  1. “I do,” Kealie put in. “It’s fun. Well, dangerous, but not boring, so I say yes let’s do that.”
  2. Kealie blinked. “He doesn’t mislead me. He directs me to what will be there if I believe him. It’s simple. Also, your ramblings are fine. Very scholarly.”
  3. Absolutely! Go ahead! Please do!
  4. She pulled it off, confused for half a second before she beamed. “Thanks! It was Eej, though. Oh, and Vance helped with the strategy.”
  5. Eej vibrated insistently. “Fine,” she grumbled, removing her blindfold. Eej directed her to a particularly large bucket, which she filled with water and carried, stumbling, into the house. According to Eej, there wasn’t much left. She threw the water on the flames. That’s all of it? She asked. Eej sent an affirmative.
  6. Nayka noted the expression on Whist’s face. “What’s up? Eej slithered up her arm, helpfully pointing her to an area by the wall of the house, just out of sight, with several full buckets of water and a pump. Nothing fancy. She carried them all back, with Eej’s help, and threw them on the fire. “Do we need more?” She yelled.
  7. Long version: Shorter version: Haly sat in shock for a moment, laugh-hiccuped, and squeaked, “Really?” Then she reddened. “I mean, me too. If you mean what I think you mean. If you mean like as some special kind of friends who always fight together or something, that’s not what I mean at all. I mean, that would be great, but that’s not what I mean. I mean like… like…” She took a breath before continuing. You know what I mean. Like, like. Like Emma and Calano. Is… that’s what you mean, right?” She looked hopefully up at him.
  8. She nodded, feeling eager and terrified at the same time. “Yeah?”
  9. “That’s a plus, I guess.” Nayka scuffed the wooden deck with her shoe. “We’re almost there,” she offered hopefully.
  10. “You’re one who’s worth being dragged around. You’re worth going onto a tower of death and doom and destruction for. You’re kind, and you’re fun, and you undervalue yourself so much it hurts me.” She blinked, hard, and finished softly. “That’s what I mean.”
  11. Nayka turned, concerned. “I’m so sorry, Fiadh.” Did friends always feel this helpless? Like they wanted to do something, but that was impossible?
  12. She started, blushing a little too much to be described as ‘faint’. “You’re… you’re my friend. A great friend. The best kind of friend.” She managed to hold his gaze, though she felt like a caged pigeon.
  13. “It’s not that. TAAron, it’s not just that.” She set him down gently.
  14. Something happened in Haly’s chest—a leap, a break, the start of a sob, something. “I need to make sure you’ll be all right,” she choked. “How can you not see that? It would break my heart to leave you now.”
  15. Finals week.

*Agonized screaming and curling into fetal position under covers*

I’ll be fine. But it’s still scary.

I won’t rant about the school system and its effects on mental health. I have a google doc for that.

    This is fine.

That being said, school is not always very flexible for people with outside circumstances causing stress, anxiety, or depression. In my experience with that kind of thing, I end up lacking almost any motivation for schoolwork or just general daily things, but I'll get pulled into some other project at the drop of a hat. Which of course leads to more stress.

If school is going to be the place where we must grow and be productive, you could make an argument for homeschooling in that it's good to have teachers and a learning setting that is linked with your life personally to allow for flexibility and better mental health.

At the same time, it is impossible for many families to be able to do that. Some families rely on school to be a place for their kids while the parents work. In my opinion, the best thing we can do for public schools is continue researching into the causes of stress and ways to change them, as well as ways to approach teen mental health in general. Of course, people are already doing that, but we really need to work on implementing it into schools.

I'll shy away from specific examples because I don't want to make myself out to be an expert. I think, though, that it really is going to take time to make those changes. For now, if you are struggling with those kinds of things, you should talk to a counselor if your school has one or a therapist if you think that could help.

Also, please tell me what you think of what I just said if you can. I know I probably said something stupid up there, so let me know.

      Hello.

      I'm late to the party.

I only have two finals because I go to a special Focus Program every day after the first two class periods of my normal high school.

At that Science Focus Program, we instead have "portfolios", which are big projects that show the accumulation of our knowledge over the class.

And these portfolios are due soon. And not all of them are done. And I have so much stuff to do and it's stressful and....

      Yeah.

(Now, time to go read what everyone else has posted!)

I’m also late to the party.
I am glad that we have education, but I think that in America especially, it just doesn’t fulfill its job. Language arts classes especially drive me crazy, though this might just be because I read too much. Still, I think that they shouldn’t be teaching high schoolers how to use a comma. All the freshmen are supposed to read Romeo and Juliet; instead, we watched the movies and compared them.
They seem to cater to the needs of the students that aren’t willing to put in any work themselves. This might be harsh, but after having to sit through classes that repeat the same thing they do every year, I’m just a little bit bugged by it. They should keep students up to a certain level, yes, but they also need to let other students go faster. Otherwise, there’s no point in giving up so much of your time just to sit around wasting said time.

Sorry, that was kind of harsh, and I am by no means an expert. This is just a subject that bothers me a lot. Contradict me as needed. :D

  16. “Who?” She whispered. “TAAron, who?” She realized she was holding him and her heart rate increased slightly. Behind her, Sykel chortled.
  17. Haly carefully scooped TAAron into her arms and stepped through the gateway. Sykel sprinted over and followed her.
  18. Haly yelped, then crouched and laid him on the floor with a grunt. “Guys, we need to get going. NOW.”
  19. Sykel shrugged. “Let’s get going, then.”
  20. Sykel rolled her eyes. “Either that, or I drag Evalyn back with me.” ”NO.” “What’s wrong?” Sykel looked very bored.
