Rebus doesn’t want that, so he stalls. “Antimatter is always useful! Except apparently for alarming Narrators, so probably it’s useless against anything on their tier level. Do you want a cough drop? You sound like you need one, Faust. Can I call you that?” Then he realizes a loophole. “You ask for my faith in your abilities? If that’s your condition, I accept! If there’s other things, I would like full disclosure and no unrevealed tricks. Legal battle with exact words is fine, but we can’t say there were secret conditions or break the deal. And I’d like to actually know what you’re offering, and what this thing you seek is.” @Ookla the Cookie Collector Template. Template sends back. I think I did something. Am I supposed to be able to talk like this?- 111861 replies

Agreed, but also this particular place to ask that question is so ironic. I think there is a feature suggestion thread somewhere.

Template continues looking out the window, because Tam is still invisible. “Why did I not know my name before, do you think?” they ask nobody in particular. Rebus begins to laugh. “Finally… What can you do for me, and what do you want in return? I’ve been needing an edge, and something to do. I’ve got antimatter…”- 111861 replies

Owen was the name for the identity they were given. It would still work to refer to them, especially since they aren’t detail-less, but they had been made to forget the name Template and have now remembered. Template continues to look out the window, but speaks. “I have a name. This is interesting. Why did I not know it before?”- 111861 replies

The first question is a secret (mostly because I’m not entirely sure, although this has always been intended). Template was turned into Owen for nefarious purposes, but it wore off, which is not a thing that is supposed to happen. They now have no identity other than yellow eyes, good eyesight, freckles, and a cockroach in their shoe, but someone could easily give them a new identity.- 111861 replies

Rebus tried to swear, but beeped instead. Why did everything he tried to do get stopped! Pond had even been really cool even without it going wrong. Owen, most personality gone, continued to stare out the window. My first thought was rather odd there. The cockroach has not been turned into a shoe, correct? Owen sees something in his shoe, but doesn’t care. They slips back farther, personality and identity puffing away. Template gets worryingly close to absorbing the Narration, but instead goes back to looking out the window.- 111861 replies

Did Lady Bug press them quickly? Because that could be bad… Operating under that assumption, I give you Rebus’s irresponsible firework show made much much worse. Upon the first press of the portals button, fireworks streak into the air, flying through - you guessed it - portals at regular intervals, then reappearing elsewhere. When the first one goes off, the glowing lines sent out by the explosion are intercepted and sent inwards from a circle around the initial burst. Then a blinding light comes from the sky. The containment of the portal to a star fluctuates, sending out blinding beams of light in different patterns. The light that comes off of the superheated air from those beams warms the spectator, and some temperature control is set up by the utility fog. Then, the next portal rockets are set up. Caught in a beam of solar radiation, several detonate early. But nothing truly problematic happens until one explodes on schedule. In order for the flares from that explosion to be sent back the other way, a portal is opened. Unfortunately, it is a portal inside the star containment. The blinding light goes from metaphorically blinding to actually blinding as a gout of plasma is released from the portal. Noting containment loss, the star connection is shut down and the plasma vented into space. All would be well, except for one thing: Lady Bug had pressed star several times. A new portal to a star opens soon after, and more portal enhanced fireworks are detonated early. The utility fog goes to fully mirrored as a beam of sunlight is accidentally redirected at the spectators. Owen, turned away from Beosta, notices movement in the reflections of things. He’s too enthralled by the sky to care, however. “The stars. I thought they were beautiful before, but I had no idea.” Rebus tries to show up and tell Beosta to stab Owen, but is stopped by Authorial authority. He keeps fuming, trying to think of something he can do. I could sabotage the fireworks… Not by going over, but just by sending destructive thoughts to my Author.- 111861 replies

Your room is a triangle, for some reason. If you picked the middle door, you come out of the point, if you picked a side door, it’s in the actual side of the triangle. And of course, it’s made from the same fabric-like materials and the ceiling is glowing softly. There’s a bed on one wall, and a desk on another.

