  1. Tal’s gaze softened. “Do you want to die that badly?”
  2. “What?” Tal looked up, confused. “Why didn’t I…I don’t know. It wasn’t me, I’m not going to kill you, I pro—” A faint whisper fluttered through his mind. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Ace’s words, from a time he wished he could forget. “I won’t.”
  3. It doesn’t work.
  4. “I’m sorry,” Tal murmured. He was sitting on a chair, staring into nothing. I hurt so many people…
  5. “I’m Annie,” the girl said, and suddenly there was a flood of children surrounding him, saying names and laughing and talking over each other.
  6. The chain puffed away. “Will you hear us, first?” The girl looked up, eyes wide. “Will you remember us?”
  7. “They didn’t let us choose,” the girl whispered. “I wanted…” she shook her head. “You choose. And you keep your choice, and make everyone else choose, too.” The outlines are almost like the ghosts of objects that once were.
  8. It’s impossible to tell.
  9. Tal was guiding several patients to the med wing. His face was completely blank.
  10. It’s dark, and smells of rot…but the blue outlines show a small bed, a dresser, a bookshelf, and toys. It seems to be a perfectly ordinary room for a little boy. “I know,” the girl said sadly. “I wanted you to be evil.”
  11. Something strange happens. The wooden door opens, but the blue one doesn’t. His hand goes through the blue one…but the rest of him doesn’t.
  12. “It looks like only these two were affected.” Tal continued walking past the worst of the fires, and as he passed the died down. Ace…how did you live with this? How did you live with me? And how am I supposed to live without you?
  13. “You hear, and you speak, but you don’t listen.”
  14. “Find people who are injured, put out fires…protect them.” “Thank you,” Tal said quietly. He closed his eyes, and several more fires went out.
  15. “Don’t ignore me,” the girl said, sounding cold, not petulant.
  16. “Wha-no!” “I’m so sorry,” Tal said again. “We need to put out the fires now. Any questions you have, I’ll answer when the people are safe, okay?”
  17. Tal looked around desperately. “I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry,” he whispered. His breath was coming faster, his heart pounding…how did he put it out? “I’m so sorry…”
  18. The girl hummed softly, slowly walking away. Sharpo is yanked after her by the chain, much harder than should have been possible. “They never stop hurting us.”
  19. He turned. “Terribly sorry,” he murmured, eyes closed, “but I’ll have to destroy you later…my host is unfortunately stubborn…” Then Tal’s eyes snapped open. He gasped.
  20. The woman closed the door behind him. “No…” the girl said sadly. “But we have suffered too much to forgive you. And you—they—have suffered too much to forgive us…and so it will always repeat.”
