    They didn't reply, refusing to meet her eyes. The man shook his head. "Either way, they need to come with me. They can't be out alone."

    "They are a very troubled young person. What they told you wasn't true, they just think it is."

    They looked confused and distressed. The old man took her hand. She didn't flinch. "We will be going now."

    He narrowed his eyes. "They live with me. Alone."

    "17 is not safe out here. I need to take them home." The old man shook his head. "I'm not affiliated with the Cloud. They won't here anything from me."

    They looked nervous, maybe a bit afraid. He reached them and quickly removed the sword from their hand. "I have to take you back, 17."

    He spotted them. "17!" It was the first time the old man had raised his voice since he appeared. He broke away from the viruses, which were thoroughly cowed by now, heading for them.

    They reached the fight. 17 pulled up short as they saw the old man fighting the viruses.

    They started speeding up.

    "I don't want them to hurt him!"

    "They're attacking him? Why?"

    "If you could dispose of these creatures more permanently, that would be helpful." They ignored her, continuing to stride forward. Flashes of light started to become visible, coming from further down the tunnel.

    They kept going, though they seemed a bit more uncertain than they had been.

    "He says there's a Maker over there, looking for me."

    "Oh." They nervously continued forward toward the noises.

    They hesitated. "Which one?"

    "Okay." They started off in the direction of the buses.

    The old man was holding his own. He regained his feet and calmly fended off the viruses with his cane. They could have been poorly behaved dogs to him with the way he acted now, firmly whacking any that got too close.

    "Yes... They liked me, I think."

    They were looking around, hearing the sounds of the viruses nearby. They started at his voice. "What? Why?"

    The man went down under the onslaught, but none of the attacks truly seemed to harm him. The viruses kept getting shocked and blasted back by the shield. He fought them off with the cane, too, each hit casting light and sparks and damaging the attackers.

    "You've risked all of your friends lives, then? Because you think you know better than me how to take care of 17?"

    He narrowed his eyes. "Now, what was that you just did?"

    The zap hit the shield, causing an explosion of light and white hot sparks that showered the room, briefly burning where they touched skin. The old man stood up with the help of his still glowing cane. He still seemed unexpectedly calm. "Very hasty... You caused an impact that will be detected many miles away. Weren't you trying to hide in these caves?"

    The man was knocked to the ground, but the shell around him affected 209845 too. It felt solid, and it crackled and sparked, sending powerful shocks through the antivirus.
