So you know how Elrond and Arwen (in the movies) have that whole thing where Elrond's like "I looked into your future, and I saw death," because Arwen's choosing mortality instead of going to the Undying Lands? Well... that's probably even sadder than you're thinking. In Tolkien's legendarium, Elves and Men have different afterlives. So when the two of them say goodbye, they are saying goodbye FOREVER, NEVER to meet again.
