  1. Personally I think partially overlapping bubbles don't exist. Brandon has said that something is either all inside or all outside of a time bubble and I lump the bubbles themselves into that rule. There are hints that an objects cognitive aspect/soul/identity or something about how the object views itself determines if it is in the bubble or not. Gedankenexperiment 1: Two sliders repeatedly take one step toward the other and put up time bubbles while we stand outside and watch what happens. Their bubbles will initially be separate spheres. They step close enough that the edges should overlap, but instead they form two completely separate time bubbles with a barrier at the interface. Just like with soap bubbles, I would assume the interface will try and minimize surface area by forming a perfectly flat wall exactly at the midway point between the allomancers. As the two sliders walk toward each other, the interface becomes larger, but no actual area of overlap occurs. One step closer and the two bubbles merge and compound, multiplying the intensity of the time-dilation effect and possibly affecting a much larger area as well. Gedankenexperiment 2: The same as above, except using two pulsers with identical results Gedankenexperiment 3: A pulser and a slider walk toward each other putting up time bubbles with each step. Initially the pulser bubble is much larger than the slider's, but otherwise they are both perfect separate spheres. Once they get close enough that overlap should occur the bubbles create an interface barrier. As they continue to approach the interface grows. They take a final step closer and the slider bubble appears for an instant before the pulser starts to burn at which point both bubbles collapse into neutral time. As soon as one of them stops burning the other allomancer's bubble appears.
  2. Metals burned on Scadrial reform in the earth somehow. I have been assuming the Tears are a way to get back the colors used in Awakening. If that is the case, there very well could be some shardic mojo going on that only lets them grow in a certain location.
  3. I don't have a good answer for you, and ultimately it's pure speculation. Personally I think he split into 16 parts because he had previously defined himself into 16 different aspects that all balanced each other out. Restated, shattering just completely separates attributes that were already somewhat partitioned in the whole.
  4. The ability to make things go pure white is a symptom of a greater power to my eyes. It implies complete control over color, and I'm certain Brandon will not disappoint us with his in-book extrapolations of what that could allow.
  5. This theory basically states that if you accelerate close to the speed of light and then pop up a slider bubble you would be traveling faster than light from the perspective of those outside the bubble. Simple, straightforward FTL. Flavor with the possibility of bendalloy compounding, add in a way to prevent undesired aging and you have a shiny new concept with lots of potential. Some concerns with this theory: -I expect to have feruchemy involved and it is conspicuously absent. While not required strictly speaking, Brandon's quotes on the subject of FTL strongly hint at an interaction between allomancy and feruchemy. -The idea of large bendalloy bubbles is appealing, but based on the effect of flaring I expect duralumin to enhance the time-compression rather than expand the size. Effectively, for the few seconds of a duralumin burst time would appear to stop outside the bubble rather than moving at molasses speed. -Time is not dependent on matter being present, and there is just as much time in deep space as there is on earth. Assuming a time altering bubble expands to very large size simply because there is no physical matter in the area seems poorly supported. -You have suggested that an allomancer can adjust the reference frame of a time bubble, but Brandon tells us that even on a moving vehicle a bubble remains fixed relative to Scadrial. The bond of a planet to those born there should even persist when in outer space, so how do you account for voluntary frame shifts? -I would expect a slider bubble inside a pulser bubble to cancel each other out regardless of reference frame. I think your ideas may work to get FTL, but only if you remove the pulsers and allow aging to occur. So far I'm sticking with the Chromium Controlled Slider Bubble theory based on the Infinite Improbability Drive
  6. I'd speculate that identity attunement to feruchemy would involve a form of spiritual balance or a zen-type philosophical outlook. That attitude prevailed Terris culture. It could also be something like being born on Scadrial or living on the planet for a time. Back to the main post, I've always assumed Hoid was actively using lightweaving to change his appearance and Vin noticed the ripples of his actions with her double seeker powers.
  7. Brandon has said that FTL is possible with a novel interaction between feruchemy and allomancy that requires a "deep understanding" of the metallic arts that us readers don't yet have. That suggests without a complex use of both magics FTL isn't possible. We know the same limits on approaching the speed of light exist in the cosmere, and there is no reason to assume feruchemical steel changes the nature of light, or the shape of space-time. It is a fun theory, but doesn't seem to fit what we have been told.
