    “Yeah,” Eddie says, “I can tell.” She gestures at the pool of red that’s spreading around her.

    The boy curses his luck. “I knew I shouldn’t have taken this job. Look, man, there’s no food. I’m sorry.” Eddie groggily starts to sit up, but falls back, too weak. “Hey, Princess,” she says. “Ouch.”

    Astrin slides down Lasina’s back. “Mm…lovely,” he says.

    A boy in a uniform, who looks incredibly bored, says, “sorry, no snacks. The train will be stopping soon, though.”

    A small pattern that has been hidden on Lasina’s skirt moves up to her shoulder. “I’m Astrin,” it says.

    “I think…” Eddie says, voice slurred, “I think…I might be…a bit injured.” She passes out.

    Eddie nodded. “Yeah,” she gasped. “Yeah. That’d be good.” Blood is soaking the snow around her. “I…uh…I don’t think I can walk.”

    Eddie leans against a tree, gasping.

    Lasina raised a hand. “I’m a lightweaver.”

    Eddie screams again, trying desperately to pull herself away.

    Eddie screams as one of her legs is crushed.
