Your Favorite High Fantasy Books
-Deleted- replied to ProfessorMLyon's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I see a lot of the obvious answers such as LotR and things like Wheel of Time and Cosmere an d I feel that these are probably already thought of by you, so I'll think of things that probably weren't posted. How about Brian McClellan, Daniel Abraham and NK Jemisin? Thlose are all authors that I, as a pretty big fan of fantasy, feel are very strong newer authors who are each doing things no one else has done in the genre before, much like the a;ready-mentioned Wheel of Time, Sanderson, Rothfuss and LotR. Also, some really amazing stand-alones are Imajica, Jonathon Stranfe & Mr Norrell, Paradise Lost (technically an epic poem, but still fantasy), The Princess Bride, Gossamar (Lois Lowry), The Last unicorn and Tigana. Also, I second the mention of The Gentleman Bastards. The first one was very good. Same goes for Codex Alera, and if it hasn't been mentioned I firmly believe Gormenghast should come back into popularity. -
You missed Aether of Night.

The list posted looks pretty accurate. It's a shame Warbreaker is so far off, especially with certain Words of Radiance parts. It's all good, though. I think that Firefight, Rithmatist 2 and Alacatraz 5 ought to give us a bit of space from the Cosmere. Yeah, Nightblood is probably a far-off hope for now. But hey, in that time we'll see Shadows of Self, Sixth of the Dusk, another Mistborn Adventures novel, Stones Unhallowed and I'm pretty sure we will see Elantris 2 before we see Nightblood, which is the 2nd and final Warbreaker novel. So don't worry, you'll get plenty of epic fantasy. You should check out The Emperor's Soul, by the way. It is awesome. I only say that because it's the only one you didn't list.

Words of Radiance is my favorite book yet, and Stormlight is my favorite series. But I don't mind seeing the two Mistborn Adventuress, first. And, hopefully, Elantris. But most of all I'd really like to see Nightblood. Though, that is pretty far off I think. it's a shame; it could be a while before we get THOSE answers to both Warbreaker and Words of Radiance. But yeah, I read a bunch of times that Elantris 2 is suppose to be out for Elantris' 10th anniversary. Not a Stormlight book, but it's still a Cosmere work. So I count it and the Mistborn Adventures. Oh, and The Sixth of Dusk. Really can't wait for that one.

I second that. Especially since we'll be seeing a lot more of Nightblood than I ever expected lol. That honestly caught me way off guard at the end. But yeah, if Nightblood doesn't count, then definitely the flute. Or, to shake things up a bit: The Diagram. That is tied with the flute for first if we don't count Nightblood.

Well, Szeth doesn't have an Honorblade anymore, but I'm not sure what to make of your theory. I'm having a hard time following it. i'm just excited to see how the Assassin in White gets along with Nightblood. But yes, I think he lost the powers the Blade gave him when it unbonded upon his death.

[Theory] It has been foreshadowed that Adolin will be a Radiant.
-Deleted- replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I hope Adolin is a Radiant. I'm pretty sure the Radiants are the four we currently know (trying to avoid spoilers here), Adolin and then a few others we haven't met yet. On a more unlikely note, I hope Lift becomes a Radiant and that Rysn becomes involved in some way. -
I'm pretty sure he's Taln. And if he isn't, he's still very important to watch. But it makes too much sense for him not to be Taln. he even has the craziness you would expect a guy who just spent 4500 years in the Cosmere's Hell.

Eshonai will be perfect for book 4. Her character fascinated me. I believe Taravangian's will be the most interesting by far, but I believe he's pretty far off for now, I believe until 2nd sequence. So i'm really glad Eshonai will get her own book. I believe Dalinar's will be the most revealing, though. Keeping in mind that Dalinar's flashbacks will not only cover whatever happened to his memory, but it will help us learn about the Old Magic, as well as give more insight to Dalinar, Gavilar and Sadeas' relationship directly. It might also be the only time we see Kholinar pre-riot and pre-Everstorm, outside of the celebration night.

Oh, I absolutely think Mraize is a Worldhopper and that he is using the Ghostbloods for some sort of Cosmere mission. I immediately thought that when the book showed his things on display in the glass cases that weren't recognizable.

Wonderful! I'm thrilled to hear confirmation. Now,m on a new note: who wants Rysn to have her own novel? I know we've only seen her briefly, but her story fascinates me and if she got her own book focus, we could gave a new big plot line and the purpose of her is to show us the world. It'd be perfect lol.

Not so much a theory, but Cosmere-related. There's just these couple of recurring things I noticed in the Cosmere novels that are minor, but thought were cute and I'm not even sure if Sanderson knows he's doing it. Actually, I hope you don't read this Sanderson, because I love these things and wouldn't want you to become too conscious and stop them lol. NOT: THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW TO A NUMBER OF BOOKS Anyway, this is what they are: Each female lead in each of the Cosmere stories is on a trip of betrothal. Excepting Vin, this is true: -Serene going to Raodan (Elantris) -Vivienna to the god-king (Warbreaker) -Shallan to Adolin (Words of Radiance) I am nicknaming this the Betrothal Cosmere Trope. The second one is: Most stories so far ends with a character becoming a literal giant -Sazed breaking out of the cell (Hero of Ages) -Shai escaping the monsters (Emperor's Soul) -Vasher becoming Warbreaker (Warbreaker) -The uncle turning out to be the pirate-barbarian (Elantris; not so much literal) I call it the Hulk Cosmere Trope. Just thought I'd share this. I think it's awesome.

