    Cole, meanwhile, slept. He was dreaming: the Duke, his armor bloody, ate long, tangled noodles. Cole ran up to kill him, but before he could strike, the Duke and his meal turned to stone. Freedom, Gronk, the Earl, and a guitar cowered as a man made from sand walked forward, balancing a bottle of wine on his head to show he was a spirit. He hugged Cole, whispering a message in a language Cole didn’t understand. @Ookla the Dragonslayer

    Template lays down on the sand as well, not knowing about the telepathic conversation. “This is comfortable. Where do you think sand comes from?”

    For a brief moment the fact that light from Adtae’s sun prevents formation of shadows makes perfect sense, explaining where the energy comes from. Then Dr. Warren thinks about it too much and is bewildered again. She also makes Adtae create a paper-thing shadow, then tries to use the overlap to pass it through things, and attempts to bend it.

    Over the next hour or so, Dr. Warren has Adtae try creating shadow in different light conditions (infrared, ultraviolet, various light sources), tests the tensile strength and other physical properties of shadow, and interview Adtae more. She follows up on any interesting discoveries and is willing to answer any questions he has.

    “Personality wise - my Author’s personality is influencing how I think and act. On top of me not getting anything interesting to do, I’m being intermittently mind controlled.” You could - it would still kill you, I think - but perpetual motion machines are really significant. You’d also have radiation shielding in other circumstances, such as space travel. But yes, if there is such a lord of color, they’d cause problems and be rather OP.

    “Warmth from a fire is a form of light, with a color most people cannot see. But this is Author bleedover talking, and I’m not sure you care either.” I wonder if there is a gamma lord of color. And converting infrared into ordinary color can reverse entropy and prevent waste heat.

    Rebus concedes the point, noting that it’s been a while. “Do you turn heat signatures or radio waves to visible red?” he asks, turning on his antimatter-annihilation lighter for a reference.

    Somewhat disappointed, she tries to pass the dagger through the table.

    Rebus’s nanotechnology quickly replaces everything colorchanged with molecules from the air, collecting the red atoms and storing them for later shenanigans. “Interesting… Red actually has higher energy, you know. Or maybe it doesn’t - I don’t remember. Shall we go set something on fire?”

    Confident her gloves will prevent electrocution, she passes the dagger through the tesla coil induced lightning.

    Rebus protests to the description that his metamaterials put the light back again, making it look like nothing happened. “So my memory was correct. Do you need anything? What would happen if a whale swallowed you whole?” Rebus and Jilu are standing on a futuristic watercraft in the ocean, yielding some ominous meaning to the question.

    Rebus nods. “For one thing, I thought you made the Notblades from Madness’s powers, and for another I’m probably insane and powerful enough. If I’m Madnessed, I’ll probably only be able to fight your characters, which will be boring.” He turns to Jilu, the change of color corrected through metamaterials. “Finally something to do. Do you need any explosives? And you aren’t a rabbit, correct?”

    Rebus nods. “Of course I’m a Narrator. I had the drone, remember? But you know as well as I that me knowing something my Author doesn’t results in an informed ability, which thus makes it hard for me to prepare for fighting Ennulers.”

    The fear is justified, I think. I’d like to do something about it, though. I’ll have to counter them at both power level and plot level, if I- he cuts off. Don’t want to lay the foreshadowing on too thickly. As for Bat, that’s probably good, character-wise. But I think I need aid from Authors in order to fight them. Did I tell you something came to me for a Faustian bargain and I annoyed it away by accident? I think the Thread is trying to stop me from having fun.

    Rebus, listening, wonders how that would be different from an ordinary sword. He’s calmed down a bit, or at least seems to have. Maybe I can get myself one of those - depending upon how likely the Scribe is to no-sell me otherwise. Speaking of which, would you happen to know anything about Ennullers. Template thanks Tam, then looks around more critically at the beach. Perhaps there’ll be some aforementioned adventure…

    Fill projectiles or a turbine with many speck of dust, then propel them to either generate energy or be a railgun. Edit (ninjas!): place things you need perfect knowledge of on the notebook’s pages. Alternatively, if you only know the words written on it, you can get unblockable communication, using stamps or an actual typewriter to speed up the process. You are a wonderful electrical conductor, causing nearby electricity to ground to you through the air, so much better than even wires you are. You can turn the power on and off, but you lack any required secondary powers.

    Dr. Warren is shocked (no pun intended). “You said you were incorporeal, but if you’re unaffected by electromagnetism, what are you made of?”

    The technician comes back with a small table, then sets it up and places a device on it. There’s a base with a cord and two metal spires, on with a ball on the end. “I would not get too near, unless you’re certain this is Andarik.” Dr. Warren cautions. “The light this device makes is rather dangerous.” She turns it on, and a small arc of electricity snaps between the two spires with a buzz, changing shape rapidly.

    She shrugs. “It doesn’t answer my question, but it’s useful information nonetheless. You say you were made?” She turns to a technician. “Do we have a tesla coil around somewhere?”

    Template flickers back to being Owen for a moment. “I was - but someone made me Owen. My real name is apparently Template.”

    Template nods. “It is quite nice. Did I introduce myself to you?”
  25. DragonHeir
    She nods. “If you can describe what a soul is, I would be very interested. It’s likely a substance intrinsic to your species; we may know of it non-biologically.”
