Haha, I have my understanding right now. If Brandon smashes it to pieces in WoR, it's all good
-
I'd guess the ability to give and receive Breaths might be present in children of other worlds, but it's meaningless unless they're on Nalthis. The ability to use Investiture is separate from the Investiture itself in that case. Kind of like Scadrial, but on Scadrial it's a bit more portable once you have the ability and want to leave....
-
I agree with that, on a personal level. I don't see where that implies you can easily affect other KR, etc. through Surgebinding or Soulcasting. I'm not saying it CAN'T, just that all evidence on Roshar and in the Cosmere so far seems to say that any investiture provides insulation. Szeth's Lashings against Shardplate, Allomancy against Feruchemical things in the body, etc.. Not necessarily that they can't be overcome, but I think it's a significant deterrent.
-
Well, on average, yes. Full Mistborn Feruchemists could compete with pretty much anyone I think. Hell, Brandon said Scadrial will naturally develop faster than light travel based on their abilities. I wouldn't take his statement as a judgement on absolute relative investiture. Edit: As far as the KR affecting their Plate, where do we see anything like that? The only time we see Surgebinding in combination with Shardplate is when Szeth assasinates the king at the very beginning of the novel... Kaladin didn't even try to engage the Parshendi Shardbearer with Surgebinding, so we have no idea whether that's a viable combat choice or not...
-
I'm terrible with searching down interviews, but I know for a fact that there's a quote that Allomancy could not affect Shardplate/Shardblades because they hold too much investiture. And Szeth cannoth directly act on Shardplate or use his Surgebindings effectively while wearing Shardplate. I'm not saying it's impossible, since we also have interviews where Brandon says Hemalurgy can steal Shardblades. But in the normal course of things, it seems fair to say different forms of investiture have a fair amount of insulation from one another.
-
Well, Kaladin/Szeth will likely be epic no matter what. I don't think Brandon meant that powers were nullified totally, just that you couldn't use them directly against other people holding significant investiture. Jasnah, for example, couldn't deal with Kaladin the same way she did the muggers, assuming he was holding Stormlight. That doesn't mean there wouldn't be a fight, or that it'd be one-sided. Jasnah could still turn the ground under him into water, for example. Or maybe even the air into a liquid or solid around his head.... I think between various holders of investiture on Roshar, it's going to come down to speed and knowing your opponent has abilities as well. That may be why Shardplate and Shardblades were created to begin with, actually....
-
If you're talking about winning against Kaladin, we have word from Brandon that various forms of investiture are immune to one another. Jasnah couldn't turn Kaladin to a pillar of salt any more than Kaladin could Lash her to an object and hurl her away. Assuming Jasnah had charged stones and Kaladin was holding Stormlight at least.
-
I'd argue that genetics still plays a part in temperament, which has some effect on actions. I don't think Kaladin was born destined to be a KR. But I'd wager that someone born with sociopathic tendencies, for example, would be a whole lot less likely to bond with an honorspren...

1. We don't know how Szeth does his Lashings yet. 2. Depends on your definition of Surgebinder, I think. Is Szeth a spren-less Surgebinder? Or is he something completely different? To be in one of the orders of the Knights Radiant, I believe, necessitates a spren. Szeth is proof that it's not the only way to that power though. 3. No, other than that it's unusual (much shorter and thinner than most). 4. Not sure. I'd guess there is a genetic and/or destiny component to it, but I'd also guess that the emergence of the spren and the manifestation of any abilities comes concurrently. That matches the timing with Amaram's army and Syl pretty well, since we know she was watching him then. Landed is almost certainly just a term for lighteyes/nobility.

