    He wrenched his wrist away, squeezing his eyes shut. He wanted to listen to her, to put it all in the back of his mind to think about later. If I don’t do it now, I never will. And I’ll be like this forever— a puppet. He opened his eyes. “None of this is real. You’re not real. I’m not real. When do we say we’ve had enough? When do we decide something for ourselves for once?” His hand trembled as he pushed the button and vanished from sight.

    “Scud, Cricket.” Now that the rain had stopped, she squeezed out her braid. “You’re a kind person. You only see the good in people, at least the ones you aren’t enemies with. I almost envy you.”

    “It’s TAAron.” She closed her eyes and reached through the connection again, willing him to come back somehow.

    “Cuz you’re all bleeding hearts. Y’all got blood in your eyes and now you see everything as pink.” He stared at where she was, eyes wide. Gosh, what HAD he meant? He really WAS going crazy— No. No. He broke away from Tam. That’s what she wants me to think. “You’re gonna hafta do better than that,” he said, up above Tam’s head to the green canopy beyond. He pulled out his compass. “You liar, you awful, nasty liar.”

    She snorted. “Bat? He’s naive, bashful, and boring.” She ate it very quickly and curled up on top of his head.

    He forced down the other things he was going to say. “How often are we just playing into their hands?” Maybe there was a reason he hated thinking about things. A reason that broke him. This is YOUR fault, isn’t it? He thought. Everything I am is just you.

    Ooooo ” so just cut it all off!” He looked down at his hands. You’re doing it again, something whispered. But he had to! He couldn’t think about things like that. Things like Authors….. He straightened. And snowbanks… and mushrooms……. ”Do you think,” he said, “Maybe there’s things they can’t stop us from doing?”

    She coughed into her hand several more times, then wiped her eyes. “Yeah. I feel something. I just don’t know what.” It was maddening.

    Sure! Eepy narrowed her eyes at it. “I don’t trust it. It shouldn’t hurt you like that. You should cut it all off!”

    She glanced at Lerac, wondering… She coughed, then coughed again.

    “Yeah.” Don’t think about it. He looked up at the leaves. “Funny how they have veins.”

    She reached to touch it again.

    He didn’t want to think about that. “Those mushrooms are cute,” he observed, pointing to a small bunch at the foot of a tree. “Poisonous. But cute.”

    Thanks She snatched some in her teeth, then used her talons to tug on his hair. "What's this fluffy stuff? Is it dangerous?" He did. Now that he was thinking about it, at least. He swallowed and pushed everything to the back of his mind. So what do we do now?

    She smiled and dissolved into gray ash. He stared at the dirt. I just don't think........ it doesn't feel right to forget. There has to be an explanation. A reason. Something." Ruia smiled and stood up, rolling her shoulder and flexing her fingers.