  8. There are two popular speculations about how Hoid gained feruchemy: He may have learned to unlock it the natural way, or he could have stolen it with Hemalurgy. He would have needed to link up his investiture and identity to Ruin and Preservation to manage that feat. Since Hoid was created before the shattering, some theorize he has a piece of Adonalsium inside him with links to all 16 shards. It's clear that innate investiture isn't enough to use a magic system, and it seems snapping or a similar Identity Attunement is required for every form of magic. I have no idea what the requirement is for feruchemy, but it's not beyond reason that Hoid could have figured it out.
  9. My take: Hemalurgy seems to be able to steal parts of the soul itself. Anything with a soul can be spiked. Inserting the spike in specific points on the physical body steals different aspects of the soul. "Bind points" are just a way to catalog body-soul correlations in hemalurgy and are loosely based on acupuncture. Essentially there are flowing pathways of spiritual energy that can be accessed at various locations on the body. "Right spiritual and genetic codes" can be any aspect of someone's soul you want to steal and is not limited to the codes on Scadrial. You must have spiked your dog. However, I need more evidence for me to accept this theory. I have never seen anyone without investiture from Ruin create a hemalurgic spike, though it seems Ruin can make them directly. The "random" spikes created in the mistborn series were too carefully arranged to be coincidence. Personally, I believe you need investiture from Ruin and an Identity attuned to him before you can create Spikes. As a side note, tell your dog to beware the Catquisitors and Mistborn Llamas. They spit.
  10. I could see the end results of the breeding program in AoL producing mistborn in a couple hundred years. Brandon even hints there may be full mistborn and feruchemists during the time of AoL in this quote: But anyway, you can have one Allomantic and one Feruchemical [power]. But not a lot of Mistborn and not a lot of full Feruchemists anymore. QUESTIONDo you explain how the Feruchemists came back, because at the end there were a lot of eunuchs and... BRANDON SANDERSONYeah, well, that's one of the reasons why Feruchemy has been split because it's very diluted now. The Terris people did survive because they made it. And so, the genetic code is there. QUESTIONERAnd so, every once in a while, hereditarily, the gene will come up. BRANDON SANDERSON Yeah. But that's why there aren't very many full-blooded Feruchemists anymore. A thousand years of the Lord Ruler trying to breed it out of the population followed by a cataclysm that destroyed most of the population of the world did them in, yeah. source
  11. We all assume that ruin was very bad at foresight, and there is some evidence for that. However, most speculation of why he was so short sighted falls flat to my eyes. People have said he wants things destroyed NOW and doesn't have the capability of looking ahead. I strongly disagree. Death is the END state of all living things, and that seems to tie ruin into foresight even more strongly than other shards. The allomantic power of Atium further discredits claims that the Intent is opposed to future sight. So if he could see far into the future, why didnt he? I think Ati chose not to look ahead. We know he was a good man. Hoids letter suggests his Shard ruined him, but are we certain there wasn't still a part of Ati fighting to limit Ruin's reach?
  12. “You have a point,” Dalinar said. “You realize, however, that in doing this I would essentially be giving you the same authority as a lighteyes of fourth dahn. You’d be in charge of a thousand former bridgemen. A full battalion.” “Yes.” Dalinar thought for a moment. “Very well. Consider yourself appointed to the rank of captain—that’s as high as I dare appoint a darkeyes. If I named you battalionlord, it would cause a whole mess of problems. I’ll let it be known, however, that you’re outside the chain of command. You don’t order around lighteyes of lesser rank than you, and lighteyes of higher rank have no authority over you.” He is listed an as exception to the rank rules right in the book, but it does imply his current rank of captain is "above" some lighteyes. Note, it never said his nahn status was changed.
  13. Isomere means "identical parts". Objects made up of the same parts, but with different structure are called isomers. The idea came because of all the symmetry in the Way of Kings, and mirror images are all isomers. For example, your right and left hand are isomers, the left and right sides of all the glyphs are isomers, and the top and bottom of the letters in the Vorin alphabet are isomers. If you have read my early posts you will know that I was obsessed with quantum probability waves which also tend to have rotational symmetry. Another reason I went with the name is because it fits me. I often feel like I'm just somehow off; that I'm fundamentally different from "normal" people around me, but we are all made up of the same parts. Sneak a little wangst into a name and it becomes so much more fun and meaningful.
