  1. Jared looked around, apparently studying the walls.
  2. "It was last year. Don't say sorry. Please."
  3. He wanted to. Oh, he wanted to. Maybe...in a way, he could. But not while looking at her. He stared at his hands again. "Isa saw our dad get killed."
  4. He looked at her incredulously. "Nothing can change what happened." He shut out the images he could feel trying to break into his mind.
  5. "No," he said. Wasn't it obvious? He knew people with mental stuff. It wasn't something you just got healed from by taking meds for a week.
  6. He shrugged, not speaking.
  7. Jared relented, regulating his breathing a bit more. He pulled his knee away though, sinking into his sweatshirt. "I'm fine."
  8. Yeah. Ok. He pressed his back against the chair. I'm an idiot. I need to stop. He breathed softly, trying to make it seem like he had plenty of air.
  9. "That's fine," Jared said instinctively. "Sorry, I..." The corners of the room were closing in on him..."Sorry."
  10. Oh. "I..don't think I can tell you." Minus the memories, there would be some slight...uh...legal issues...
  11. "What do you mean...?"
  12. Jared looked at her strangely. "I...I don't know."
  13. Jared shook his head. "You talked to my sister on the phone. Remember?"
  14. Jared tried to meet her eyes, but ended up looking at his hands again. He pulled his sleeves even lower so he could only see the tips of his fingers.
  15. Isa's brows drew together. "You can talk to me, too, right? After?"
  16. Jared nodded uneasily. "Ok..."
  17. Jared's eyes darted around. He let out a slow breath. "who would sit with her?" he asked carefully. Isa looked confused. He gave her a small smile.
  18. Isa looked at Jared helplessly. I should tell her...but Isa doesn't even know all of it.... Jared crossed his arms protectively over his chest. We should leave. "yes...you should..." If the voice wanted him to do it...he definitely should not. "We...both have PTSD," he muttered. "I think. I looked it up...? I'm not sure."
  19. Isa shook her head. "I, I don't want to. It's gone now but if I drew it it would come back."
  20. Jared glanced at Isa. We can't tell her. I'd go to jail and Isa would end up in foster care or something. He could feel his palms burning again. Like they had when he'd-- "Jared was, was, he looked like a, a monster? But it also wasn't a monster because he also looked like my dad," Isa blurted out.
  21. "I don't have one." He glanced at Isa, concerned. He turned out his pockets to show Iris.
  22. Isa looked up at her. "This is my brother Jared." She fiddled a bit more, then said, quietly, "he has a knife in his pocket. I can see it."
  23. Isa looked at the basket, then back at Jared. He nodded at her, so she took out a Rubik's cube and started aimlessly twisting it.
