“I…I don’t know,” Tal said quietly. “I’d rather it didn’t.” “The Clinic will be fine,” Tal said firmly. “You don’t need to worry unless something happens to Calano or Emma. I’m not important to its well-being.”

He let out a quiet sigh. “I want to live. Maybe it’s selfish, but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in here, unsure when it’ll break through or how many people it’s killing while I’m hiding. I did that before and it…it was a mistake.” “If you’re willing, we figure out how to kill this…creature.”

“Joe,” the woman says. “O-oh, I haven’t thought about him in a while.”

“Oh, well…” the woman launches into a story about a brother, a dog, and a torn pair of breeches.

“Hmm, I’m not quite sure…” the woman frowned. “I think there’s a tower, but I can’t quite do stairs anymore…why can’t I remember, dearie?”

Tal nods. “You have no reason to trust me.” Tal shrugged. “As long as I’m in here I can’t hurt you. Probably.”

Tal glances over. “You don’t have to hide,” he says quietly. “I’m not going to hurt you. Not here, at least.”

“What a pretty name,” the woman murmurs.

“Oh, I’ll do whatever makes you happy. What did you say your name was?”

“Oh, all right.”

Tal didn’t notice, just kept walking, walking, walking, down to the basement, into a magic-restricting cell. The pounding headache returned, but this time he didn’t pass out. So he closed his eyes and started to think. It was time to defeat this parasite, once and for all.

“Oh, thank you!!” Tears filled the old woman’s eyes. “My papi built it.”

Tal stepped quickly out of the room and began walking to the basement. I need to get away…I can’t let them get hurt…

Tal stiffened. Ace… Ace is dead. I can’t let myself care… If they get close, we’ll destroy them. I’m so tired of being alone… It’s safer if they hate us. We’d best be on our way, then.

“S-sorry,” Tal muttered, not sounding sorry at all. He backed out of the room. @Spark of Hope

“What are you holding, dearie?” The woman asks. “I can’t see very well.” She coughs raggedly. “Should I know what a gamemaker is?”

“You?” Tal scoffed. “Why would I want you to come?” He winced. “I need to-I need to get away, or this-this will get worse.”

Tal nodded, not saying anything for a long moment. Then he stood up abruptly. “I need to go,” he said.

The woman frowned. “O-okay? I don’t lie,” she said, smiling weakly.

The woman nods as he leaves. Then, ever so slowly, she opens the door to the boy’s bedroom and steps inside. She kneels next to the bed and does not move.
