Rebus grins. “In that case, I accept the deal. I shall not willingly approach Atlas, and I shall spare a shadow of the Scribe. Good night - we should both likely go to bed. Oh, it will be, at least if Rebus has anything to say about it. That shall be very cool…- 111859 replies

Uh oh. How familiar are you with strange matter? I abruptly exist, foreshadowing a terrible event yet to come. Multiple, actual. I also almost eat a normal sandwich, then change my mind and order a burrito bowl instead.

The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
DragonHeir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Rebus wondered how that had happened - where had their conversation stopped? “That is my hope - I think I need one more piece. Both to tweak the plot element, and because actual plot demands it.” Sadly, I must sleep soon. “Dr. Rebus Honesty Clarke dares - Narrator, Archvillain, and wielder of the Plotblade Antagonist!” Rebus declared. He hovered above the ground, prepared - hopefully - to deal with Calamity. As for Mischief, Rebus registered the smell the same way he would register pain - without frustration or negative effects, merely an acknowledgment that something was abnormal and maybe harmful. Yay! Yup, that would fulfill the contract. (The paper is also in Xino’s blog, but Rebus wants the canonical copy) He would also accept a different requirement for the ritual - he needs to know what the knife and the sacrifice actually are, then acquire them, and he needs help from three Authors.- 111859 replies

Rebus’s crown of darkly glowing metal - the Plotblade Antagonist, the certificate that he was the most threatening person in the Thread - sat on his head, upward points viciously sharp. “Antagonist is my Plotblade. You may know of them - they represent plot elements, and are powerful magic weapons. If you can confirm it is the weapon I need, that would fulfill the debt. If you agree, so do I.” Alright, then. Once this becomes a full-blown crossover, I predict it shall see much use.- 111859 replies

“There are four things I require - a piece of paper, written in gibberish and in Bacon’s possession; knowledge of its meaning, past what I already know; a weapon, of which Antagonist may be; and the assistance of an Author. I want you to find me one of these things, and confirm it will be of use.”- 111859 replies

Rebus chuckled. “The formality is both well put together and unnecessary. I can make the price be harmful neither primarily or secondarily - to have it be neither harm nor something that would directly cause harm.”- 111859 replies

“If but one of the characters stands against me, I will need to strive against them. Invention watched the explosion, feeling helpless. The power, though, was… interested. Not in the destruction, but in the audacity, the creativity, such an action represented. Alph was terrifyingly unpredictable and alarmingly clever, but Virtuosity was less a problem. There were other reasons too - considering many options and many factors, Invention left Bit open to the ravages of the Invested supernova. It was barren, after all, and would be unharmed. The “barren” planet of Bit spun slowly (though for a planet it was fast, its day the same as that of Yolen’s), dust of blue-green metal (for that is the color of Laykium) beginning to form a line at the terminator. As the day went on, the dust followed the sunset and sunrise, brushing across the arid surface of the planet. The line grew thicker, any Laykium it passed joining the rotation. And Invention marveled at what their creation had done, beginning to fill with great excitement.

I want to see what it tries, honestly - somehow it is growing on me. Rebus’s utility fog locked together into a sort of bubble, then expanded, causing a tremendous inrush of wind through the one opening. Any phantoms that escaped were picked off by more spears of utility fog, or laser beams they fired when even the range they had was exceeded. Rebus’s futuristic boots briefly loosened, but locked back together after a mere moment. Rebus nodded slowly. “If you advocate the same for Cypher, my conscience, if the tables are turned, I would accept.” It was a bet - if Rebus lost the duel, he would have to give up Antagonist. I shall note your pleading influenced me, Erryin. Nope. I thought it was a portal to BftS.- 111859 replies

Rebus blinked, having expected something quite different. He filed the design away, and had almost all the nanomachines there self destruct. Almost all. As for Authors, Rebus wanted them a little angry, but not too much. He was Antagonist, after all.- 111859 replies

“I win.” Rebus smiled in triumph, the smallest bit of sorrow in his eyes. “As promised, I shall prevent Parasite from abuse. Shall you fade from existence, or am I to kill you? I shall miss you, I think. We were friends, once.” I wonder what the Horror of Mischief regrets… And what tricks the two still have up their sleeves. Rebus seemed to explode, spikes of utility fog erupting from the air and skewering the phantoms. Rebus held the tiny crystal of Mordite in reserve, waiting to see if the phantoms would die. Very subtle. Rebus thought, directing the nanomachines to fully examine the machine. He supposed he had not taken any hint less overt.- 111859 replies

Oh no. Oh no. Rebus smiled, and spread his mind out over the nanomachines, both increasing his metal capacity and making it difficult to target the nanomachines without breaking Parisite's rules. "If you weren't trying to kill me, I would like you." he said, then applied all the extra mental processing to her nanomachines, increasing in capacity with every success. Rebus was on two levels, one still trapped in terrible limbo while the other - an emulation of his personality - continued to be present. He waited, both versions of him patent and resolute. Fun! Good thing you have to do the first two trials to get the this point, or there would be some really big problems. Remind me what the sprite was? Are you referring to Mischief?- 111859 replies

So were the personality emulations of the utility fog. They chittered among themselves, glad that having though about thinking about pretzels hadn't gotten them caught.- 111859 replies

Rebus's utility fog stuck around, hoping Lezterp would not notice. Maybe? Isn't the worry that Yeah. The same thing they're trying to do to him he's doing to them, pelting them with sheer determination and refusal to break.- 111859 replies

The mistcorn, since it is corn, doesn't really react. Plant and human timescales are very different. A-pewter, actually. Fullcorn is a far more alarming prospect. Wait a minute, isn't that me? Well, I was going to eat the mistcorn too, so I wouldn't be too mad.

Rebus apologized for the confusion, and looked with interest at the mention of iritSp. Rebus was nowhere. Rebus did nothing. Rebus tried to- Rebus was nowhere. Rebus scoffed. But that was forgotten. Rebus was nowhere. "This isn't-" Rebus was nowhere. "-really-" Rebus was nowhere. "-your mind." Rebus was nowhere. Information, possibilities of action, spread out before him. And then his Author wrote nothing. "Not true-" Rebus was nowhere. Rebus did everything. Rebus, slowly, did only one thing. It was written. And the memories faded. Lingering echoes, though flickered still. Rebus watched Bat torture Symbol, watched himself beg Fate for help - the only time he had really been without a plan. He brushed them aside, his mind leaping into the phantoms, slamming them with sheer will, unwillingness to break. The memories flared back up, and Rebus was nowhere. And then he really was. Rebus altered his mind to deal with what it means to be continually trapped in my imagination, unable to do anything permanent. Of course, even then it's a terrible idea to telepathically connect to the embodiment to Misery. Rebus laughed. She had done exactly what he expected. And so he bridged the gap to her mind, linking the two of them together. Yeah - you could specify destination if you wanted, but any attempt to interact outside the Thread would have to be outside the thread. Rebus watched, legitimately interested by Taeidin's powers. Bacon the Bard has it, it think - it's also in Xino's blog, under Lost Pages. This was true. It was quite large now, and should one have made a map it would clearly be pretzel-shaped.- 111859 replies

Rebus, who could see in all directions via nanotech cameras tethered to his mind, saw the Horror quite quickly. Taking a guess, Rebus took his utility fog and altered the molecular composition of the cooking pan’s handle, making it slippery enough to be annoying, but not enough to be suspicious.- 111859 replies