Brandon has said some very interesting, yet cryptic things about aluminum. I'd guess its ability to shield things from Allomancy is a bit more powerful than copperclouds...
-
Good luck, let us see how it turns out! Now you have me thinking about Mistborn-related tattoos too.....
-
That work? Tried to leave the ring with a little texture so you can have some shading, but depending on size, it's going to be tough getting in much detail that won't blur/fade over time. If you want something more stylized, or with more details, you should work with the artist directly.
-
Sure, busy later tonight, but sometime tomorrow I'll give ya a black and white version without the background color/texture stuff. Edit: As far as size, any decent artist will know what to do. You can't make it too small though, since the thin lines on the symbols will fade and blur over time.
-
Do you want just the symbols and division lines? I can do something like that tomorrow if you want. If you want a greyscale, detail-oriented thing, I'd talk to an actual tattoo artist and let them design it on their own based on the original picture.

Hydrofluoric acid, in sufficient quantities, would do the trick, as far as damage at least, I think. It wrecks havoc in the blood even after the initial burns. It would still take a long time to burn out the goldminds for a compounder though. I think the only real weapon against gold compounders is modern explosives. Nothing in the AoL era would necessarily be enough to kill one in a single shot.

I don't have the book on hand right this second, but the quote you're thinking of was, I think, that the size of the spike doesn't matter much. Large spikes are used for Inquisitors for psychological effect mostly, but small spikes are more practical and often preferable, especially when doing something like spiking someone without them realizing what happened. The Hemalurgic decay is mostly a function of the speed of spiking and the time between the spike being driven and placed. Brandon has said that the flow of fresh blood is a factor, but I don't think it's been elaborated on.
-
I think if anything, it's the opposite. Anyone in the Cosmere can access Allomancy and Hemalurgy. A bead of Lerasium, or knowledge of spike points, is all that's needed. So yeah, Allomancy/[other form of Investiture] combinations are more likely than other pairings, but the Allomancy would be the added power, not the original one.
-
I'd guess only Lerasium Mistborn, and possibly Vin, can match Inquisitors in that area.
-
Also, kidding aside, Mistborn like Vin and Kelsier seem to have brains that just automatically compensate for the physical consequences of their actions. There's no calculation involved. It's a bit like saying there's no way you could walk in a straight line over very uneven ground because a bipedal robot can't. There's a giant gap in ability to intuitively understand the environment.

They used quaternions to avoid gimbal-lock. Obviously. Physics doesn't play nice with magic, sir

Hemalurgy, Forging and Bloodsealing
Krelian replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
I'd guess the spiked person would either lose that ability, or, depending on where the spike had been placed, die. When a spike is through a major organ, it seems that the investiture in the spike is the only thing that prevents the wound from being lethal. Hmm, that might be a way to avoid the aforementioned death, but it would require some really intense Forging, since you'd be rebuilding part of their Spiritweb from scratch. I don't know that Forging is powerful enough to just "rewind" to before the spike was there. And you'd still have to be sure to refresh the stamp regularly or you'd suddenly end up re-spiked. I doubt it. Hemalurgy requires that something be stolen from another Spiritweb, as far as I know. I don't think you could use it on something self-contained, like Essence marks made by you, for you. -
Didn't Brandon say in an interview or signing that Sazed didn't like how Snapping and inheritance of abilities worked, and he changed both? I'm fairly sure someone being naturally born as a Mistborn in the Alloy of Law era is essentially impossible. However, I also think we have Word of Brandon that Atium and/or Lerasium will come back eventually, and that we will see Mistborn in the third trilogy...

Yes, any of the Blessings works exactly the same way as far as awakening them. I'm not sure that TenSoon was the ONLY one to ever have 4, but he mentioned that killing OreSeur gave him the right to the spikes. And Kandra killing Kandra (outside of executions, where I assume the spikes are reused on Mistwraiths) apparently never really happens. So it'd be exceedingly rare.
-
Kandra and koloss both show that spikes retain their power for a very long time. Kandra Blessings imply the spikes are good for at least 1,000 years, actually. As for this idea - Kandra require Blessings, as far as we know. If they can use Koloss spikes, I'd guess it would be for Potency only...

True. Stormlight can be stored, so I guess that's definitely portable. I guess I was more thinking of the Nahel bond with spren. I think we'll need to learn more about how Szeth pulls it off before deciding on that though.
