  1. I just assumed that Shadows of Self would follow Wax because Sanderson hints pretty loudly that there's more to happen between him and Marasi. But if there's info on Sazed, I'm all in.
  2. That's what Hoser posted about above: The Parshendi are not human, but you probably already knew that. The two races of Aimaians are not human either. There are many races of sentient spren. From there, it depends if you call something like Ryshadium sentient or not.
  3. Hmm, interesting theory, except the bodies that they find are all on or near the Western edge of the Plains. The battles all tend to happen in the middle of the Plains, meaning that the water brings the bodies westward. I suppose with that huge maze of chasms it's possible that the water just spreads out until it's easy to evaporate. Still, Kaladin's thoughts on the matter are what made me think there may be something more. PhilV, I forgot about that. Thanks for pointing it out!
  4. OH MY GOODNESS. Why didn't I realize this!? I didn't realize that Ruin/Ati could have been influencing Vin via the earring to make her think talking to Hoid would be bad. Although, if I remember that section correctly, she more acts on her gut instincts on that one--it's not like she hears her brother's voice telling her to stay away. Still, if Ruin could persuade her to wear that awful earring, maybe he could send a strong urge/feeling saying "STAY AWAY." Thanks for pointing that out!
  5. Honestly, I think the shared language goes back to a bigger idea that language, particularly written language, plays a huge role in many of the books. We know that Ati and Leras couldn't read words written in metal, but that Ati could alter words that were written otherwise. We know that writing something down about a spren "defines" it so that it can no longer change. The Aons and other symbols on Sel (such as those used for Dahkor and Forgry) are all powered by written language or "letters"/symbols used to create words. I think written language is going to become a huge theme that connects all of the magic systems, since they all originate from (essentially) the same basic sorce: Adonalsium. I have to look around, but I remember reading an answer by Brandon saying that all of the Shards shared the same language because it was the language they had found where they originated--I'll have to go find it. I also wonder if the Herald's not having any accent would tie into this. Honestly, I think it's a pretty cool idea--it's like having words that can create or manipulate magic, when that's exactly what's happening: written words creating magic on the page. I dunno, it kind of ties into the idea that Galavantes posted about here. I personally read Hoid's words that Galavantes highlights in that thread as him saying that he understands he is a character in a book.
  6. This is an interesting idea. I really like how it goes on to talk about this: That sounds a LOT like Korath and Dereth were being influenced by each Shard's intent....
  7. Okay, this is something that keeps bothering me every now and then. Again, tried searching quickly, but I didn't see anything about it yet. Anyway, Kaladin at some point wonders where all the water goes after the Highstorms. The water completely floods the chasms of the Shattered Plains, but somehow it all drains. I don't have a page number (I would look it up, but I don't have a book or an ebook copy), but I remember Kaladin saying that all the water has to go somewhere. I think this is related to what Sigzil said about the one city that is built in the huge ruts in the ground (the city that Kaladin sees when he rides the Highstorm). The city is built into the huge chasms and the slopes of the Stormward side act like a barrier that keeps a major part of the storm's destruction from wreaking havoc on the city. Sigzil mentions that the chasms/ruts would flood, except the stone has a special ability to get rid of the water (maybe it's really porous or something? I don't remember). I feel like something similar is happening on the Shattered Plains. Any thoughts? (Also, I think I'll just suck it up and buy the ebook file--I feel really inadequate not being able to back this up with page numbers...)
  8. Interesting theory! Well, there's a few things we don't know that could help explain this. What happens to an honor spren if the KR it bonded with dies? We know that if a person dies, their Shardblade will stick around because the victor picks it up. Maybe they didn't use to pass blades/plate on--maybe they were buried with the body OR maybe there was a way to release the spren from the bond. But when the KR abandoned their blades on the Day of Recreance, they did something that no one before had done--left their blade for someone else to use. That could explain Brandon's quote/answer saying that there's "something missing" from the current blades/plate: it's probably a connection between the bond and the current holder. Hmm, I started out just thinking this was an interesting idea, but the more I think on it, the more I think it's fairly plausible.
  9. Ooh, do you have a reference for the spren changing thing? I didn't know about that. Also, thumbs up on the much-easier-to-remember-nick-name. Anyway, although I'm not sure if there would have been a large, noticeable effect when Honor was shattered, I do think this is still an excellent question. I've been wondering this for a while. I'm glad that you pointed out that Honor was still alive for all of his visions up to the last one--I wouldn't have thought of that right away. My guess is that his death falls somewhere in here: Somewhere in those first 3,000 years. Source here: http://coppermind.net/wiki/Era_of_Solitude
  10. This makes a lot less sense. I don't think Shallan did anything to make the goblet like her. The goblet practically begged her to change it, but that seemed to do more with the goblet's soul/history than something particular to Shallan. It reminds me a lot like the objects from TES. They want to be nice and well-taken care of or appreciated. I feel this is very similar to what most humans feel--a need to be accepted in the group and feel appreciated. Agreed, and basically the same thought on the matter as I said above.
  11. Ha ha, I do this all the time! Then I feel dumb, that I don't even know what the basic sayings are supposed to be. As an English major, this is particularly problematic. I also have something similar to this. I tend to talk too loud, especially when I talk with my mom for an extended period of time. I can't tell at all, but usually ten minutes into a conversation my mom gets really upset with me and says, "You don't need to yell! Keep your voice down!" The problem is, it's not like I'm good at projecting my voice. It just progressively gets louder. I also have no idea what to do with my hands in a form situation. Presentations, job interviews, talking with the CEO... it's like I'm suddenly unable to control them in a way that's acceptable. So instead, I wind up picking at my nails without noticing, or I grip my hands tightly in my lap or on the table top, which just looks odd itself.
