Are we talking about the car that wax increased his weight tenfold and smashed to a halt to save its occupants from falling into the river? I don't know that this is all that big of an issue; don't Kelsier, Vin, and Wax all drop coins to slow their fall from great heights? Meanwhile, if a Lurcher were to fall off a bridge, they'd only be able to save themselves from the fall if there was metal already on or in the bridge. Hemalurgy is extremely precise with its Bindpoints; you might be able to Pull (or Push) a metal into your target with Allomancy in the attempt to rip off a random chunk of Spiritweb, but getting anything specific is unlikely. I really, really think it would be an unwise idea to Pull said spike into yourself afterwards, as its charge is almost certainly not carrying something useful, and you almost certainly won't get it into the correlating Bindpoint on your own body. You might be able to Pull this off with the aid of Atium, but not as a normal Lurcher. Agreed. Iron has some nice tricks to pull (literally), but steel has overall more versatility and practical use in adventurous situations. I don't know that they're necessarily equal in flight power, even in the city. Wax comments in AoL how Coinshots tend to be graceful in flight while Lurchers are clunky in comparison. Plus, you must still be entirely reliant on anchors already being in place for you at the destination you wish to Pull to, but Coinshot we've seen don't have any problems with mobility. I mean, I think that could work, but a gun seems a lot more effective in most situations. . . Though, I suppose a Coinshot would probably get more mileage out of firearms too, since they generally generate more force upfront than Pushing on the metal. That said, a Coinshot can Push on non-aluminum bullets to give them extra force while a Lurcher cannot. All in all, I maintain my stance on Coinshot vs Lurcher shenanigans, though I respect other's opinions on the topic.

These are some great insights, thank you for putting together this post! I actually still think steel is still better more more traditional "adventuring" scenarios though; iron may be able to scale buildings more effectively, but steel can pretty much always break your fall if you've got a metal doohicky to drop and Push off of. Iron can't do that unless something's already in place above you to act as an anchor, making it more circumstantial. Steel can also launch you about more easily, since your anchors are typically either underneath or behind you, while iron can only Pull you upwards if there's a tall building. Not a big problem in the city, but go to a small town or the wilderness and a Coinshot can still Steeljump by dropping clips while a Lurcher is resigned to walk. Good marks on iron's ability to attack from behind someone. I think that can be pretty powerful, but a Coinshot can basically turn any pocket change into a bullet, and even if that's coming from up front it's going to be nearly as useful if not more so in a lot of situations since you don't have to start your attack by throwing your metal with the hope of it getting behind your opponent. So I think that this tactic, while useful, ultimately is just another way that a Metalborn could use their varying powers in different ways, more useful in some cases, less useful in others. Also, since a Coinshot can move high-velocity projectiles away from them while a Lucher must curve it towards themselves, a Coinshot has an advantage at, well, not dying due to a mistake at using their powers. I feel that this is rather important. All in all, Lurchers are neat and their powers probably deserve more respect than they're typically given, but a Coinshot is generally better equipped for more scenarios.

The way I understand it now, all you need to do to make a Soulstamp is the correct writing, be born in or near MaiPon, and Intent. Does this mean you could make the main body of the Forgery (not the Linchpin stamp itself) a book instead of a carved medallion like Shai did? What about adding lines to it? If it was just a book with the Stamp used to apply its code, I see no reason why you couldn't update it with a few lines to alter your recent past, such as saying you studied a given topic during your Saturday instead of hanging out with your friends, or rewriting your past to say you got to bed on time rather than staying up till 5 AM. This would be different from Shai's Stamps that completely rewrite your past to get an extensive skill set and knowledge, but it would be useful for a number of more mundane everyday tasks.

A Surgebinder seems to mostly rely on having a strong Connection to their Spren to access their Surges as well as to summon their Blade and Plate. We know that Tapping Connection via F-duralumin can make you a Squire to a Radiant, or even multiple Radiants at once. So, does this mean that a Connector Ferring Tapping enough Connection could not only use a Radiant's own Surgebinding powers, but that they could brute force summon their opponent's Blade and/or Plate by having more Connection to them than the Radiant themselves? Realistically, you'd probably need to be a Compounder to pull this off, but it would be pretty interesting. Maybe the Knight's Blade would be more or less off limits due to their sapience, but maybe the Plate or a dead Blade would be easier to trick.

What would happen if one of the Charred were left out in the sun?
Trusk'our replied to Nomad8's question in Cosmere Q&A
Wouldn't that mean you could make a supercharged Chared with the resulting Sunheart, since their would be more Investiture inside? -
The Scadrian government is gonna reignite the Steel inquisition, it seems. Only instead of being priests, as tax collectors.