  14. Where did you hear this from? Hemalurgic mistborn/feruchemy twintastic bracers would be very fun.
  15. Brandon has said that infusing stormlight is similar to charging a feruchemical metal or a hemalurgic spike. Source That means that stormlight represents an investiture in the gems. Does it get stored in the lattice space? in the atoms? in the chemical bonds? I'd say none of these, but rather is stored in the gem's spiritual realm aspects.
  16. I'd just take the entire sentence out. Kaladin is a huge exception, essentially "outside" the nahn and dahn rankings.
  17. I had no idea oxides were excluded from salts, thanks for the clarification. A salt then is an electrically neutral ionic compound whose constituents can be formed through proton exchange reactions. Going back to the thread topic, most of the Stormgems are ionic compounds, but diamonds are covalent. Based on what we know, that doesn't change how long they remain infused. Structure must not be what determines how long stormlight can be held.
  18. An oxide reaction is by definition an acid-base reaction. Acids steal electrons, and bases lose electrons, so any time a metal forms an oxide it is acting as a base. If it then forms a precipitate that would be a salt. If it forms a solution it would be an electrolyte. I previously said that salt is another word for ion. That is like saying a rectangle is another word for square, only true if the rectangle has equal sides. An Ion is only salt if it has precipitated. Salt doesn't have to precipitate with the original acid/base pair, any electrically neutral precipitate of ionic compounds is called a salt. For example, if you have lithium bromide and silver nitrate salts and mix them together in water, the ions can switch partners. Silver bromide (AgBr) is still a salt even though it didn't have an acid base reaction together. Li+ (aq) + Br- (aq) + Ag+ (aq) + NO3- (aq) Li+ (aq) + NO3- (aq) + AgBr (s) I was extrapolating that principle to call Beryl a salt of beryllium, aluminum and silicate. I still believe this is true, but I am not certain.
  19. Salt grid does accurately describe many crystal lattices. "Salt" is just another word for ion: an atom that has lost or gained an electron and now has a positive or negative charge. If these ions are arranged in an alternating lattice they create a crystal held together by the magnetic charges. Emerald and heliodor are both made of beryllium and aluminum salts. Be2+, Al3+, and Si032- which means the Beryllium atom has lost two electrons, the Aluminum atom has lost three electrons and the silicate molecule stole 2 electrons. They naturally form crystals with zero net charge, in this case grouping Be3Al2(SiO3)6. Diamonds in contrast are held together by covalent carbon bonds and are much stronger. EDIT: So i was wrong about the definition of salt. The ions must be producible in an acid base reaction and must form a solid compound to be salt.
  20. Jasnah said, “Two orders of the Knights Radiant possessed inherent Soulcasting ability; it was based on their powers that the original fabrials were designed, I believe." From WOK 72.
  21. While there are some clues, this is all wild speculation and guesses mingled with mad picture-matching skills. I'm gonna go ahead and assume he's not a transvestite, and he can't be Taln. That leaves us with Jez, Nan, Kak and Ishi. This guy doesn't strike me as resembling Jezrien or Kalak from the prologue. Picking between Ishi and Nan, we are looking for an old dude with a beard so I chose Ishi. And before you ask, heralds implode if they disguise their appearance or grow new facial hair.
  22. And hopefully it doesn't require several years of stretching someone's stomach to fit a metric ton of Bendalloy inside.
  23. @13: The original Fabrials were based on powers that KRs could use. That doesn't mean the Radiants didn't keep experimenting and develop Fabrials with unique powers. I interpret the dilemma in your third section to mean that there is no KR surge for Regrowth and they were required to access it via Fabrial.
  24. As you pointed out, the guy just seems suspicious. The way he asks "Have you seen me?" reminds me of the milk-carton lost child adds we had in grade-school. Who disappeared suddenly and is currently still missing? What face should be instantly recognizable to the god fearing Alethi nobility? One of the Heralds. Add to that his statue around the corner and you have some very fun Irony.
