  1. Several people glanced his way, some fervently, some unconcerned (depending on which country they were representing). Haly sat at the opposite end of the table, pretending interest in the food. A man sat next to her, occasionally making attempts at conversation. There were empty seats here and there.
  2. After a few minutes, Kealie got bored and made Eej set her down. “We’re getting a wagon? Right?”
  3. Phrases floated out of the room, barely discernible. I’m sure we’ll reach some agreement… The provinces worry me, all those rumors… ..so young too. Such a pity… Lower your voice, Nolikans all around… …nah, Evika definitely doesn’t have a chance… …it’s got to be some sort of magic… None of the voices were the same, and none were Haly. Though there was mention of her. …their pitiful offering, they’ll exchange her to buy safety… …fall for that, he knows his job, and it’s got nothing to do with marrying some spineless princess…
  4. A young girl, maybe fifteen, hurried out and almost knocked into him. “Sorry!” She grinned and continued down the hallway.
  5. She nodded, swallowing her anxiety. “Okay. See you. Down the hall a ways, veer left at the stairs, follow the noise.” Haly smiled a little, a real smile. “Thanks so much for coming.” Then she left.
  6. Her whole demeanor slumped. “I don’t like it. I know I need to buy Basilica time, but what if it doesn’t work? What if there’s nothing else we can do? What if… what if I’m trapped, and there’s no way out, and…”
  7. “Ummmmm…” she grabbed his wrist and dragged him to a closet. “I think Cjehu hid his fancy stuff in here so he didn’t have to use it. It should fit you. Then just walk in and sit down and introduce yourself as a Basilican delegate or something.” Stretching, she managed to knock a folded outfit off the top shelf.
  8. Her gaze dropped. “It’s… to make the betrothal official.” Eyes widening, she looked up at him. “You know about that, right?”
  9. She started. “Oh! The feast… yeah. I guess. I probably should.” Disgruntled, she kicked at a couch. “You gonna be good here? It’ll only be maybe another half hour or so. You could sneak in! You should sneak in.”
  10. “This is my room. Well, part of it.” She gestured to a doorway with a curtain. “That’s the central living room. I also have a small kitchen, a library, a sunroom, my bedroom, a bathroom, and a closet. That’s empty, because I conveniently forgot all my fancy stuff at the clinic.” She sighed, holding out her arms. She was in a fancy red and gold dress. “Sykel a ways manages to find something annoying for me to wear. Oh well, I got out of wearing the shoes.”
  11. The shards whirled around him, then vanished. He was standing in the living room of an apartment thing. It was fancy, palacy, decorations, couches, blah blah blah. It didn’t look very Haly-ish, but there she was, wide eyed in disbelief. On impulse, she jumped forward and hugged him. “You are here. You’re alive, and it’s not a trick, and it’s not a dream.”
  12. “I have all my stuff.” She leaned back on Eej. “He’s gonna be my legs for a while, cuz I’m lazy.”
  13. It’s wonderful to me, she insisted. ”What’s wrong?” ______ asked, concern in his eyes. “Nothing,” she replied quickly. “Excuse me for a minute.” She stood and fled the hall down to her rooms, then locked the door. When Sykel did it, she asked for permission to follow my brother. So… permission to follow me granted. “Once she says yes,” Essa said, like she could hear Haly, “Smash the Permissive at your feet.”
  14. “I’m ready now.” She guzzled the last of it and carefully placed the bowl by the thing. “As ready as I’ll ever be!”
  15. Oh. Her mental whisper was quiet. Poor man. Wonderful, crazy man. So you’re alive now! How are you talking to me? ”Dont you want to have a conversation, face to face?” Essa sighed. “Get out of here.”
  16. Haly sat at the end of a long table, next to a nice looking man named _______. Then TAAron’s voice filled her head. She tried not to gasp. Are you haunting me or something? I mean, that’s not bad, but… are you?
  17. “I’m good with whatever,” she replied. Then, around a bite of soup—“this is really good.”
  18. “Envision her. Call her with your mind. Ask for permission to follow her—I’m your words, but use the word ‘permission’. I will bring the others shortly.” She handed him the glass sphere.
  19. She nodded thoughtfully, watching the flowers. “Rest well.” Turning to TAAron, she pulled a glass ball out of her pocket, identical to Sykel’s. “Ready?”
  20. “Cool. No idea where that is, but cool.” She scooped another serving of soup into her bowl, then resumed eating hungrily.
  21. She glanced down at them with mild interest. “Explain this first.”
  22. “She’s in Basilica. I’ll get you there. Lerac’s dead—he healed you. Yes, you were dead.”
  23. Essa walked out of nowhere, looking very much like a businesslike nine year old… but strangely, no clipboard. “I’m afraid she’s not here at the moment.”
  24. Crystals studded from the walls, in branching passageways and all over the low ceiling… they glowed dawn purple and flickered like flames. It took some time to locate the crystal Essa was looking for. But finally, she lay her finger on the one. She delved through Haly’s mind, only Haly’s mind. It lines up, she thought with foreboding. Surely it will happen. Unless… She glanced at the tiny book she carried. To enter it would be to lose her foresight—her one true advantage. She would be nothing but a character. A person. How she hated the very idea. But no, her mind was made up. Here goes nothing.
