    I just showed up here and haven’t read that before. But thank you. On both accounts.

One of my other lives, the first leader killed me three times, and between the deaths he captured and tortured me, trying to force me to be a gladiator. That world’s magic was heavily dependent on balance of life and death.” (The magic system was based on AtLA but also with life and death elements) “The AEE was such a threat that every living creature in that world chose a side and a major battle was fought. So many died that that world fell out of time and space. Time doesn’t pass, wind doesn’t blow, and if any soul is unfortunate enough to find their way there, not only is it near impossible to leave, it’s impossible to die there. You’re just stuck in limbo, essentially forever.”

    She QUICKLY covered his mouth. “Not. Another. Word. Ears everywhere,” she whispered.

    I make my own sandwich. A better sandwich. It is a Rueben. I eat my sandwich with a pickle spear and sweet potato fries.

    “When I was little… my parents had this dog. My dad had found it as a stray and was on his way to get food for it, when the dog started running. He chased after it and found, in his words, ‘the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen’. He said that to her and she said ‘Isn’t that lucky!’ He, ah, named the dog Lucky. “By the time I was born the dog was really old. When these memories came back, one of the first was a really blurry one of me riding it like a horse.” She laughed sadly. “We all loved that dog. ”One night I woke up, really thirsty. I was a little younger than Lily at the time. I went to get a drink, and my dad was holding Lucky and crying. Lucky was whimpering and Mom was rubbing Dad’s back. I went up to Lucky’s face and he started licking me…” She put a hand over her eyes. “After a little bit, Dad left with Lucky. He was still crying. He said Lucky hurt, and he was going to make him stop hurting. He got back about an hour later, without Lucky. He was still crying when he came back home. I remember he picked me up and I slept between him and my mom that night.” She shook her head. “Sorry. That… I don’t know. I just couldn’t hold it in.”

    “Yeah. Sure.” She eyed him, hand still on the Redspine. Then something seemed to flash over her eyes, and she looked away from everyone.

    She placed a hand on his side and rubbed back and forth.

    I will lose you, eventually, one way or another. That’s how life works. It takes more than it gives. She looked away from him and sat down.