Dr. Warren notices the faked smile but realizes that Kal doesn’t actually know her. Maybe he’d be more willing to talk once they knew each other better. Dr. Warren leads him down the stairs, through a hallway, and into a small room with a few chairs. She pulls one up for each of them. “I have a couple technicians setting up actual equipment, but for now I can answer any questions you have, and I’d be glad to hear anything you’d like to talk about. It might be ordinary for you, but your daily life may be quite important.”

We both mutually jumped to conclusions, and I’m glad we could explain our actions. Rebus glowers as yet another forbiddance is pronounced by his Author. At least this one would end if the Emperor contacted him voluntarily, unlike the whole Template thing. @oOklA thE shInyYyy @Ookla the Bacon, Rebus crackles out of existence to sulk, leaving behind a trove of now uncontrolled advanced nanotechnology. Nothing bad seems to have happened yet, though, and the firework panel is still there…- 111861 replies

I wasn’t intending to be rude to you, but I can see how I can off the way. It’s one of the issues with method acting; when I see things from my character’s perspective it’s hard to remember there’s a person behind them. You’ve actually been doing quite well at portraying the Emperor as someone so used to getting his way, he lashes out when he doesn’t. I should have put a disclaimer beforehand that Rebus is speaking on his “own”, not as my direct mouthpiece. Again, my method acting went overboard and I was - still am, actually - tired and stressed from homework when I wrote that. As for the godmodding, I’ve done it myself and thought a reminder would be helpful, but I phrased it badly and should have done it completely out of character. I honestly forget PMs are a thing sometimes, so I rarely consider them. Anyway, Rebus is kind of a jerk and I can make him leave the Emperor alone if you want. Alternatively, he’d be perfectly willing to have the passive aggressivity fight, assuming there are no hard feelings out of character. It might be interesting to push him off the rails and see where it goes, honestly. The plot line you’re going towards sounds interesting as well - I do have a practically invincible monster sitting in a field because it can’t find the person it’s supposed to be killing. Perhaps the Emperor could bargain with it, and I could showcase a more civil interaction. Although I think the trial should come first.- 111861 replies

“You really don’t like go-betweens, do you? Although in this case that’s justified, as I laced the letter with Vonn Neumann machines. If you’d like to make friendly assassination attempts a tradition, I can look for something that kills you with telepathy.” He shrugs. “Regardless, the letter laid out how Narraters are actually of chaotic creation, meaning you’d need a good reason to get me to fight the Maelstrom or whatever. Also was going to note that being rude is rude, as is trying to control another’s reactions to something by writing what they do - it’s known as godmodding, and is a common problem. But yeah, a serous character who acts slightly like a jerk should not be your face character, at least not here. It doesn’t match in tone, although villains and antiheroes do have a place here.”- 111861 replies

Owen shrugs, his face relatively neutral. “Okay.” Rebus waves. “Maybe I take a page from your book and add some pyrotechnics to my teleportations.” Owen snaps to your Narration instantly, his identity rearranging around the changes. “Whoa.” he breathes, as the enhanced hearing becomes enhanced sight.- 111861 replies

Owen visualizes more cookies, but nothing happens. “What makes someone become a Narrator?” Rebus laughs and hits a button labeled “electrolaser”. Nine glowing streaks fly out into the sky as the music quiets. It swells dramatically again as the glowing dots assemble and lightning crackles between them. “TLT” is written in the sky in electricity, and crack of thunder rings out. Smaller, ordinary explosions write “light show, by Rebus” in smaller letters below it. Rebus smirks and gestures to a row of buttons. “I’ll let you pick the next sequence.” The five buttons say “boring”, “pond”, “portals”, “star”, and “multi-stage”, respectively. A larger button below the row says finale. Owen frowns back, wondering what he could have done to cause such a reaction.- 111861 replies