Yeah, it's been proposed before, but it's a lot more advanced and we don't know for certain (though I highly suspect it is the case) whether Tones alone are enough to program Invested powers into Hemalurgic spikes or Metalminds. As for using Purified Dor to directly fuel the creation of Hemalurgic spikes or Unsealed Metalminds, I think it's probably more complicated. I think you could do it, and once you did it would prove superior to most other methods of power generation, but you'd have to learn how and what to Command free-floating Investiture with. All in all, still a really good idea. I'd think the Micro-Hemalurgy would be expected to be seen in an era 3 or 4 setting (less complicated to figure out, but less powerful), with directly programmable Investiture being an era 5 deal.
-
Oh yeah, it could be pretty OP, especially considering how little Investiture is actually required to fuel Forgery in the first place. As for needing to Store them with no Compounding though, I'm not sure about that. If you manage to get a BoM style Metalmind, couldn't you just use its own powers to Compound? Thanks! That means a lot Hmm, maybe if you Stored only at like 5-15% it would be too small a disruption to prevent Storage of Forged powers? Definitely less efficient overall, but still useful. I don't know about that. Once the power is Stored, it's no longer part of the Forgery, it's now its own thing. I don't think that it would collapse due to Compounding if you can get it to that point. Thank you! Yeah, if you change your Identity when you stamp yourself to get a different power, that would really require some external Identity Blanking to work in creating Unsealed Metalminds.

Ah, yup, that's right. For some reason my brain broke for a moment and thought that Burning A-aluminum yourself would be a slower process, so having it Leeched would instead be instantaneous. No matter whether it was Leeched or you Burned it yourself, the effect would pretty much be the same. Still, I suppose Leeching them instead of them using the aluminum Allomancy directly could be useful if they were incapacitated (i.e. bullet lodged in the brain). That would probably be more efficient in most cases. I guess the only time you'd want to do it for them is if they received a brain injury and couldn't do it themselves. As @alder24 mentioned, alloys of aluminum close enough to have their metallurgic properties should be Allomantically viable, meaning if you couldn't Burn them you wouldn't need to anyway and could just heal normally. Good point on the Medallions not having Allomancy yet, I forgot about that little detail. Maybe once they crack that secret you could use them instead of Hemalurgy (BoM seem to suggest it can be done somehow). As for the difficulty of using it. . . Yeah, it's not really super practical in a lot of cases. I suppose, as @therunner mentioned, it may be more effective in most cases of aluminum being lodged inside the person in question to tough it out until your in a safer place and you could use this convoluted process instead of rummaging through their insides to remove a bullet. Still, if you're on the battlefied and your buddy drops from an aluminum bullet to the brain, this gives them a chance to survive, despite the difficulty. I also do think that once more advanced Unsealed Metalminds are developed, it very likely may be a more practical process.
-
I was thinking about ways to help Invested individuals counter some of the deadliness of aluminum weapons, especially those that could get lodged in the body and prevent them from healing. What if your ally got shot right in the head with one and the bullet got lodged inside? That would normally kill them, even of they were a gold Compounding Savant. However, if you, their ally, were to rush over and give them a Hemalurgic spike or an Unsealed granting the ability to Burn aluminum, you should be able to Leech it, I would think, as it is now a viable target for that Allomancy. Afterwards, an Unsealed Goldmind that automatically Tapped healing would bring them back. Perhaps a future technology of a more automated process could be made, where automatically functioning Metalminds could specifically target aluminum lodged in the body with A-aluminum or Leech it without removing all other Investiture. Then you could pretty much negate aluminum's counter to F-gold healing.

I've been thinking about this WoB and a few of its implications: So, instead of trying to Forge just any Scadrien into being an Allomancer or Feruchemist, perhaps you could Forge a previously existing Metalborn into another kind. Being an aluminum or duralumin gnat would actually be useful, as you could repurpose their higher level of Investiture into being whatever power you wanted. Or, you could pull an even more broken hack and Forge any Twinborn into being a combination of your choosing, like, oh, I don't know, a Compounder? Honestly, it shouldn't even be that hard based on what we know of the magic system's interactions. But wait, there's more; what if you rewrote a Twinborn with the powers of a Soulbearer Ferring so they could save their temporary Allomantic powers, you could possibly bypass any Identity interference. If you can Tap your ability to Store other powers as well, you could then save all your temporary Feruchemical powers as well, recreating the BoM.

100% agree. Wax pulled off a stunt that probably isn't even possible IRL, possibly due to his Resonance boosting that skillset.

I've come up with a couple ways in the past to make harvesting Investiture via Hemalurgy more viable, such as healing donors via F-gold or giving a spiked Metalborn their power back with that very spike. So here's another thought; what if you deliberately only take a fraction of the donor's Investiture that you could take? The Set scientists seemed to be stripping their victims of all their Innate Investiture, leaving them worse off than a Drab. This, as if it really needs saying, is pretty awful, as it permanently marrs their Spiritwebs and significantly reduces their quality of life. However, in the Sunlit Man, Nomad talks to Auxiliary he speaks about the resiliency of the soul: This line about self-repair is particularly interesting to me, as maybe it could mean that tiny, miniscule amounts of Investiture taken from a donor via Hemalurgy (maybe between 1-5% of their total Innate Investiture) could be healed naturally, as the Spiritweb is constantly changing a little bit. Now, this line is also coming from a highly Invested Dawnsliver, so it's very possible that Nomad just means you can theoretically heal Spiritweb damage through Invested means, such as his own or something like F-gold. In this case, I wonder if Micro-Hemalurgy would still potentially be useful, mostly by just skimming off such a small percentage of Investiture from each donor (after having them Blank their Identity) that it doesn't breech the threshold that would have a real impact on the donor's life. This way you'd need to spike a lot more people to fully Invest that spike, but nobody would have permanent negative impacts to their health. Less convenient, but far more ethical.

