    17 grew more tense, nails digging into the unblemished skin of their crossed arms. Their strange, too perfect appearance really did seem like something designed, fabricated without human irregularities.

    They hesitated. "No... But they don't do it to hurt me. They do it the tests. It's important. It's what I'm supposed to do."

    "I... I don't know. Maybe I will." They glanced at the sword on the ground next to them.

    They looked at her suspiciously. "I don't think you should come."

    "What kinds of words?"

    They frowned. "I don't think the Makers would like that. Anyway, why would you come with me?"

    They made a frustrated grunt. "That's not the point. I have to go back."

    They glanced over at her, then looked away. "I should go back. They must be looking for me by now."

    With a sigh, they sat down and put their head between their hands, first setting the sword down next to them with a soft clunk. Occasionally they looked up to glance between the two hallways exiting the room, as though searching for motion.

    They looked around for an indication of where the ones they had met might be going.

    17 went up onto the dais, looking around for signs of the viruses that had fled.

    They were already well ahead, striding down the tunnel.

    17 watched with a frown. They looked back and were somewhat disappointed to see that the creatures had fled.
