Mildly surprised, Ashli asked, “Why? Over what?” -

Snapping the book shut, she grinned. “Perfect. I’ll send Evika a bird and inform them of our suggestion. I don’t think it’ll be an issue.” -

Her eyes glinted. “We send a delegate to their castle using the name of Evika. Then that delegate will steal it and deliver it to our general, who will command the army and crush Nolikar. Boom, Evalyn’s safe, Basilica’s safe.” -

“No. Then Nolikar may go to war anyway, and they’re still fearsome. We need to use it to beat them with first.” -

“To crush Nolikar so they are no longer a threat. Once we have the army, we can destroy theirs, then get rid of the talisman.” -
“Yep!” She played with one of Eej’s vines. “Lots of us leave sooner or later. They know I’m not dead, and that’s enough for them.”

“But they’re still bigger. A war would still be catastrophic. Unless we had it, I suppose… but I don’t think that’s right for us. We’d eventually become them…” she thought for a minute. “Evikan. Yes. We can borrow an Evikan army. They never cared about military might, so the pendant won’t mean much to them. They’ll want it out of play. We can help them destroy it. That way, nobody in Basilica has to know.” -
“Yep. But I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

“Don’t know. It’s not invincibility—it’s unbeatability. But I think we’ve killed their soldiers before, so that’s that. But how do we get it away from them?” -
“Yep. Oh wait… Ocumeritation, I guess. Shortened the distance.”

“Military. Just conquests. But shouldn’t they have to be mad at the…” she shook her head. “Huh.” -
She scowled at the mass of vines beside her. “Eej launched me from the top of a tree, and I landed in that forest where I met you guys.”

Ashli swept over. “Oh dear,” she said softly. “Well. I’m not sure what to do with this.” -
“It’s a peaceful life. We trade with each other and smile and talk, and we have festivals… sing and dance and eat. We learn your language in case we ever happen to meet a human, or another race that speaks it. And our island… trees with mazelike branches that extend so high and are easy to climb, glassy lakes, glowing fireflies. I guess we’re sort of complacent, but I think we’d be okay if we got into a fight. You know, with our Bondvines and Bondwaves and Bondbreezes. My little sister had a Bondmound—a little mound of earth. She liked to encase herself in the dirt and pretend to be a monster. She was cute.” Kealie smiled at the memory.

“Something… I’m searching these books…” she gestured to the stacks in the corners of the room and on the desk— “for this symbol. I’m close, I can tell.” -

Tower of Ghenjei: An ICanon subplot

“Our world has some inherent magic, particularly in the west. That’s important.” She pointed to a spot in the chart right in the middle of a group of stars. “There. Right there. Every night after the Nolikans make another conquest, there’s a comet. A red comet. Where it comes from is seemingly random, but it always vanishes right there. I’ve tried connecting the stars, and I’ve come out with this…” she pulled a scrap of paper out of another drawer and showed him. It was a many-pointed star, almost symmetrical. -

Tower of Ghenjei: An ICanon subplot

“A pattern.” She opened a nondescript door, descended some stairs into a small, dark, stone room, and then pulled a scroll out of a desk and spread it out. A map of the stars. “Our sky is rather temperamental. Celestial events are not uncommon. Usually.” -

“My office.” She led him out of Haly’s apartment—after Haly said bye—and down the hall to a flight of stairs leading down. “I prefer to work out of sight, especially with all the Nolikan delegates. Even if they are in the separate guest wings.” -

“Yeah. I’ll be fine. Thanks.” She smiled slightly. “See you later, then.”