How to Compound with Hemalurgy (and become the Lord Ruler)
Trusk'our replied to NerdyAarakocra's topic in Mistborn
I don't have the book on me, but I know he and Telsin had to use weight reduction Medallions in order to fly on the airship, and I'm pretty sure he mentions using Medallions as well. Personally, I think would work as the spike has the composition for the Invested charges for two different spikes, but acts as a single spike Realmatically in terms of Identity and one-ness. This is, of course, entirely theoretical and it very well may be that it just doesn't work this way. Maybe if multiple metals cannot be combined as Hemalurgic spikes, you could use Atium, as the composition would be the same for any power and only finding Bindpoints that can hotwire multiple powers would matter. How to Compound with Hemalurgy (and become the Lord Ruler)
Trusk'our replied to NerdyAarakocra's topic in Mistborn
A fair point. Normally, I'd agree with this on other topics, such as her knowledge of Identity contamination being a key component in Hemalurgic Compounding or the reason for weakened Hemalurgy being due to Ruin's and Preservation's new balance of Intent, but this really feels more like a simple linguistic interchange, so I'm not ready to commit to it. I'm not sure that this is connected to Hemalurgic limitations. We've even seen Medallions used by Mr. Suit, who had three Hemalurgic spikes already at the time. It is true that perception cannot override everything, but in this case I mean that a single object made from multiple parts could still be counted as a single object. For example, a gun usually registers as a single object to Steelpushing, yet it has many moving parts made of different materials. Sunlit Man spoilers: Sorry, I didn't mean to correct you here, I was just trying to make my case clear for any others reading as I didn't exactly explain myself very well originally. This is true. That is why this hinges on the possibility of at least some Bindpoints that share a Hemalurgic Quadrant being interchangeable.- 9 replies

Hmm, good catch. Perhaps separated sDNA and powers aren't the full answer then. I'll have to think on this some more.

How to Compound with Hemalurgy (and become the Lord Ruler)
Trusk'our replied to NerdyAarakocra's topic in Mistborn
Krhiss is an in world arcanist limited by the knowledge available to those who are in world. I think it's quite likely that she means individual spikes rather than powers, as they are more or less analogous to one another with current in world understanding. That being said, it is still definitely a possibility that you can't get more than 3-5 powers no matter your number of spikes. It's all too theoretical at this point to say for certain. I believe a spike counting as a single object has more to do with Identity, perception, and the number of Bindpoints it requires (which as far as I know should only need to ever be one). Again, this is entirely theoretical at this point, so we'll need more information to be certain. I realize I should probably clarify what I propose here; since Hemalurgic pewter/steel and brass/bronze share Bindpoint quadrants, I think it may hypothetically be possible to create spikes with up to eight powers that fit into a single Bindpoint to grant all powers simultaneously. Cadmium/Bendalloy/gold/electrum all share a quadrant too, so you could maybe make a single spike containing 16 powers and graft it to a single Bindpoint, assuming Bindpoints for powers of the same Hemalurgic quadrant are interchangeable and if you can weld the metals together while keeping them pure and if you can bypass Identity contamination.- 9 replies

How to Compound with Hemalurgy (and become the Lord Ruler)
Trusk'our replied to NerdyAarakocra's topic in Mistborn
Yup, that's the easiest way to do it. Maybe even throw in a F-gold spike to donors so they can grow their power back after it's harvested. You probably could even fit multiple powers in fewer spikes if you bypass Identity contamination (i.e. a Steel spike could contain A-iron, steel, pewter, and tin), and if you're really good with metallurgy and the Bindpoints permit it, you may be able to make spikes out of multiple metals and fill the with eight to sixteen powers each, meaning you can become an artificial Fullborn with only three spikes.- 9 replies

Holy crap, I just realized something that may answer this question; When an Inquisitor gets powers from their spikes, those powers aren't passed down to their children despite being usable and Pre-Catacendre Hemalurgy overriding Identity contamination. However, Koloss do pass on some of the power of their spikes (despite the fact that we see in SH that their "true" Spiritweb retains no changes after death, and therefore shouldn't of itself have changes made to potential offspring) to their children. It seems to me then that @Treamayne's proposal about the sDNA that determines your Allomantic potential and your actual powers is probably accurate. Powers themselves being more removed from your core sDNA may also help explain why using power spikes doesn't warp you to the extent that using attribute spikes does.
