think it's more likely that "multiple empires" means at least one more empire on Sel, which is probably located on the third "great domain". Another Short Story? Three great domains, three continents, three empires. I believe Brandon's Elantris sequels will still be set mostly on Opelon/Sycla, but I'm excited for another possible spin-off short story exploring the third empire on the other side of Sel. I wish Brandon would write it after the Elantris sequels, though. What do you guys think?
