    "Yeah... we should go to the barn now. Right now. And I'll run the tests there." Bat squeaked. "I, uh... I don't. I'm sorry..."

    He set it aside, suddenly not hungry at all. "I might do a blood test on you too."

    Bat sighed. "I don't... know how to fix it," he admitted. "I'll give you more fireworms this evening, and then in the morning... so hopefully that works." Had some of his Nullite gotten into her somehow? Was that why this was happening? "Mine too," Gaioh chimed in, eating his eggs.

    He blinked and frowned. "That's... that's really bad." What does that mean?

    He frowned at the plate that had vanished. "No. It's not." He gave her the coat Tempest had gotten. "Can you... narrate it away?"

    "Hey," he protested, but he brushed it off best he could and ate it anyway. "Are you still cold?"

    He snickered, shoving another big pancake bite into his mouth. "Thanks, Tam. Do you know what is that?"

    He turned red. “Oh, come on. My pancakes are being stolen.” He scooted back and picked the plate up and held it away from the table, trying to eat faster.

    “Hey!” He protested. “I get the idea he didn’t have much time to be a teenager.”

    Bat continued to eat his fated pancakes, not knowing that if he didn’t eat enough right that minute, he’d DIE. Thankfully, he did, so that didn’t matter.

    “Thank you!” Bat began devouring his food, wondering how she’d gotten there just as he was thinking about food. “Sounds good to me.” Bat would have hugged Cricket too, but he was too far away, and Tam was doing it pretty well already.”

    “That sounds nice,” Bat agreed. If Bat had known, he would have apologized for his hunger. As it was, he did not apologize, nor did his author for revealing such mundane thoughts.

    Bat was incredibly hungry by now. He wanted his pancakes.

    Bat nodded. “Fair. Up to you, I think. Though I don’t believe there’s a prison that could reliably hold them, so… yeah.”

    The figure melted into a definite form— a sickly albino woman with knobby bones and sagging skin. She smiled. “Firstly, evil is subjective. You’ll often hear the phrase ‘good vs evil’, but the evil differs. Usually ‘evil’ is used to mean something truly bad— no room for antivillains, for example. You are evil, as you wish only to do evil. However, your purpose is to do evil, though you’re only beginning your journey. “Malevolence, as in your name, is a key component of any true evil. While you may be bad, you are not yet truly evil, because you have not learned to hate.” She picked up a goblet of deep red liquid— wine?— in her spindly fingers. “I will teach you.” “Me neither! I’m not fine with it either.” Bat tried to make his face look stern.

    No scud how long ago was that Bat nodded. “That would be preferable.”

    “I’ll help,” Bat volunteered. He didn’t want Tam or Cricket to die. Though how he planned to kill anyone, he had no idea. Hed figure something out. “Or… I’ll at least patch you up.”

    “And you’ve saved us! A lot. It doesn’t matter. We want you around. We care about you.”

    K just don’t be sad “Yeah,” Bat agreed. “You saved her from freezing! And you didn’t even know your brother was alive. How unfair is that?”

    No glassy *hug* “Exactly! Maybe both.” “You didn’t choose to be stalked by a creepy brother,” Bat pointed out.

    Bat jumped. It’s not fair to expect anyone else to assume responsibility for me, he replied simply. “Exactly,” Bat agreed. Tam was good at talking. “If you weren’t around, we probably would be dead anyway. Or at least sad.”

    Bat shook his head. “You didn’t wanna lose control. That’s up to you. If I’d died, it woulda been my fault.” Prolly woulda deserved it, too.
