I recently read The Name of the Wind for the first time. It was quite good, although I had the problem that my mind was frequently running a comparison between it and Elantris (first published books) and between it and Final Empire (firsts of trilogies). This means that I kept thinking that it's good, but not Sanderson-level (particularly when Final Empire was in mind). But I suspect that's going to be the way with any non-Sanderson books I read. TNotW struck me as a combination of early TEotW (WoT), early in the Harry Potter series, middle Enders Game (book not series), and perhaps a little of the beginning of FE. I do want to read the rest of the trilogy, although I've not become obsessed, so I'm inclined to wait until the last book comes out (or is at least close) ere I read Wise Man's Fear. My instinct in general is to spend almost all my reading time rereading Sanderson's Cosmere books. But sometimes I wonder if I should read more authors' books, despite the inevitable mental comparisons. I read this thread and saw many books mentioned, some quite frequently (which I count in their favor). As some background on what I've read: I really like WoT (in fact, it's the only thing that makes me not say Sanderson is the best author in the history of the universe, although I've never reread WoT, so I'm foggy on a lot of details). When I was younger I really liked the Redwall books, and still like them as simple, relatively straightforward stories. Similar with Harry Potter, which has the benefits of being a longer continuous series and of being something that you can talk about it with nearly anyone. The Twilight series was entertaining fluff, and is a good source for a joke on occasion regarding sparkling or the lack thereof. I've read all but the last of the Inheritance Cycle, and I do intend to read the last one (like most people here, I find the series moderate, but I do want to know the ending). I have read Hobbit and LotR, which are both good (although, as with most things, not as good as Sanderson). I've read much more Fantasy than SF, but I have read and liked the Ender and Bean quartets. It's been long enough since I've read them that the details are vague, but I do remember that my favorite would have made me one of the seven. The next book I read will be Warbreaker (it'll only my first reread of that). I would like to reread Way of Kings, but a friend has my copy at the moment, and I'll only start if I know I can finish before a semester begins. My questions to you are: 1) Should I read something not by Sanderson, and 2) If so, what?

Forgive the mild thread necromancy, but I wanted to mention that Scadrial is not devoid of 10: The Well fills every 1024 years, which means every 210 years. Whether that 10 is significant, I don't know (but this is Brandon Sanderson, so what are the odds it isn't to some extent significant). Also, on Nalthis, I don't think we can really count on numerical significance of Heightenings - it's a spectrum varying by each Breath, and the heightenings are generally points at which something becomes complete. Perfect pitch does not "turn on" at the second heightening, it probably just stops improving (I wonder if there are musicians in world who gather Breaths specifically for that...or who give them up to preserve their sanity). The heightenings are probably just convenient points to mark by. With metals, there is iron, there is steel, there could be impure iron or steel, but there is nothing partway between. With Breath there is a scale of practically infinitely small increments (remember that some Breaths are stronger or weaker than others, so they aren't confined to whole number Breath counts). We also don't know what might come above the tenth heightening - no one has ever acquired that many Breaths. There might be other Heightenings with new abilities (drawing color out to the point of transparency, drawing people's Breaths out against their will, domesticating Nightblood, etc.).

Was your experiment, perchance, on the effects of being slapped? With yourself as one of the participants? That could explain such a result.

So your citation is a secret document to which you have access (perhaps only Heroes of Ages have access), and which you could Ruin - ahem - change in the process of copy/pasting? I guess I'll take your word for it.

Watch out, dudes. That's not a very well cited quote, Chaos. Why should I trust its validity?

Progress on Mistborn Movie, plus other things
Musicspren commented on Zas678's article in Brandon and Book News
@Teegs: You're not the only one. I think the Mistborn trilogy is the best complete series I've read. I also think it would be terrible as movies. If it were broken up into a few films per book, it could be better, but never good. Brandon's viewpoint writing (which is wonderful) can't come across in a film without a lot of voiceovers (far more than would be practical), and the elegance of Allomancy (and Feruchemy) could not be conveyed in that medium. -
It's also worth mentioning (to give credit where it is due) that Peter Ahlstrom's Rep/post ratio is 44%. I'm not sure who has/had 39%.
-
I would like to announce that 80% > 39%.

Literally dying? Completely literally? The Hero of Ages is (literally) dying? Clearly both Kelsier and Moiraine have been victorious...over Chaos! And yes, that was indeed amazing, and I laughed through basically the whole "fight." Something that might make them more equal in a fight (the sort where they actually try to kill each other), depending on how their magic systems interacted, is if copper shielded Kelsier from the One Power (just as it shields the one burning it from emotional allomancy). That's somewhat of a long shot, but if it worked, it could make attacking Kelsier like attacking Mat + Medallion. And Kelsier would have a lot more attacking ability than Mat.

And with that, you are upvoted into Shardhood again. Ruin could change anything not written in metal, and Vin et al. still defeated... Wait. That's it. I inscribe these upvotes in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted

Have you tried pronouncing Spikcracy? I grant its more technically correct, but it feels strange to say. And no, I mean the staff members with spikes. Didn't you know that Admins have spikes?
-
Okay, I just gave you an upvote for Adonalsium Endowment Enterprises, so you are a little bit closer to being a Shard again. Perhaps we should form Reputation Enterprises. All new recruits have to do is upvote the founders' opening posts (those would be our posts), and then the founders would both give each new recruit's first post an upvote (a total of 2). Everyone would benefit...particularly us. Gather enough upvotes and we might could even challenge the Spikocracy currently in power.

I heard hemalurgy was bad

This page will give you the top 20 reputation counts; any with a reputation of 128 or higher are Shards (until Zas or Chaos reaches the next level, that is). The current other Shards are Zas, Chaos, KChan, Eerongal, and CrazyRioter. I think FeatherWriter and Silus also were when being a Shard required a reputation of 100.
-
I would like to announce that I have ascended to be the sixth Shard (using the new reputation requirements - I think one or two others were Shards before it was changed, so I may actually be the eighth Shard).

I hope some form is made for a Mac; that would be my only option for playing it. Congratulations to Eliza Fathvell for now having a notable ancestor!

Limebaby aged quickly. So quickly, in fact, that within a few years, he became Limeman, going by the alias "Zas." Some whispered that he had secretly found an atiummind and was filling it, making his body age to adulthood. Others whispered that one so young could not possess so many upvotes.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you usually have the highest count. Nothing at all.

Or perhaps even ascension.

smelled like atium

The Well Of Ascension Chapters 57-59+Epilogue
Musicspren commented on Child Bahkbar's blog entry in First time reading The Well Of Ascension
I've looked at some of your posts and restraining myself from posting spoilers. When you said I wanted to tell you that it should. In fact, it does even more the second time reading, when you know the implications. And I will tell you that the Hero of Ages is, indeed, even better than the Well of Ascension. -

Although it doesn't show up often, I occasionally have Type-Writing - the ability to make typing mistakes while writing. I rarely have to write very much by hand (exams with essay questions are the primary cause), but when I am writing quickly without thinking about how I'm writing, I make mistakes that would come from using the right finger on the wrong hand (switching "s" and "l," for instance), or using the wrong letter that the same finger would press. It's odd, because I don't think of typing while I'm writing, but I've caught myself making the same mistakes. This one's probably common around here, but Metal Memory - the ability to recite the 16 Allomantic metals in order in under 5 seconds (It takes a bit longer if I have to follow a different order, however). All of the misting and ferring names are memorized, as are the allomantic and feruchemical abilities.
