    She finished coughing. “When we get there.”

    Spren glowed a little brighter and spun in a giddy circle. Where’d you get the other one??

    “Nothing. I—“ She cut herself off to cough.

    “I read a little. But mostly for school.” Spren fluttered in through the front door. You’re welcome, she said, sounding very smug, as the hole she’d left behind her knit back together. Bat couldn’t hear her, but frowned at her.

    “I dunno,” she mumbled.

    He smiled. She made a very warm scarf. He yawned and moved into the front room, giving Elliot an obligatory scowl. “Do you read?” He asked.

    “She’s not that bad,” Bat said. “I think she almost said thank you.”

    She lost the fire. “Oh. Look at that.” She kept walking.

    Aw… No! Now is not the time to turn red, dummy! “Okay. We could…” “Tie up the dude on the couch?” Rose suggested, entering the front door absolutely dripping. “Also, what are you doing with a weasel?” Bat held her protectively. “It’s Tam. She’s a stoat.” Rose blinked. “Okay. That’s not weird at all. We got anything to eat?” “Pork and mushrooms in the fridge.” She gave him a thumbs up and carried off the bowl to go find some dry clothing.

    She shrugged. “It’s a fire. Somebody should put it out.”

    “Okay,” he said. “Later. We’ll talk about it later. For now, uh…” What made girls feel better? Painting their nails, chocolate, flowers… according to his cousin. “I could go pick you some flowers,” he suggested. “Or go buy some chocolate. There’s a little market on the compass somewhere.”

    She didn’t want to think about that. So she summoned a fire instead. “Look,” she said, pointing at the moderately-sized fire blocking their path. “A fire.”

    “Oh,” he whispered. “I… I’m so sorry.” He lifted her, cradling her in his arms. “If you wanna talk about it…”

    “Don’t look at me like that.” He scratched her head. “It’s okay. I just… need to know.”

    “That’s okay. Im glad you’re back.”

    “When I said that… maybe there were things they couldn’t stop us from doing… you seemed to know what I meant.” He held her a little closer. “You’ve been thinking too, then?”

    Her face fell and she bit her lip. “I… guessed.” But that wasn’t the same as knowing.

    “You… I think you knew what I meant really immediately.”

    “…yeah.”

    He ate for a minute. “Tam? Can we talk about something, really quick?”

    “Go on.” She squeezed his hand.

    “Just… I dunno. Everything you do. How you can just become an animal…” How I don’t think you’re even mad at me yet. He scratched her gently behind the ears.

    He ate quietly with one hand, holding and petting her with the other. ”It’s really cool how you can do that,” he said softly.

    “I… sure.”
  25. Bird Furious
    “Okay.” He got her a glass anyway, then brought his water and hers to the table with the bread. He gently lifted her off his shoulders and cuddled her to his chest. He wanted to apologize again, but he stayed silent.
