    He snorted. "Yeah. That's why they'd laugh at me. Honestly, part of me still thinks this is all some elaborate joke."

    He was quiet for a minute. "I don't know," he replied. "I just... I want all this to be over. I just want to go home so everyone can laugh at me and move on."

    He blushed. "No. Like... you know. When my chest tightens up and it gets hard to breathe. And I can't stop thinking about all the bad things."

    "Like... like... this." My author... "Right," she mumbled. "Right. How do you do that?"

    He shrugged uncomfortably. "I don't like when people see me like this," he mumbled.

    "I... wanted to be alone, I guess." He messed with the buckles on his satchel.

    "I... I didn't feel like being on the beach anymore once I realized I lost Gaioh."

    Bat jumped, then grinned with relief. "So he's coming back soon?"

    "Not at all. Tell Bat not to worry. I'm not gonna go anywhere."

    "Good," he replied. "Pretty good." He stood up and smiled. "Are we doing something cool?"

    He said the surgery could be done so Gaioh was sitting on the table, prodding his chest. He looked up and smiled. "Oh, hey."

    He was quiet for a moment. "Could you... could you maybe check on Gaioh? Just real fast?"

    “Oh.” He looked at it for a minute, then leaned into the side hug. “Thanks, Tam.”

    Bat stiffened. "Wh- what's that thing?" he asked, pointing to his leg with a hint of panic in his voice.

    He nodded, tearing up. He hastily wiped the tears away before they could fall. “Whatever. He was just a bird.”

    His smile wavered again and he looked away. “I lost Gaioh, got mauled by a panther, attacked by a tree full of spiders, and abandoned by my bird.”

    He jumped, sat up, sniffled, wiped his face with the back of his hand, and gave her a watery smile. “I’m good. I’m okay. Are you feeling any better?”

    Bat eventually went back to crying as the hollowness faded. "I wanna go home," he told the leaves on the ground. "I wanna go home."

    And so Bat stayed that way for a long, long time.

    Bat stared after him. Something he hadn't known had existed inside him snapped, and he curled up on the ground, too hollow for more tears.

    "What's wrong with me? First my tattoos won't go away and nobody will tell me what's wrong with me, and now I've lost Gaioh and everyone's gonna die--" His voice broke.
