Eddie laughs. “Put those away, Lil. You’re a terrible shot.” She cocks her own guns. “I’m always ready.”

Eddie shrugged. “I don’t…I mean…I don’t know if I’m…like, in love with Lil…she’s my best friend, mate, that’s all. Not that’s all, I mean, best friends are important, but I…I don’t…I…” Eddie flushed and ran a hand through her hair. “Look, mate, she’s always had my back. She cares. And that’s worth a lot, you know?” Eddie smiles back.

“No!” She says back. “No. No, no, no. I don’t want to join your little club, I don’t want to go on a quest, and I definitely don’t want to be sacrificed to your goddess. We good?”

Eddie shakes her fist at the sky. “You’re not funny, Eras! This isn’t funny!”

Ignoring both Lil and her father, Eddie looks straight at the ghost. “I’m going to fall in love. I’m going to go home. I’m going to let the world mind its own business and I’ll mind mine.”

Eddie glances at Lil, then flushes. “Why do you even want to know? How does this affect anything?”

Eddie blinks, like she’s never thought about it before. “I’d live my life.” Eddie pulls her hand out of Lilyana’s and folds her arms. “If that’s how you protect me then I don’t want it.”

“No,” Eddie says firmly. “She does not, and she never has, and she never will.” “You don’t either, father.”

Eddie squeezes her hand tighter, then turns and glares at the ghost. “Look, mate, I don’t know what to tell you. She’s my aunt, right? And we aren’t exactly one big happy family. Athena’s a monster. She eats souls, feeds on them, and once she gets an idea in her head she can’t let it go. And she wants my soul. I don’t know why so many other people are involved, apparently something bad will happen when I die; if not for all of them, she probably would’ve got to me years ago. That enough for you?”