So, the first book was Kaladin's, Words of Radiance is Shallan's, book 3 is Szeth's and book 5 is Dalinar's. So who has book 4's flashbacks? Who would you like them to be? I think Eshonai would be a good choice for this because of her travels. I also would love for Navani to have a book. And I can just about guarantee it won't be Hoid. Sanderson is either holding that back for one of the final books, or holding that completely for Hoid's series. In that case we won't be seeing that for quite a while. Who do you think would be best to have the flashbacks for in book four?

#1 bestseller doesn't make a #1 best author. Putting in the effort to make a book like this does.

It could be a simple hint that he becomes a part of the family either legally, or metaphorically. Since you're re-reading the book, I presume you've finished it at least once? I do agree it's one of the more interesting epigraphs from the two sets of medical records. One of them, I've always personally theorized, was his father's current-time patient records, the other being battle medic records. Just remembered that they are probably Taravangian's. Though, the two sets are distinct.

Man. I have GOT to get my hands on White Sand, Aether of Night and Dragonsteel at some point. I haven't read Alcatraz yet. in fact, that and Legion are the only published things from him I haven't gotten to.
-
I couldn't agree more. Hoid and Lightsong are my favorite characters. And now that Lightsong is, well, those who read know what I mean, I think Vasher is my new favorite and I can't wait to see what his next story is. And Hoid's backstory *mouth waters*.
-
Oh I know. I don't agree with you on the YA novels (because I really liked the Rithamtist and am really excited for the Steelheart trilogy) but I do agree with the Cosmere novels. I'm always just so excited for the beginning to a brand new series, or a standalone in a previously unseen world. And the fact that they're in the Cosmere makes it all the more better. And I think Skyward will be interesting because it's a YA Cosmere standalone in a new world. So I'm also excited for that. and yeah, both the new short story and novella coming out are on my mind constantly. I've also been dying to read all of the books his past students have put out (Daniel Abraham, Brian McClellan and Peggy Eddleman (and if you know of others let me know)). Sanderson mentioned once that he wanted to do books on other continents of Scadrial. And that's probably a VERY long while from now, but I look forward to it some day. And I'm curious as to the POVs for Elantris 3, which makes me pumped even more for Elantris 2 (which I have a feeling our Dula friend will be absent from). Brandon Sanderson seems, so far, to be doing a megaseries the waty I've always dreamed and planned on doing one. And if it is going the same route I think it is, Dragonsteel will be, by far, the greatest out iof all of this. Which isn't for probably another couple decades and will be well worth the wait. Anyway, don't get me wrong. I'm psyched for the sequels, I think Stormlight will remain my favorite series until the day I die, I'm really excited for the interludes, epigraphs, plots, new characters, artwork, etc. I'm really excited for the next two Mistborn trilogies and the Wax & Wayne novels to come. I'm curious in regards to the short story and novella. And I'm loving the YA novels. BUT, nothing beats a series debut or a fresh standalone novel in my mind.
-
I think I am most excited for The silence Divine. I say this because it's not too far off, it's a full-length novel in Cosmere set on a fresh, new world. I',m actually more excited for it than the next nine Stormlight books, the next six Mistborn books and so on. even though Stormlight is my favorite series to date. As far as my excitement priority list (ignoring Stormlight sequels). My top four are all set in the new worlds for a reason. TOP 4 1. Silence Divine 2. Liar of Partinel 3. White Sand 4. Skyward THE REST 5. Elantris 2 6. Nightblood 7. Shadows of Self 8. Steelheart 1-3 9. Rithmatist sequels.

Be that as it may, he could very well have decided after the idea to change Kaladin's name that him and Kalad were either the same person or connected since the background story isn't set in stone.

So I don't know if this means anything or if anyone else has touched on this, but Kalad, the name attached to the secret army referred to as Kalad's Phantoms in Warbreaker is a shortened version of Kaladin's name, the prmary character in The Stormlight Archive. Now since the events of Warbreaker supposedly happened before the Stormlight Archive, that isn't actually provable at this moment. So could Kaladin somehow end up on Nalthis and be a part of its history? Or could someone from his bridge crew or someone else inspired by him become a worldhopper and end up on Nalthis, using Kaladin's name or a variation of it to uphold his inspiration?

So, sanderson said two Stormlight books every three years, with another epic to take a break. He said after Stormlight 3 is Elantris 2.After 4 and 5, what book do you think will fill the net slot? I'm guessing that it would be Warbreaker 2. What do you guys think? Good chance? I love Warbreaker.

Thanks, Windrunner. I'm a huge Sanderson fan, TOR fan, fantasy fan and just a massive bookworm and huge fandom geek lol. So I'm really glad I finally remembered to make thjis account. I've been reading stuff on the 17th Shard and Coppermind ever since I found Hoid in more than one book. lol. I love this fandom. I love being a member of the 17th Shard a bit more than being a Whovian lol. I love it here, I love talking to other members here and having people to talk to about my favorite series. If Tarvangian has his own book, that would be kickass. I think it would be cool for Hoid to have a Stormlight book, but I don't think that will happen what with the Yolen books planned to possibly be released someday (which I personally cannot wait for).
