    Yes it’s very good Bat always woke up early. Often, at least. He was very tempted to shake both of his friends awake to make sure they weren’t dead… but if they weren’t dead, they needed sleep. So he moved to the other side of the barn and wondered why there was a wooden flute in his bag, because he didn’t play the flute.

    Bat thought Cricket was good at talking. Bat smiled and hugged her. Then he lay down next to her and fell asleep, exhausted from saying way too many words.

    Bat scooted around to sit next to her. “I know it doesn’t change anything. Not really. But… don’t ignore it, okay? And every time you think about it, remember you saved our lives. That might help you work through it. “Exactly.” Bat loved traveling with two people who were both good at talking.

    “So she made a mistake, but the outcome was good because she saved us.” He looked up. “How I see it, you lost control. Which… honestly is really scary. But you also saved my life, and Cricket’s. And you found out that you’re a lot more powerful than you thought you were. All you have to do now is master that.” He closed the notebook. “Killing is awful. It is. I’m not gonna say it isn’t. But he was gonna do that to Cricket— and he was gonna kill me for fun. So… nobody’s perfect, right? At least you’re trying to be a good person. And you saved us. That’s good, right?”

    “I know. But that was yesterday. Okay— first, tell me what happened with Stone as you see it. You can be vague, if you want.”

    “She just keeps getting worse! What in the world would make you think waiting is a solution at all?” He took a breath. “I’m sorry. I… didn’t mean to get heated. Can we please just try for a minute?” ”Then what’s happening to you??”

    “What else could it be?” Bat realized. “If it were anything else, you would have been able to Narrate it away— or there would be traces of Nullite or other substance in your blood— especially if it was affecting you much.” Great. He was NOT a therapist. He pulled out a notebook and pencil anyway and sat down in front of her. “Cricket, come here. Tan, sit down.” ”I am NOT waiting until the problem gets worse. I’m not letting her die.”

    He stood up to pace. “No. No, this isn’t normal.” Stop hyperventilating, Bat told himself sternly. Stop right now. “Something is seriously wrong.” And he couldn’t fix it. The first real friend hed ever had in the world was PROBABLY DYING, and he couldn’t fix it. “There’s gotta be a connection,” he decided aloud. “Something’s happening. You get cold every time you… you…” I don’t know. What could possibly even BE wrong? She was a Narrator, akin to a god. And yet here she was, freezing, unable to unnarrate her ailments… But her blood was normal… Think harder, you idiot. You’re a medic. There’s an answer here. “It’s not… it couldn’t be something mental,” he checked.

    Bat was getting really scared now. He pulled out an entire handful of worms. “Tam?”

    “We should get some sleep now,” Bat suggested. “A LOT of sleep. Take your melanin, Cricket.”

    “Good, good.” “No,” Bat insisted. “As resident medic, those are the precautions I’m gonna insist on. Plus, that way we can share our blankets with you.”
