    4. Through The Living Glass
  3. She smiled, grateful. Ria handed Five a handful of tablets. “These should help with some of those toxins, okay?” She nodded and swallowed them.
  4. “Five, come here.” She hesitated, as Starlight was still holding her blanket. ok night for real
  5. She nodded, hugging her blanket so hard her arms hurt.
  6. “We’ll try,” she agreed. “I’ll look more at your scans to see where I can find them.” ”Thank you,” she whispered, clutching her blanket. She still looked pale. “Oh.” That… she had to be messing with him… But it wouldn’t change what he wanted to say anyway. So he squeezed her tighter. “I care about you a lot,” he whispered. “More than anyone ever.”
  7. “Why do you care so much?” He blurted. He closed his eyes. “I just… I don’t even care all that much about me, so… why do you?” “We might be able to, if we could manage to get them out.”
  8. “But… but I don’t know how to do that either.” He closed his eyes, shutting out the dark trees, and held her closer. She frowned. “I… suppose they could. If we could find nanites advanced enough…”
  9. “We could try, but their structure is resistant. It would take a very near lethal shock, and seeing how delicate the balance in her is already, I’m not risking that.”
  10. “Oh, well, I couldn’t fix you. Can’t fix you. I don’t know how, you see.” He rocked back and forth with her, staring off into the trees absently. “I’ve never fixed anything beyond cuts and bruises. I probably never will.” She paled. “Surgery?” Ria sighed. “That’s not possible. She has these little machines in her, synthesizing the poison from her own body.” She choked. “Poison?”
  11. “…oh.” He frowned. “But I broke you.” “You just did. And now you sound more mechanical…” She smiled back.
  12. He felt somehow distanced from the conversation. But there was nobody else around, and she was hugging him, right? Or maybe that was just his imagination. Maybe it was Cricket she was hugging, and he’d just forgotten, like the idiot he was. “Me?” He asked, voice muffled by her shoulder.
  13. I wish I had something to offer but I haven’t worked through it myself, and as good as I am at theorizing about the universe, I’m so bad at articulating in regular conversations I’m so sorry
  14. “I’d wondered.” He finally wrapped his arms around her, not trusting himself to speak. Not as broken and crazy as he was, not thinking what he was in that moment. So he just squeezed her carefully instead. Aden licked his lips. “You just… sat there…”
  15. Five stared at him. Aden did the negpositive again.
  16. “Intentional?” Wait, she was taking. “You’re talking.”
  17. He slumped, resting his head on her shoulder. Scud, why was he even trying? For anything… maybe he’d never liked her. Maybe he’d just needed her, and now she was more broken because of it. “—what was that?” She hugged her half of the blanket. Then she carefully passed it off to him.
  18. “It will,” she promised. “What happened?”
  19. Ok I second everything glass said I’m really no good at advice… but it helps me to remember that we’re here to get through this. Things won’t magically go away whrn you pray, but they will get easier because God will be more able to help you. *hugs many muches*
  20. “I don’t remember!” He pressed his hands to his eyes. Great! Now she was even brokener. ”That’s not a word, idiot,” he snapped. “I dunno, she said my Author solved something, and I was supposed to explain it, but I don’t know how and I haven’t practiced at all. I hardly remember what she even said.” Five sat down with him, carefully wrapping the blanket around his shoulders. “It’ll be okay,” she promised.
  21. “Woah. Calm down. At least we know, right? Everything will be fine in a couple of days.” Five came over. “Starlight? Whats going on?” She gave him half of the blanket.
  22. “We… she needs surgery too.” He felt tears forming in his eyes. “Yes I do. Even your Author said so. But I can’t,” he told the sky. “I’m not good enough.”
  23. “Your heart malfunctioned,” Ria told him. “I… cannot recommend surgery strongly enough.”
  24. “Try a negative and a positive,” Ria called, going over his scans again. Aden did so. shouod work like the two wire thing u mentioned He stared at her, then pulled away. “What do you care, anyway? You can just make someone else to fix you. I don’t know how, Tam! I’m not good enough— I know you’re listening!” He yelled at the sky. “Make someone else! I can’t fix her. You both know! I break things. That’s all I—“ His voice broke. He turned and stalked into the forest.
