    17 let their sword hand drop as they studied the thing. They gently touched its head.

    "What are you?" They didn't seem very afraid.

    17 held out their sword defensively, but they didn't attack yet, taking another step forward and looking curiously at the creatures.

    On a whim, 17 ran up to Jidah, then past her, going straight up to the approaching viruses.

    17 took an experimental swing at it with the sword. They pulled away their wrist, but kept moving with Réva.

    They didn't seem to hear, or perhaps they just weren't listening anymore.

    17 went with the group as they ran, keeping up easily. The howls apparently provided enough reason not to turn back yet.

    17 looked around in confusion. "What's happening?"

    "That doesn't matter."

    "This is not what I was meant for!" They were clearly getting agitated now. "The Makers."

    "I'm not supposed to have them."

    "No. I shouldn't have it. No weapons." "They don't control me. I was just wrong to disobey."

    They quietly held out the sword, apparently offering for her to take it back.

    17 took a step back, heart pounding, thoughts conflicted.

    "I was wrong to leave, even though it hurt. I had no right."

    "The tests were... hurting more. I didn't want to do them."

    They paused, looking ready to turn back and run. The fear had returned to their expression.

    "I should go back."

    They seemed to retreat into themself, clutching the sword tighter and looking down at their feet as they walked.

    17 shook their head. "No... I-I shouldn't have left. I'm supposed to be testing. That's what I'm for."

    17 followed. "You wanted me to say no, didn't you?"

    "...Yes?"

    "Yes, they do. They made me."
