    The evil sandcastle ghost was very excited. Rebus, who was also interested in causing trouble and perhaps war, teleported in front of the castle.

    “So my role is to improve this, correct? Sponges or flatworms rather than cnidarians would make a better base phylum, in my opinion.”

    Rebus felt his perception of the world return, though not nearly to the level it would have been before. That was likely for the best. Knowing that Symbol was still distressed, he didn’t say anything as he helped her onto the bird. Rebus could show up. He considered it, weighing the benefits and drawbacks. Hmm, maybe I should give one of them a different name. Though I guess that’s also confusing. Rebus paid whatever it was some tangential attention. Perhaps it would be useful.

    Very well. In exchange for not intentionally explaining things contrary to your wishes, I shall accept the return of my knowledge of posts. Rebus - the shell he had left behind - looked to see what had happened to Bat, both with the teleportation beacon and with Narration.

    Puzzle nodded, considering the conversation over so they could attend to the task at hand. Puzzle did not exist. She felt herself not existing, not being written, and was pretty sure it would continue forever, lost with no powers, no purpose, and no ability to effect anything.

    So unless my intention is to explain things contrary to your desires, I may act as I wish? I would accept that deal. Rebus was… disappointed. Tam had a lot of potential, and he’d invested effort that was now wasted. Without Tam, Bat and even him might suffer the same fate if he did not change the course of the plot. But he would survive; another character would come along soon enough. And then he could truly be the ultimate villain. So would you rather run a different character, or are you trying to cut off your involvement in general?

    “Is he permitted to know his experiment?” “I agree. Do you forget new experiences? Perhaps you could be given a journal to remember.”

    Rebus held up a remote, with a bright red button. “I’ll give you one post to return, or I’ll consider you to have chosen the third option.” Rebus stepped closer to Symbol, trying to project support. What is your condition? I might stay this way, get you or her to put my mindset closer to Tam’s.

    Will thought about it. “The amnesia might itself be an experiment - it’s useful for both brainwashing and trauma counseling, and if the memories are transferred rather than erased it has even more applications.”

    “Huh. They tried to give me a perfect memory, but I’m not sure if it worked or I’ve just been practicing.”

    Jack was a little confused. (He was also a steampunk automaton in a suit jacket, but that was unrelated) “I’m Jack…” Heir (aka @Dragonheir), on the other hand, was gone now. That didn’t mean he couldn’t talk, though. I’m the Author of a number of people. Kion, Rebus, Meat, and Jack are the ones I think you’ve met. I’m not actually sure what prize I could give you that you couldn’t duplicate on your own…

    Puzzle could tell she had questions, but those could be answered later. Cole felt good that he was able to fulfill the actions asked of him, knowing but not caring that that wasn’t actually the case. Insanity had advantages, such as ignoring reality. But once he realized he was on the ship, he began to panic. Was there still time? Had he ran yet? He tried to look at the things that made up his surroundings, not because he needed the information, but because the power was from Calm, and he needed that mental state if he wanted to save the other carpenters. Puzzle wondered if Enocs could read scone-related thoughts. She remembered Rebus interacting briefly with a cookie-man, and thought perhaps this person was also a slightly altered clone of a TLT character.

    “A sword - molecular cutting, self replicating ‘poison’, and nanoscale materials, if you’re wondering.” ”What sort of power?” Puzzle asked, wondering if it would charge her nanomachines. Puzzle considers striking at them, but decides that is a poor choice. I did!

    Alright! Winning is a pretty good trade, anyway. What do you want me to do next? Puzzle coalesced a thin - but deceptively strong and sharp - blade into her hand. It was most of the nanomachines she had free, but a weapon would be valuable. Cole, who was next to him (I think) provided backup whistling.

    Great! This cloak is one of your clothes now, here you go! He put the cloak down on the ground. Can I borrow your cloak? “I would say yes.” Puzzle began to follow Evee through the water.

    "Excellent." Puzzle returned the handshake.

    Yup, and then you'll give me powers and make me less insane! Or more, it depends. But my cloak is yours now, I hope you like it! "Of course. If we can reach the Beyonder, we can both pass this test - an alliance is better for our chances."

    "To help you, and receive help in return. My name is Puzzle, and I'd like to offer you an alliance. Only one can win, but if I am the only person you must defeat alone, your chances improve greatly." Puzzle was smiling, friendly but perhaps threatening. Oh, are you a Spirit too? You don't work for Rage, right? Good. You can have my cloak, then!

    Rebus felt helpless. His powers, he did not miss. But the knowledge he should have had stung. Symbol was in pain, and he didn't know what had happened, what memory she was witnessing, so he couldn't help.

    Puzzle watched. She knew these tricks, this posturing. She - Rebus, who she had been - used them. They were the mark of a pretender, though a pretender who certainly held power. This Beyonder might truly hold the position he claimed, but this was still a show, a performance. Perhaps anything more subtle would be simply ignored by those present. The darkness below her would be a problem to bypass without wasting valuable energy. But @IcedOutPenguin had already begun to clear a path, and an alliance would be helpful. She walked carefully over, taking the same steps that being had taken. Cole's fingers were inches away from the Stone when everything went black. But rather than awaken on the ground as he should have, he was in an arena. Calm and Freedom were both silent, so clearly this glowing man was fine to trust. He smiled and took off his cloak. "Glowy man! I have a present for you!"

    Will's grip was firm but not painful. "Did you ask for engagement in the experiments as well?"

    Rebus figured the best thing to do was to wait - he adopted a solemn look and prepared to intervene if necessary.