  12. An interesting idea, although I find it somewhat doubtful based on Word of Brandon: This quote doesn't say that spren can't be of Odium, but Brandon does say that the spren we've seen (which is how I interpret "running into") so far are not of Odium. Of course, Axies could be wrong, and Cusicesh could actually be something other than a spren. But the fact that it is appears every day at the same time seems to indicate that it is a spren that is bound by some written definition.
  13. I have to agree on the Elements thing. I knew something was bothering me about it and then I remembered this: This kind of implies that he hasn't touched that subject yet because he hasn't thought of a way that's innovative enough for his standards to pull it off. That was from here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/2383-qa-with-brandon-sanderson/?p=42131 As far as being based ENTIRELY off of Allomancy, well... I'm not sure where I stand on this one. I think there are some similarities between the charts (which I pointed out here) but I agree that they wouldn't be completely the same. Brandon has said that there are things that unify his magic systems, but for now we can only guess what they are. Mostly it seems to have to do with the Realms at this point.
  14. Could the lightweaving be similar to what Raoden used before he completely "fixed" the Aon? He could change the air around him, but not completely? Maybe what Hoid is doing is something very similar to how Raoden's magic would work if it were working 100%. In that case, it's not super odd, since we've seen it in practice before, and Lightweaving sounds very similar.
  15. Ooh, nice catch! I think this is probably true, although I'm surprised we don't see more variation across the continent. Maybe we just need to keep our eyes open.
  16. I could see this theory, although I have to ask how you think the pool would be altered. I'm not saying it wouldn't be--I could buy that as well, but we know that the pool in Elantris is still there and still possesses some abilities despite the splintering of Devotion. I wonder if there are differences between Devotion's pool and Preservation's that we can pick out.
  17. Hmm, I always assumed that he was just thinking "What will my son think of me for seeking out the Old Magic?" or "that I can't even remember my own wife for selfish reasons?" I never read it as having a specific tie to Renarin.
  18. So, a good example for the topic in general, but not for duralumin.
  19. Hmm, another thought. You posted this earlier: I find that interesting, since I had assumed the opposite when looking at the chart: the large glyphs would represent a Herald (and their Honorblade) and a surge, and the smaller glyphs would represent a KR Order, each which is connected to two Hearlds/Surges since each order of KR could utilize two kinds of surges. I guess, aside from the importance of which glyph represents what, it isn't that big a deal, since it works both ways. Also, as for this idea: I'm not quite sure I agree here, either. Yes, there are 16 Shards. Yes, there are 16 (fundamental) Allomatic Metals. However, there are (as of right now) 10 key Shardworlds. There are 10 Heralds (and thus 10 surges) based on the 10 key kingdoms. There are 10 Orders of KR. There are 10 Highprinces of Alethkar. I also remember reading that it was on the 100th desolation that the Heralds abandoned their blades. Only 1 in 10 survived the desolations (as described by Nohadon). At least on Roshar, and possibly in the Cosmere as well, 10 seems to be just as important a number. Perhaps you're right--maybe Honor and Cultivation left out six that they didn't like, which is why 10 is important to Roshar, but the fact that there are 10 key Shardworlds seems to imply that this number carries weight elsewhere in the Cosmere.
  20. Actually, per WoB, Odium is confirmed to be part of that: From: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=691#13 And this: From here: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=836#49 As for this, I don't quite buy it, and here's why: The storm clouds and the woman match up almost perfectly with the images from the map of Shadesmar. If you ask me, this has less to do with Odium and more to do with surges in the Cognitive Realm--perhaps even the related spren? It may be that one of these is the "Symbol" of the cryptic/truthspren. Beyond that, I see no reason why the gem should specifically related to a Shard. Gems play a huge role in Roshar, particularly for getting into Shadesmar. It seems much more likely that the gem and the surrounding lightening have to do with Stormlight and gems. I agree that it is very odd that the inner circle of symbols seem to be inverted or almost "messed up" versions of the first chart, which lends well to your theory. However I have a hard time attributing it solely to Odium without also stating that Odium, then, is in some way responsible for Shadesmar. The only other link I could think of would be to say that Odium somehow /moved/ the basis of his surges into the Cognitive Realm. That would be interesting. But since the most likely (and best WoB-backed theory) so far is that spren have a Cognitive nature, I don't see why the original surges/chart wouldn't already be linked to the Cognitive Realm. (If Kaladin is a KR from the first chart, and if Syl is part of that, then you already have an established connection with the Cognitive Realm). EDIT: Let me add, after looking back at this, that I'm not sitting here trying to pick apart your theory. It's more just that I'm trying to explore what parts of your theory are making me really think about what I've read and what I've seen. I promise I'm not trying to bash you here, and really I should be saying thank you, since you're giving me such great food for thought. I just don't want to come across as argumentative.
  21. Well, wait. I just saw reference that Hoid uses Feruchemy to show up in the right place at the right time. Sanderson has also mentioned that Feruchemists can story "identity," although he doesn't want to talk too much about this subject yet. What if that's what Hoid is doing? Storing identity so that he can easily change his?
  22. I honestly think they would both start out insulting each other (or someone else), but then they'd start throwing out bits of nonsense and the whole argument would devolve into a nonsensical battle, particularly because of Hoid's fondness for "Gibberish" ... That would be hilarious. I want in. As for characters, I'd say Lightsong, Hoid, Shallan and Jasnah. Probably Lightsong wins. I love him so much. And in combination Llarimar he's just fantastic.
