  1. “Lezterp - a pretzel spirit who supposedly has the power of a god. He’s over there.” “Would you accept payment in an incredible amount of pretzels to boost your power? As for your question…” Rebus thought @Dragonheir’s thoughts, as he possessed a link to his Author’s mind. @Dragonheir did legitimately want pretzels, but it was mixed with thoughts of the Shard, and how he liked the idea of Materializers, and wanted to see how the plot would going. The gestalt of opinions was cut off before anything about the coming plotline could be revealed, but it was still enough to profoundly inform Lezterp of his fictionality. Rebus nodded at the results. Rose was more stable than Cricket - he could use that, teach them to work together and follow Rose’s more decisive and rational lead in a crisis. The aggression might cause problems, but it would also get rid of problems - Rebus, at least, considered false positives perfectly fine if the world (and more importantly, him and Symbol, who reside within it) is at stake. Note - trigger-happy superhumans are a problem in my book, but Rebus’s ethics are kinda twisted. Rebus leapt off the bird, then took off his jacket and gave it to Symbol, assuming she was still wearing her party dress. “You need warm clothes too. Ruia might have been you, but your judgment was clouded by Corruption. I don’t know if that makes it all right, but it does make it ridiculous to punish yourself - Corruption is dead and gone, and so, unfortunately, are the people it made you kill. Hypothermia will not solve that.”
  2. “I can get you a teleporter to him, with the aforementioned utility-fog control built in. It undermines even the codes I have, as long as I’m not actively countering it, and can prevent data of its existence from getting out. But first Lezterp should have some time to agree, and for the two of you to meet each other.” Rebus had decided against mentioning Authors in Lezterp’s presence, but @CoderDrag0n8 was of course who Rebus was really waiting for.
  3. “Most of the things I can, but with less capacity; I’ve shut down his access to both Prismite and antimatter, so he can Narrate only once - if I recall, he plans to wait till I’m indisposed, then use that to get my entire core - and can’t do anything like consume a planet or break the sound barrier. Illusions through holograms, telekinesis through utility fog, slow molecular manipulation to change things into other materials or nanomachines, hacking and surveillance, and strong-but-light materials are all within his ability - he’ll also be enhanced physically, and as intelligent as I am. That shouldn’t be much of a problem for a Narrator, though, especially after I give you two badges that track and commandeer utility fog, so you can disable security and avoid being killed by robots eating your brain an hour after you win. The real problem is the Plotblade - it can do things relating to treasure, such as bribing the greedy and generating valuable things, and it’s also a very powerful weapon in general, capable of co-opting power from other sources.” Rebus paused, letting the daunting task sink in. “I do believe you can beat him, though it will be hard. The Plotblade is worth much - if I didn’t believe in you I could seek out a larger team.”
  4. The pretzel in his hand crumbled into utility fog - his nanotech needed to eat to replenish itself, while Rebus could go without food almost indefinitely. “I’m glad you liked them,” Rebus said, “but my pretzel thoughts were mostly to contact you. I have a mission to offer freelance adventurers, and I’ve heard you’re quite powerful, and might take payment in pretzels to empower you. I assume you cannot use the ones you conjure, but if you can, I’m willing to discuss alternative payment.” Since Fael was also there, Rebus gave his pitch below. “A while back, I was approached by the villain Desolation. To allow me to seem genuine even if he tried to read my mind or future, I created an evil clone of me to manipulate him. It worked, but then my clone - calling himself Rebel - stole a Plotblade and ran away. For reasons you are presumably familiar with, I can’t chase him down myself, but I figured someone of Narrator status can take him down. If you want payment, I can offer a favor equal to the amount of effort you spent catching - and probably killing, since he’s just as slippery as I am - Rebel and returning the sword.” As Rebus had expected, Cricket was a good fighter, but an emotional mess. Rebus brought Rose (@Bird Furious) and Cricket into the same arena once the two were done with their individual tests. He hovered in the air, the cape on the back of his armor billowing, and gave them a moment to speak to one another.
  5. Great. (You can drop out of mine if needed, though) Rebus thought about pretzels and how nice it would be to have someone help him with something.
