For sure. It was a stark reminder for me that when it comes to the bible and it's application in religion, it is important to realize that what you are reading is not the original text. Not every word can or should be taken as a perfect reflection of the intention of the original author or the religion that the text represents. It likely is at the core of a lot of the steadfast hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community from Christians. Much of the time, if you ask one of them why they believe being gay is a sin, the answer is because it's in the bible. These people aren't aware that not only did the word not get translated that way until 1946, but the context of the original word is lost and the context of the word it was translate to has changed. CONTEXT IS KEY. That's how I see it, anyway. -

It's on Netflix, if you want to. The main thing is, the word "homosexual" didn't actually appear in the bible until one translation in 1946. Specifically one word has an exact meaning and connotation that isn't entirely known. Even at the time there were some people pointing out that it was an error to include. It became especially problematic when other editions of the bible did the same, and ESPECIALLY because that the time homosexuality was associated with child predators and was generally viewed in nasty ways. Really interesting stuff. -

You are very welcome. Also, I saw a pretty fascinating documentary recently about how the word "homosexual" got into the bible in all those nasty places. It's called "1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture." Very cool. Yeah, I think I agree on the Hrathen thing. I'm glad I helped! I probably have the easiest LQBTQ+ identity, so at least I can help people who have a much harder time. *throws glitter* -

Okay. Yeah, I've heard stuff similar to this before, I think. You aren't getting rid of your identity if you end up in a relationship with someone. You don't need to justify your identity by constantly being "between" both sides somehow. You are valid as you are and with whatever choice you might make in a partner in the future, and I'm happy for you if you're finding someone who you're interested in! Sorry, that doesn't seem very helpful, but oh well. I'm sorry that you have that conflict, Cin. That seems like a really hard thing to work through. Yeah, I think Hrathen was a very interesting and well done character, especially in terms of his arc regarding his religion. -

So, in what way do you think it doesn't matter? Because your identity is valid, no matter if you could pass it as straight. Do you just feel like you should ignore one side of it because that would be easier? Sorry I don't mean to jump to conclusions about how you feel, I just hope to understand. Unless you don't want to talk about it, that's fine too. -

Yeah, I've heard that there can be some weirdness around that in general. Is it something you've heard from others, or just something you've thought about? -

Thanks for the agreement, I guess Yeah I've heard really awful stuff about people who grew up knowing that they were gay, trans, etc. but being in an extremely phobic environment they still have an internalized hatred of that part of themselves. It's just awful. And If you're working through anything like that, I'm really sorry. I'm lucky that me and my brother grew up in an environment that mostly lacks explicit homophobia and generally has a lot of support. I'd be happy to listen to that rant when it feels like the right time. -

Yeah... I didn't even know what the word meant for a while, but people would constantly use it as a dumb insult. Also, mildly embarrassing memory, but when I asked one of them what gay meant my initial reaction was "that's weird." Which embarrasses me now but also I think it says a thing or two about heteronormativity and why it's a bad thing. I was fully conditioned to believe that heterosexual was the natural and in fact only way people could be. Seriously, I didn't know what gay MEANT. But I digress. I'm just glad that innocent lack of understanding didn't turn into something much worse. -
