  1. She smiled at the ground a little. “I know, TAAron. I love you too.”
  2. She lifted her shoulders. “I don’t know. I think Nameless was afraid Malum would… hurt someone.” She felt ashamed. “I shouldn’t have let them tie you up. You don’t deserve it.”
  3. “No, it was… you were talking to Nameless. I wasn’t really paying attention.”
  4. Haly blinked. “I guess we hadn’t thought that far.”
  5. “I don’t… know what it is. Let’s just focus on getting your soul back. Like Wynn says.”
  6. She hesitated. “No. I’m good.” I think. She smiled. “I’ll be fine.”
  7. “I… don’t think it’s like that.” Haly placed a hand on her chest as if to feel at her disrupted emotions. “It’s fine. I believe you.”
  8. She searched her feelings, mildly surprised that she didn’t see a way to change them. “I don’t know. I… think mind believes you, but the rest of me…”
  9. The words sunk into her stomach, and she took them in slowly. Tears came to her eyes, and with them the swirling, disappointed storm rose up eagerly, stoking her uncertainty. “But what if you’re still Malum? What if you’re lying?” She whispered.
  10. “I… don’t know. I didn’t think it was… it just felt…” Haly wasn’t sure how to explain. It wasn’t her Harmony—she hadn’t heard that since Edmund’s kingdom, for some reason. But it certainly wasn’t her. “I don’t know. Nothing’s right about it. It just seemed to fit.”
  11. She shrugged mutely. “I don’t know,” she mumbled. “It felt right.”
  12. The person in question looked away at the wall.
  13. “It’ll help him.” She walked over, and for some unobtainable reason, felt… disappointed that he’d given in. Something in her circled, brooding in the disappointment. That’s not right.
  14. She balled her hands into fists. “I’m fine! Let him GO!” ”I think you should listen to her,” Sykel drawled. “For the record.”
  15. Haly hurried up to Nameless and pointed to TAAron. “He’s back! Let him free!”
  16. Sykel raised her eyebrows, appreciative of Malum’s affirmation. Haly swallowed and bit her tongue. She nodded, really wanting to believe him, but worried that he was wrong.
  17. Sykel tossed him some rope. Haly grumbled. “Fine. Maybe you’re right. Still makes me mad though. Do we really need a gag, though?”
  18. “I dunno. Maybe there’s not. That just doesn’t strike me as very nice.” “That’s not how it works, Evalyn,” Sykel sighed. “You do what you have to to reach your end goal. It’s that simple.”
  19. Kealie tilted her head, somehow managing to convey a quizzical expression past the blindfold. “There’s nothing wrong with these.” She picked one up and took a bite. Dansl (I’ve abbreviated) watched in almost passive eagerness. Nayka liked how… quiet it all was. Simple. Nothing like cities full of open windowsills and flags and ascending buildings and so many places to hide…
  20. “Um, maybe we not do that,” Haly suggested. “There’s gotta be another option.”
  21. She stumbled away. “No. Just fine. I’m just going to be… over here.” She leaned against the wall.
  22. “Something’s wrong,” she said, heart beating faster. “Something has to be wrong. You wouldn’t talk like this.” She swallowed, entirely unsure what to do. ”I can knock him out,” Sykel offered. ”No! Not now.”
  23. {Neither do I. Actually, I…} She looked up at TAAron and stepped back in shock. It might not be real. It might not… ‘Mights’ didn’t help. It still twisted her gut to see him… hate her. She’d never seen that before. A sob involuntarily escaped her throat. “TAAron? You… why are you mad at me?”
  24. Dansl tinkled a laugh, having heard Quest’s whisper. “No, no. I just want to offer you some… toast.” She snapped her hand away and the door vanished. Holding her hand horizontally, she stepped over to the two, a silver platter stacked with golden buttered toast shimmering into existence on top of her palm. ”Ooh!” Kealie hovered over the toast eagerly.