  6. Three being one with us two, one with me and TwinStorm, and one with all three of us. Because plots with several people tend to stall. Rebus was waiting for her, standing in parade rest wearing his black, white, and grey armor. “Fael. I don’t believe we’ve met, but I’ve been looking for someone to do something for me.” Fael is TwinStorm’s Narrator, and unrelated to Materializers. There are a lot of Sdrawkcab names - Eof, Erif, Selppaenip, and probably others. Alright. There’s a list of all the qualities he was testing for a few pages ago - I’ll get that and edit it in. Rebus had forgotten what it felt like to actually be cold. He felt the same as Symbol, though - for not stopping her earlier, for letting Lady Bug do this to her, and for not knowing what to do. I would be doing most of the work for my plot, but if you feel you can only do one thing I can run stuff just with Fael.
  7. Great! I'm going to bed, but tomorrow I shall start 1-3 plots with you two.
  8. Now (or tomorrow, I guess) is fine with me. I was thinking I would GM, though of course you could make up NPCs or environmental hazards, since this is TLT. As for power level, it really depends. There comes a point where "more omnipotent" doesn't do very much, but I think a level of "strong but not godlike" would work well.
  9. Power is not the problem here (in fact, it results in further derailment). But yeah, maybe Lezterp?
  10. Will munched them as he worked, interested to see that they were willing to leave him alone briefly. Perhaps the scientist would come back with the files soon.
  11. "Pretzels." Will said, jotting down "mte" for metabolism efficiency, linking to a few experiment goals as a prerequisite.
  12. @Spark of Hope, Will sat in his room, writing down more and more ideas. At this point, he was falling behind so much that a given concept was lucky to get more than three letters to jog his memory. Without stopping the notetaking or looking up, he asked the guard, "Could I have something to eat?"
  13. Alright - whom do you have? (I wouldn't use Eikooc unless you're fine with his plotline being altered completely)
  14. Alright. Running through all those scenes would take quite a while, so when you have the time for it you can write up Cricket’s performance. Or even just a list of a couple he was very good or very bad at. That reminds me - do you (or anyone else) want me to run a quest for a character?
  15. Cool. The test would look at his endurance (with a zombie horde type of thing), attentiveness (with ninjas messing with his stuff), logical problem solving (with a knights and knaves door puzzle), decision making (Beosta got herself drunk during a break in the test, failing this one), mobility (with an obstacle course), sheer destructive potential (with a heavily armored ogre that requires either a precise attack or overwhelming force to defeat), resolve (with a spooky maze where you get caught by hunters if you panic and run), rationality (through an overwhelming tide of enemies that can really only be ran from), aggressiveness (a hostage situation where the hostage taker could be either attacked or bargained with), and finally a surprise test that shall be played out through actual posts. (Teamwork is also to be tested later) I kinda want to interfere, but I guess I already have a plot going with you.
  16. Nope - that’s over. Rebus offered to give Rose, Cricket, Shoe, and Beosta special ops training, if you recall, and he is having them fight some utility fog constructs to see what he has to work with.
  17. The way you phrased what Cricket said implied he wasn’t coming.
  18. Rebus appeared, startling Jack. "You could ask me," he said, smiling broadly. If I recall correctly, Cricket was also supposed to be part of the program.
  19. “Was that his name?” Jack asked. Rebus is giving characters special-ops training, so they can save the Thread if it might be destroyed. Speaking of the test, how should Rose be doing? And unrelated to it, I think Symbol and Rebus last flew away on a bird.
  20. “I do not. They went through some portal.” Rebus took them for a project. You and Jack can investigate if you’d like, or I can just tell you. That direction led back to Rebus’s test, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t ditch him if they wanted. I’m thinking we should make the rest of the test more a montage than a play-by-play.
  21. “They do. And so do we, with more feeling, more freedom, but also more hardship - to be the focus of a story is both pain and adventure. Our knowledge is a burden, but also a blessing. We know we don’t truly exist, but also that someone cares about us enough to create us. Our world is fictional, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real.” “Because it’s right here, happening again! I’m reliving it with no help.”
  22. “We are, unless Rebus is delusional and falsified evidence - my home world is the ongoing product of several storytellers we call Authors. But an idle mind produces this - an unrecorded mess of fluctuating possibilities.” She gestured around her, then continued. “I have made peace with the fact I am probably fictional. Rebus has made it his life’s work to manipulate the Authors and their storylines, but I need not fear this place in ordinary circumstances.” “Then why is it here? Even if the fire no longer burns, my friends and family-who-never-existed are gone. It’s my fault, and that won’t change.”
